Abstract

Abstract

Laterite soil is one of natural resources in East Kotawaringin regency, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, which contains high element of Fe. Fe is one of micronutrients that is needed for plant in slight amount. This study aims to determine the effect of chitosan composition and composition of zeolite : laterite on the release of Fe activities from synthesized fertilizers result. Laterite is characterized by using XRF and XRD. Slow release iron fertilizer is synthesized by eliciting laterite to zeolite matrix. Then, It is stirred into chitosan gel with concentration of 2, 2.6, and 2.8 % for 30 minutes. After Zeolite - laterite - chitosan has been homogenized, then it is dropped into 0.4 M NaOH to form beads. Then testing the release of Fe with the batch method in distilled water. The result showed that the laterite soil is amorphous form, and Fe content reached 80.25 % . The higher the concentration of chitosan which is used , then more Fe is released from fertilizer. Whereas if the amount of zeolite is greater, the slower the release of Fe will be.

Abstract

Phenol which contained in waste water has to be reduced and it could be done by oxygen oxidation.  In order to increase the rate of reaction it was needed a catalyst. In this research the capability of various catalysts, namely zeolite-Zn(II), zeolite-Cu(II) and zeolite-Co(II)in oxidation of phenol has been investigated. The aim of this research was to study the type of metal ion catalyst towards the percentage of oxidated phenol. The oxidation process were carried out in an aqueous phenol of 100 ppm with oxygen flow rate of 200 mL/min. in the presence of catalysts with 0.2M of initial impregnation concentration. The capabilities of catalysts were performed by calculating the activation energy and it was done at two different temperatures, i.e. 70 and 90 oC. The percentage of oxidated phenol was determinated by measuring its concentration using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. In addition, the impregnated metal was calculated by measuring the ion concentration remains in the filtrate solution and it was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that metal ion types affected the catalytic activity. The order of phenol oxidationactivity decreased as Co(II) > Cu(II) > Zn(II). The surface characteristics of catalysts were supported by pore volume and pore diameter i.e 0.009 cm3/g and 16.59 Å for Zn(II) whereas specific surface area was 10.32 m2/g for Zn(II), 0.004 cm3/g and 24.37 Å for Cu(II) whereas specific surface area was 3.57 m2/g for Cu(II), 0.001 cm3/g and 19.63 Å for Co(II) whereas specific surface area was 10.26m2/g for Co(II).

Abstract

The effect of CO2 flow rate and carbonation temperature were studied in the synthesis of PCC from limestone using carbonation method. The synthesis was started by dissolving CaO that was obtained from calcination of limestone into HNO3 6M. The solution was then added with ammonia solution and then streamed with CO2 until pH 8 with flow rates of 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; and 2.0 L/min. The optimum flow rate obtained from this stage was then applied in the carbonation process with temperatures of 50, 80, 100, 150, 200, and 250 °C. The results showed that low flow rate give reasonably high yield but the yields obtained in every flow rate used in this work has insignificant difference based on F-test. The optimum flow rate used for the synthesis of PCC in the next stage was 0.5 L/min with a yield of 62.95%. Different carbonation temperature influences the polymorphs and crystallinity of the synthesized PCC. The synthesized PCC was analyzed by FT-IT, powder-XRD, SEM-EDX, and PSA. FT-IR analysis showed stretching vibrations of C–O at 1419, 1479, and 1384 cm-1 which correspond to calcite, vaterite, and aragonite respectively. Powder-XRD and SEM-EDX confirms that at the carbonation temperature of 50 °C, calcite and vaterite were formed, while at the carbonation temperature of 80 °C, mixture of calcite-vaterite-aragonite were obtained. Higher carbonation temperature changes the vaterite and aragonite polymorphs into calcite, and the best crystallinity was obtained at 250 °C. PSA analysis showed that the particle diameter of the synthesized PCC was about 3.58 to 38.14 µm.

Abstract

Fe3O4 is a photocatalyst that is used to degrade textile dye waste which can be collected and reused. Fe3O4 was prepared by coprecipitation method, then impregnated with SiO2 and sodium alginate. The purposes of this study were to investigate the degradation of textile dye waste using a Fe3O4-SiO2-alginate photocatalyst, to examine the light and dark test of photocatalyst under the influence of concentration and irradiation time. The type of light used was a 14.5-watt Philips LED lamp with a wavelength of 400-640 nm. Photocatalyst characterizations were conducted using FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, and XRD. The light and dark test of photocatalyst was carried out by photodegradation of textile dye waste with 0.5 g of photocatalyst with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% and irradiation times were varied for 60, 90, 120 min. The degradation results were measured by calculating the COD value. The results of characterization by FTIR showed that the photocatalyst Fe3O4-SiO2-Alginate had absorption at wavelengths of 637.56 cm−1 and 3365.86 cm−1 which indicated the Fe-O-Si functional group and O-H stretching vibration. Results of UV-Vis DRS were analyzed using Origin Pro 2022 and revealed that the band energy gap for Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-SiO2 were 2.20 eV and 1.77 eV, respectively. The XRD results analysis with Match!3 software showed that for Fe3O4 had magnetite phases, while SiO2 had amorphous cristobalite phases. The 15% (w/v) Fe3O4 concentration in the form of powder and granules degraded batik liquid waste by 79.6% and 84.48%, respectively.
