Abstract

The β-TCP material is a material of ceramic that often used in the medical and dental fields as a bone substitute material because it has biocompatible, bioresorbable and osteoconductive properties. Apart from that, this material is also biocompatible with tooth tissue, is non-inflammatory, and can regenerate dentin. Several studies have shown that the properties of β-TCP material can be a candidate for pulp capping material. These studies have also been carried out on experimental animals and showed good results. This article reviews the potential of β-TCP as a candidate pulp capping material in dentistry.

Abstract

Background: Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is widely used in bone grafting due to its biocompatibility and bioresorbability. Recently, there has been growing interest in using sustainable materials, such as green mussel shells, as an alternative source for β-TCP. These shells, rich in calcium carbonate, provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for β-TCP synthesis. Purpose: To fabricate composite blocks from β-TCP derived from green mussel shells, mixed with polyacrylic acid (PAA), using a setting reaction and freeze-drying method. Methods: Beta-tricalcium phosphate powder was obtained via wet precipitation, starting with calcium carbonate from green mussel shells, converting it to calcium oxide, and then to β-TCP. The resulting powder was mixed with PAA, set, and freeze-dried to form composite blocks. Results: Characterization of the composite blocks for porosity and diametral tensile strength (DTS) showed that blocks made with green mussel shell-derived β-TCP had rougher surfaces due to larger particles than control blocks made with commercial β-TCP. Composite blocks with 70% green mussel shell-derived β-TCP and 30% PAA exhibited significantly higher porosity (26.97% ± 2.64%) and DTS (11.76 ± 1.59 MPa) than those made with commercial β-TCP (porosity: 13.40% ± 1.56%; DTS: 7.79 ± 1.29 MPa). Reducing β-TCP content to 60% resulted in increased porosity (34.22% ± 1.84%) and lower DTS (6.41 ± 0.78 MPa). Conclusion: Composite blocks made from green mussel shell-derived β-TCP and PAA showed higher porosity and significantly higher DTS than blocks made from commercial β-TCP. Decreasing β-TCP content increased porosity but decreased DTS.

Abstract

Perkembangan penelitian teknologi nano membuat penggunaan cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC) menjadi alternatif menarik dalam meningkatkan sifat mekanis glass ionomer cement (GIC). Ampas tebu (Saccharum officinarum L.) merupakan sumber CNC, dengan selulosa nanokristal berkristalinitas tinggi (72,5%). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan CNC serat ampas tebu pada sifat mekanis GIC. Sampel GIC (GC Fuji IX) untuk pengujian dibagi dalam 2 kelompok yaitu kontrol dan penambahan 0,2% CNC ampas tebu. Setelah disimpan di dalam aqua distilata dalam inkubator 370C selama 24 jam, sampel dikarakterisasi dengan scanning electron microscope (SEM). Penambahan CNC serat ampas tebu sebanyak 0,2% menunjukkan hasil SEM dengan morfologi permukaan yang lebih padat dan tidak berporus. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penambahan ampas tebu dengan konsentrasi 0,2% dapat menunjukan morfologi permukaan yang tidak berporus.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of the position of the impacted mandibular third molar roots in relation to the mandibular canal using a classification by Rood and Shehab. Materials and Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. The samples were 210 left and right third molar impaction tooth mandibular on 105 digital panoramic radiographs at the Radiology Installation, RSGM FKG Usakti, and categorized according to the seven classifications by Rood and Shehab. The interobserver reliability test was conducted using Cohen's Kappa test. The data is presented as frequency and percentages for each type of root position classification. Results: Radiolucent tooth type on the root was the most prevalent at 104 (50%), white line interruption in 28 (13%), narrowing of the mandibular canal in 27 (13%), deflection of the tooth root in 26 (12%), deflection of mandibular canal in 11 (5%), narrowing of the root in 8 (4%), and bifid apex in 6 (3%). Conclusion: The highest prevalence of third molar impaction tooth root position was the radiolucent type at the root, and the lowest was the bifid apex type.
