Abstract

Stunting prevalence in Kepahiang District is the highest compared to other districts. In Bengkulu, the incidence rate is lower than in other districts. Dietary intake is a direct factor causing stunting. This study examines the differences in macronutrient and micronutrient intake in stunted toddlers in rural and urban areas of Bengkulu Province. The study, with a cross-sectional design, was conducted from August to September 2020. A sample of 134 toddlers aged 12-24 months was selected using accidental sampling. Dietary intake data were collected using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SFFQ), and other data were collected through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with T-tests and Mann-Whitney tests. Macronutrient intake in stunted toddlers in rural areas was lower than in urban areas. Micronutrient intake in rural areas was also lower than in urban areas, except for vitamin A. Statistically, there were no differences in macronutrient (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrient (vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc) intake between rural and urban toddler in relation to stunting (p > 0.05). Based on the data obtained, the overall nutrient intake provided to the toddlers has not met the toddlers' nutritional needs. Regular counselling sessions from house to house for mothers with stunted toddlers are necessary. This would enable mothers to understand better their toddlers' dietary needs and how to monitor their growth.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a significant threat to society and even results in death. The content of soybeans that can lower blood glucose levels are protein, isoflavones, fiber, and a low glycemic index. Moringa leaves contain antioxidants such as flavonoids, vitamin A, E, C, and selenium, which help lower blood glucose levels. However, it is unknown whether combining soy milk with boiled moringa leaves is also beneficial in reducing blood sugar levels. This study aimed to determine how combining soy milk and boiled moringa leaves affects blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Posbindu Puskesmas Nusa Indah. Bengkulu city in 2023. The design used in this study is a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test design. Fifteen pre-elderly samples aged 45 to 59 years with blood sugar levels of 140 to 199 mg/dL were randomly selected as intervention targets in this study. The treatment combined 200 ml of soy milk with 150 mL of Moringa leaf decoction, and then 350 mL of soymilk was produced. The intervention was given twice daily, as much as 175 mL for seven days. Data analysis using the Paired T-test showed that there was a significant relationship between intervention and the sugar level of type 2 diabetes mellitus (p < 0.001). There was a substantial decrease in blood glucose levels after administering the soymilk intervention with Moringa leaf decoction after seven days of intervention with p < 0.001. This combination product can be used as a functional food ingredient as an alternative for lowering blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Iron nutrient anemia in adolescents can harm health. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between menstrual periods and iron consumption with hemoglobin levels in young women at SMP Negeri 19 Kota Bengkulu. This study uses a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique was a purposive sampling of 44 young women. Primary data collection is obtained by measuring the hemoglobin values taken using the Easy Touch GCHb tool, menstrual time taken by questionnaire, and knowing daily iron consumption by direct interview using the Semi-FFQ form, while secondary data is obtained by name, class, age, and the total number of young women in SMP Negeri 19 Kota Bengkulu. The test used in this study is the Pearson correlation test. The results showed that the average menstrual period was 7.7 days, the average yield of iron consumption was 8.14mg/day, and the average yield on hemoglobin levels was 11.70g/dl. The test results of the relationship between menstrual periods and hemoglobin levels obtained p value=0.005 with r=-0.417 shows that the strength of a moderate and negative pattern of relationship means that the greater the duration of menstruation, the smaller the hemoglobin level, and there is a relationship between iron consumption and hemoglobin levels obtained p-value=0,000 with r=0.665 shows that the strength of a strong relationship and positive pattern means that the greater the consumption of iron, the greater the hemoglobin level. There is a relationship between the duration of menstruation and hemoglobin levels, iron consumption, and hemoglobin levels.

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with Bengkulu City reporting a prevalence of 12.9% in 2022. Consumption of macro and micronutrients is a factor directly related to toddlers' nutritional status. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the differences in macro and micronutrient consumption among stunted toddlers in Bengkulu City. Methods: A mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed, involving 50 stunted toddlers and their mothers. Quantitative data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), while qualitative data were obtained through interviews with six mothers. Results: The results showed no significant differences in the consumption of energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, and zinc between toddlers with severe stunting and stunting. However, a significant difference was found in iron consumption (p=0.048), with severely stunted toddlers consuming less iron compared to stunted toddlers. Interviews revealed similar dietary patterns among mothers of both groups, with rice as the staple food and limited fish consumption.  Conclusion: The findings suggest monitoring iron-rich food consumption in stunted children is essential. Strengthening family empowerment programs, expanding educational initiatives on iron consumption, and regular nutritional monitoring are recommended to address stunting. Promotion of affordable, iron-rich foods and monitoring of iron intake by mothers and health workers are crucial in the treatment of stunting.

Abstract

Background: Poor maternal health knowledge indirectly affects pregnancy outcomes. According to previous research, as many as 65% of mothers with poor or below average understanding give birth to children with low birth weight (LBW). Maternal and infant health information is needed. Objectives: To determine the effect of increased maternal knowledge on pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This study used a non-randomized quasi-experimental methodology. The study was conducted in Bengkulu City from August 2023 to January 2024. This study involved pregnant women who lived in the working area of Bengkulu City health centers (five health centers). This study examined education, knowledge, and pregnancy outcomes. Validity and reliability were verified using a questionnaire (0.969 Cronbach's Alpha). Pre- and post-tests were conducted before and one month after school. The dependent t-test assessed the impact of the intervention and the correlation test assessed pregnancy outcomes. Results: The average maternal knowledge before and after the intervention was 16.58 and 18.08. Pregnant women's understanding changed after the intervention (p-value=0.000). Increased maternal knowledge did not affect pregnancy outcomes (p-value=0.301). Conclusions: There was an increase knowledge of pregnant women after education provision, but this did not have an impact on pregnancy outcomes. Education about pregnancy nutrition is very necessary so that mothers have good knowledge and maintain their intake.
