Abstract

Conceptual understanding is a basic skill that students need to have in learning. This has encouraged many researchers to implement strategies in learning to improve students' understanding of kinematics material. This article conducts a comprehensive review of 22 Scopus indexed journals to answer research questions related to What strategies are used in learning kinematics material and what difficulties do students experience during learning? The method is carried out using the PRISMA stages which consist of four journal mapping processes, namely identification, screening, eligibility, and included in this review. The review results indicate that from 2016 to 2024, various strategies and comparative studies have been implemented in kinematics learning. Most of these strategies effectively enhance students' conceptual understanding. However, there are still some difficulties for students in understanding the concept of kinematics which are still underlined, especially in understanding the interpretation of x-t, v-t, and a-t graphs.

Abstract

Representational competence is vital for learning and solving problems in physics, yet many students struggle to master it, and teachers encounter challenges in fostering its development. This study addresses the issue by developing an Android-based training model focused on linear motion kinematics, designed using the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) research and development (RD) framework and validated by experts. A total of 127 undergraduates participated through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The model incorporates feedback and scaffolding to guide students’ understanding and practice. Implementation results showed significant improvements in representational competence. N-Gain scores reached 0.35 (medium) in experimental group I and 0.61 (medium) in experimental group II. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed these gains were significant (p0.05) with large effect sizes (r=0.871; r=0.862). Further, the Kruskal-Wallis’s test revealed significant differences between groups, and Games-Howell post hoc analysis indicated that integrated classroom use was more effective than independent practice. Student responses demonstrated high practicality and positive engagement, reinforcing the model’s usability. These findings highlight the novelty of an expert-validated, scalable Android-based platform as an accessible tool to enhance representational competence in physics education. Future research should investigate its broader application across physics topics and its long-term impact on learning outcomes.

Abstract

One of the primary goals of physics education is to achieve a solid conceptual understanding among learners. This conceptual understanding, which enables students to address the challenges they encounter effectively, is conceptual mastery. A higher level of conceptual mastery correlates with an increased capacity for students to tackle everyday problems successfully. This study aims to identify the improvement of students' conceptual mastery through a multi-representation-based recitation program accompanied by feedback and reinforcement questions. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative, carried out on 36 students of the Physics Undergraduate Study Program. The recitation program is multi-representational and multi-context-based, which contains reinforcement questions and feedback used by students outside of lecture hours to help master the concepts obtained in class. The results showed the mastery of concepts of momentum and impulse students increased, indicated by the transition of student's answers and the average of students from 30.8 to 52.8. The increase in students' mastery of concepts is shown in questions in the context of determining impulses in related problems and the conservation of momentum in related problems. The multi-representation and multi-context presented in the recitation program and pretest and posttest questions affect students' mastery of concepts in solving problems.

Abstract

Static fluids are a difficult topic, and students must understand many of the concepts involved. Students often misunderstand buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and Pascal's law. A learning method that uses the 5E learning cycle model can help overcome these misunderstandings. This method trains students to create and use models, analyze data, think mathematically, design experiments, and provide scientific explanations. Through these learning experiences, students should gain a deep understanding of the main ideas of static fluids. This study aimed to enhance students' conceptual understanding of static fluids using the 5E learning cycle model. The research design was a one-group pretest-posttest study with 29 high school students from Brawijaya Smart School in Malang as the subjects. Conceptual understanding was measured using a test comprising 10 multiple-choice questions. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test to calculate the n-gain value. The analysis revealed a significant improvement in students' conceptual understanding of static fluids after implementing the 5E learning cycle model. The research yielded an n-gain value of 0.55, which falls within the moderate category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 5E learning cycle model improves students' conceptual understanding of static fluid material.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify and analyze students’ misconceptions regarding momentum and impulse through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), focusing on patterns of misconceptions, difficulties in conceptual understanding, and effective instructional interventions reported in previous studies. Methodology: This study employed a PRISMA-based Systematic Literature Review design. Articles were collected from Scopus-indexed journals, SINTA-accredited journals, ERIC, Taylor & Francis, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar published between 2018 and 2025. The article selection process used purposive sampling based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. From 1,032 identified articles, 8 eligible studies were selected for analysis. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using thematic analysis and narrative synthesis. Main Findings: The findings indicate that students’ conceptual understanding of momentum and impulse remains low, while misconceptions persist in force–time–impulse relationships, graphical interpretation, momentum conservation, and momentum–energy integration. Most misconceptions originate from an incomplete understanding of Newtonian mechanics and fragmented conceptual structures. Several instructional approaches, including multiple representations, knowledge integration, cognitive conflict, conceptual change text, and demonstration-based learning, were found effective in reducing misconceptions and improving conceptual understanding. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a focused synthesis of misconception patterns specifically in momentum and impulse topics and emphasizes the importance of conceptual integration-based instruction in reducing persistent misconceptions in physics learning.
