Abstract

The surface of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) restoration changes because of mastication forces, shear force, other functional forces, and also tooth brushing process. Things that can also change the surface of GIC restoration is kind of food and beverage consumption, such as in Indonesia, lime and lemon juice are usual beverage, and mixed in food. The purpose of this study is to determine the changes in surface roughness of GIC restoration due to lime and lemon juice immersion. Three groups GIC sample, each of ten samples were 5 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm in height. Group 1 was immersed in mineral water (as control) for 10 days. In 10 days, Group 2 was immersed in lime juice, each day 9 times @ 15 minutes and brushed with soft toothbrush for 9 times @ 3 minutes. Similar way with group 2, 10 samples of group 3 was immersed in lemon juice. Samples immersed in mineral water show changes in surface roughness of 0.977+0.503 μm, while samples immersed in lime juice show 4.267+1.489 μm, and samples immersed in lemon juice show 4.293+1.311 μm. One way ANOVA test shows significant differences among the samples (p<0.05). Post hoc Tukey test shows significant difference (p<0.05) between group 1 and group 2 and between group 1 and group 3. However, there is no significant difference between group 2 and group 3 (p>0.05). Conclusion, lime juice and lemon juice cause changes in the surface roughness of GIC more than mineral water.

Abstract

Impression stage is an important step in dentistry. The impression itself can be a media of infection transmisions due to microorganisms in the oral cavity. Therefore it is necessary to disinfect the impression before casting process. Dimensional stability is a factor that can affect accuracy of gypsum casts, meanwhile the elastomeric impression materials are not usually casted immediatelly. To determine effect of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine gluconate disinfectans with various casting time, on the dimensional stability of condensation silicone gypsum casts. A total of 30 samples were made using condensation silicone impression materials. The impressions were disinfected in 5,25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate (Chx). The impression was casted in various time intervals 0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours with type III gypsum product. Dimensional changes were measured and the data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 17 with two-way ANOVA, post hoc LSD and unpaired t-test. Sodium hypochlorite caused greater dimensional changes (0,49%) than chlorhexidine gluconate (0,44%). Significant dimensional changes were detected after the casting was delayed for more than 24 hours (p <0.05). Sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine gluconate do not cause dimensional changes, assuming that condensation silicone impression is casted in maximum time of 24 hours. Disinfection of condensation silicone impression material in chlorhexidine gluconate presents better dimensional stability than sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract

Tooth hypersensitivity is a clinical condition that describes localized, non spontaneous pain, and arises when tooth is stimulated using thermal, chemical, and mechanical stimuli. The use of desensitizing agent such as hydroxyapatite and Eugenia caryophyllus can be used as home treatment that can relieve tooth hypersensitivity. Hydroxyapatite is an inorganic compound that makes up the hard tissues of the human body such as bone, dentine and tooth. Hydroxyapatite has a mechanism to decrease dental hypersensitivity by inducing remineralization of the teeth and close the open dentinal tubules. Eugenia caryophyllus is a material that is used in the field of dentistry and can reduce the pain of tooth hypersensitivity by suppressing nerve receptors in the perception of pain felt by the patient. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of hydroxyapatite-based toothpaste and Eugenia caryophyllus against tooth hypersensitivity. In this observational research, researcher give different type of toothpaste to two groups of research subjects and measure the changes in tooth sensitivity for 15 days. The value of tooth hypersensitivity before and after treatment is tested using Electric Pulp Test (EPT). Independent t-test shows the result of p value = 1.30 (p>0.05). It can be concluded that there is no significant difference between hydroxyapatite and Eugenia caryophyllus in relieving tooth hypersensitivity after being used for 15 days.

Abstract

Resin modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC) is a restorative dental material developed in 1967. The surface roughness of this restorative materials cause plaque accumulation which lead to quality degradation and brittleness of restoration. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of infused water immersion with brushing against the surface roughness changes of RMGIC. Forty samples (6mm diameter, 4mm thickness) were divided into 4 groups: group A light-cured RMGIC and group B self-cured RMGIC were soaked in 100mL of mineral water for 15 days, group C light-cured RMGIC and group D self-cured RMGIC were soaked in 100Ml infused water for 5 minutes and replaced by mineral water for 5 minutes repeated 20 times each day in 15 days. The samples were brushed for 2 minutes before and after immersion. Samples roughness were tested before and after treatment using a surface roughness tester. The surface roughness of group A was 1,28±0,49µm (before) 3.24±1.18µm (after), group B 0.52±0.23µm (before) 2.76±0.55µm (after), group C 1.87±0.45µm (before) 4.26±2.36µm (after), and group D 0.88±0.53µm (before) 4.01±1.09µm (after). Statistical analytics using t-test showed a significant difference in surface roughness value between before and after treatment, but no significant difference in the increase value of roughness after soaked in infused water between self-curing and light-curing RMGIC.

Abstract

One of the restorative dental materials that is continuously developed is Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC). The aim of this research is to know whether there is influence of nanofilled resin coating application on GIC to reduce surface roughness. In this study GIC type II (EQUIA Forte, GC, Japan) was used to be mechanically manipulated and inserted into a mold which produced a sample of 6.0±0.3 mm in diameter and 3.0±0.2 mm in height. GIC samples were divided into 2 groups namely 10 GIC samples were not coated with nanofilled resin coating as control group and 10 GIC samples were coated with nanofilled resin coating as treatment group. GIC samples were tested immediately and then immersed in sterile distilled water in a 37°C incubator. After 24 hours, GIC samples were surface roughness tested using a Surface Roughness Tester. Then all samples were brushed using a soft bristle mechanical tooth brush for 1 hour. After brushing, the sample is tested for final surface roughness. The results showed an increase in surface roughness in non-coated group/control (0.005 ± 0,328mm) and coated group (0.015±0.240 mm). Statistical data analysis using unpaired t test showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the increasing of surface roughness between control group and treatment group. It can be concluded that application of nanofilled resin coating to GIC cannot reduce the roughness of GIC surface.
