Abstract

The water-based settlement of Cambayya, Makassar, represents a spatial adaptation by coastal communities facing urbanization, land scarcity, and dynamic marine conditions. High population density has driven the organic growth of informal stilt housing over coastal waters. This study examines spatial adaptation strategies that foster socio-ecological resilience in densely populated coastal environments. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach within a constructivist paradigm, the research combines spatial analysis, participatory observation, field surveys, interviews, and socio-ecological data interpretation. The findings reveal key adaptive responses, including the conversion of underfloor stilt areas into domestic space, the use of hybrid timber-concrete structures, and horizontal expansion into shallow waters. While adaptive, these practices exacerbate ecological degradation, such as tidal flooding, pollution, and inadequate sanitation. The study highlights the need for inclusive, sustainable spatial planning and proposes an innovative strategy: integrating stilt housing with waterfront development and cultural seascape tourism. This approach not only enhances resilience but also unlocks economic potential—estimated at over IDR 3.5 billion annually—through heritage-based ecotourism and creative industries. The study contributes a context-sensitive, community-driven spatial model for resilient coastal urbanism, positioning Cambayya as a reference for sustainable development in similar tropical coastal settlements.

Abstract

Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide have been widely studied as a biomass-sourced alternative to graphene for their various capabilities, e.g. as adsorbent. This publication reports the preparation of graphite (g), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) from coconut shell (1) and sugarcane bagasse (2) using matoa leaves extract as reducing agent, characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The X-ray diffractogram showed 2θ peaks between 22.8°–23.8° for g1, GO1, and rGO1, and between 23.6°–25.8° for g2, GO2, and rGO2. FT-IR spectra of both sets of GO and rGO showed common peaks of O–H (~3400 cm–1), C–H (~2900 cm–1), and C–OH (~1600 cm–1), while also some noticeable differences between the sets. Raman spectra of both rGO showed D peak (~1400 cm–1), G peak (~1700 cm–1), and weak 2D peaks (2700–3300 cm–1) with ID/IG of 0.93 and 0.91 for rGO1 and rGO2, respectively. The obtained g, GO, and rGO were used as adsorbent for methylene blue dye. The adsorption study involved variation in dye concentration, contact time, and amount of adsorbent. It was found that rGO performs best as adsorbent compared to GO and g, with maximum adsorption capacity of 22.308 μg/mg (rGO1) and 47.533 μg/mg (rGO2). Adsorbents prepared from sugarcane bagasse were found to perform better due to its easiness of carbonization compared to coconut shell.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic and political discourse of Kadjawen, a Javanese-language magazine published by Balai Pustaka during the Dutch colonial period, with a focus on the years 1927–1931. Using digital text analysis methods, specifically concordance and frequency analysis, the study explores the appearance and interaction of the keywords 'Walandi' (Dutch) and 'Pakêmpalan' (meaning 'association' or 'organisation') in the corpus. Data were taken from the digital edition of Kadjawen available at sastra.org and 201 texts were processed into plain text and analysed using Python and Voyant Tools. The frequency and contextual proximity of these two terms were examined to identify patterns reflecting the magazine's stance amid the rise of the Indonesian national movement and the discourse surrounding the Second Youth Congress (1928). The results show that, despite operating under colonial supervision, Kadjawen's language use reveals a nuanced representation of colonial and indigenous organisations, highlighting the complex negotiations between Javanese identity and Dutch authority. By combining computational analysis with careful reading, this study sheds light on how colonial-era vernacular media shaped Javanese political consciousness and modern discourse.
