Abstract

Background: Composite resin is a filling material that is similar in color to tooth enamel and can be used widely for various cases, especially for the restoration of anterior teeth. Composite resins have been modified and improved to obtain maximum restoration results, one of which is nanofiller. Nanofiller composite is known to have a high level of smoothness, but polishing remains the key to success in the final filling process. There are many types of polishing on the market, this indicates that not all dentists use the same type of tools. This study aimed to determine the effect of various types of polishing bur on the surface roughness of nanofiller.Method: The type of research conducted was an experimental laboratory. Cylindrical samples with a total of 40 samples measuring 10 mm x 2 mm were divided into 4 groups. Samples were soaked in distilled water and stored in an incubator for 24 hours at 37oC. The samples were polished using different types of bur except for the control group. Samples were tested for surface roughness using a surface roughness tester and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Result: This study shows differences in the surface roughness of the nanofiller composite after being polished using different types of polishing burs. The results of the one-way ANOVA test indicated that there was a significant difference from the average of the four sample groups. Conclusion: Polishing burs can produce different surface roughness of nanofiller composite.

Abstract

Nanohybrid composite resin is well-known because of its good aesthetic properties. It has high water sorption, allowing various coloring substances such as papaya juice to penetrate. Papaya juice enzymes may also cause a rougher composite resin surface. This study determined the effect of papaya juice on color and surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin using laboratory experiment. This study used posttest with control group design containing 27 samples of nanohybrid composite resin (B & E Korea XS-FIL A3.5) with diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 2 mm. The samples were divided into 3 groups: immediate, control, and treatment group. The samples of immediate group were tested directly for color and surface roughness. The treatment group was immersed in papaya juice for 3 hours followed by 21 hours in distilled water, while the control group was immersed in distilled water for 24 hours. All samples were immersed in an incubator at 37 °C for 4 days. Changes in color and surface roughness were tested using a VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer and a Taylor Hobson surface roughness tester, respectively. ANOVA and post hoc Tukey showed a significant (p < 0.05) change in color (p = 0.003) and surface roughness (p = 0.000); significant (p = 0.033) color change was obtained between the immediate group (E = 6.933) and the treatment group (E = 7.959). In terms of surface roughness, significant (p = 0.000) results were obtained between the treatment group (Ra = 1.974 μm) with the immediate group (Ra = 1.411 μm) and the control group (Ra = 1.404 μm). In conclusion, papaya juice causes changes in color and surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin.

Abstract

Abstract

Tooth loss can lead to physical and psychological problems such as impaired chewing, digestive disorders, changes in facial structure, speech difficulties, and reduced self-confidence, which may trigger anxiety and depression. The 2023 Indonesian Health Survey reported that although 31.9% of people had experienced tooth extraction, only 3.1% had their teeth replaced, showing a significant treatment gap. Dental implants have emerged as the gold standard for tooth replacement due to their superior function, stability, and aesthetic outcome compared to conventional dentures. This case report discusses a 63-year-old female patient who presented with chewing difficulties and esthetic concerns due to the loss of mandibular teeth numbers 45 and 46. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed adequate alveolar bone volume, a healthy periodontal condition, and no systemic contraindications despite a history of anti-cancer drug use more than 15 years prior. Two implants, with a diameter of 4.6 mm and a length of 10.5 mm, were placed in the mandibular premolar and molar regions, followed by the placement of healing abutments and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns after osseointegration. Postoperative evaluations revealed excellent implant stability, improved masticatory function, and high aesthetic satisfaction, with a significant positive psychological impact. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of dental implants as a reliable rehabilitation option that enhances oral health and improves quality of life. had them replacedprovide a functional, stable, and aesthetically pleasing DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v5n2/163-176

Abstract

Introduction: Giomer is a resin-based restorative material consisting of prereacted glass ionomer (PRG) filler which can release fluoride. Carbonated beverages, popular beverages which contain acids that rich in H+ ions, can diffuse into the resin-based restoration and cause high solubility. Objective: To analyze the effect of immersion in carbonated drinks on water absorption and diametral tensile strength of giomer. Methods: Giomer was packed into a stainless-steel mold to obtain sample with diameter of 6.0±0.03mm and height of 3.0±0.09mm. The samples were divided into 2 groups for water absorption test and 3 groups for diametrical tensile strength test. Ten samples of giomer were soaked in artificial saliva for 4 days as a control group, 10 giomer samples were immersed in carbonated drinks for 6 hours, then replaced with artificial saliva for 18 hours and repeated for 4 days as a treatment group, and 10 samples of giomer were used as immediate group for direct diametral tensile strength test. Samples were incubated at 37°C. Results: Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in giomer absorption between the control group (0.99±0.54%) and the treatment group (2.37±2.62%). One Way ANOVA test showed significant difference (p<0.05) in giomer diametral tensile strength among the immediate group (29.6±3.7MPa), the control group (51.1±3.9MPa) and the treatment group (44.8±5.3MPa). Conclusion: Immersion in carbonated beverages did not show significant difference with artificial saliva for the water absorption ability of giomer. However, the diametral tensile strength of giomer decreased after immersion in carbonated beverages for 24 hours.

Abstract

Introduction: Nanofilled composite resins have small filler particles size (1-100 nm). Its mechanical properties consist of hardness, surface roughness, and water absorption. Composite resins easily degraded by acid pH because it contains polymer with unstable bonds. Degradation can cause water absorption. It can be scratched more easily if they have low hardness. Rough surfaces can cause the risk of plaque formation, secondary caries, discoloration, damage to the surface of the patch, reduces resistance, accelerates abrasion, and can cause irritation to the surrounding soft tissue. Objective: To analyze the effect of mechanical properties (water absorption, hardness, and surface roughness) on nanofilled composite resins after strawberry juice (Fragaria ananassa) immersion. Methods: This research was a laboratory experimental with post-test and control group design. Forty cylindrical samples of nanofilled composite resins Filtek Z350XT (3M ESPE) (10mm x 2 mm) were divided into four groups: water absorption group, hardness tested group, surface roughness tested group, and control group. Surface roughness tested group and hardness tested group were immersed in strawberry juice each 10 mL for 2 hours a day and repeated for 12 days. After 10 and 12 days of immersion, hardness tested group, surface roughness tested group, and control group will be measured using surface roughness test and hardness test. Water absorption test will be carried out before immersion and after 10 and 12 days of immersion. Results: One Way ANOVA statistical test on surface roughness test showed a p-value of 0.001 (p<0.05) and the water absorption test show a p-value of 0.983 (p>0.05). Post Hoc Tukey test had significant difference of roughness tested on day 12 and control group with a p-value of 0.01 (p<0.05). Conclusions: Strawberry juice increases surface roughness of nanofilled composite resins after 2 hours immersion for 12 days in comparison with control group.
