Abstract

This study aimed to improve student learning outcomes in the Science, Environment, and Social Studies subject through the use of instructional videos supported by elements of the surrounding natural environment in Grade V of SD Inpres 5 Taipalaga. The research employed a quantitative approach using classroom action research, conducted in two cycles consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The sample and population consisted of 16 students. Data were collected through essay-type achievement tests and observational instruments. The results from Cycle I showed that 11 out of 16 students achieved the minimum mastery criteria, resulting in a classical completeness rate of 68.75%. In Cycle II, 12 students met the learning objectives, increasing classical completeness to 75%, an improvement of 6.25% over Cycle I. Student activity observations also improved from 72.91% in Cycle I to 89.58% in Cycle II. Likewise, teacher performance increased from 85.71% to 96.42% across the two cycles. These findings demonstrate that integrating instructional videos with local environmental contexts can enhance student engagement and understanding of science concepts. Therefore, the use of environmentally assisted video learning is an effective strategy to improve learning outcomes in IPAS for elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between learning motivation and the learning outcomes of third-grade students in the Science subject at SDN Inpres 1 Birobuli. The research employed a descriptive method with a quantitative approach, involving total sampling of all 26 third-grade students. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The descriptive analysis showed that 58% of students strongly agreed with the learning motivation statements, while 42% agreed. However, the findings indicated that learning motivation levels did not consistently correspond with students' academic performance. Some students with high motivation achieved moderate learning outcomes, while others with moderate motivation attained high academic results. Inferential analysis revealed that the calculated correlation coefficient (r = 0.072) was lower than the critical value in the r-table, leading to the acceptance of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the rejection of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). It can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between learning motivation and the learning outcomes of third-grade students in the Science subject at SDN Inpres 1 Birobuli. This suggests that learning motivation alone does not directly influence academic performance in this study context.

Abstract

Reading proficiency represents a fundamental cornerstone of academic success, particularly in Indonesian education where PISA assessments reveal significant literacy challenges. This study examined the influence of reading interest on Indonesian language learning achievement among elementary students, addressing gaps in understanding motivational factors within resource-constrained educational contexts. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 20 fourth-grade students at SD Inpres 2 Tondo during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through a validated 20-item reading interest questionnaire (KR-20 reliability ≥ 0.70), systematic classroom observations, and official report card documentation. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between reading interest and academic achievement. Students demonstrated moderate reading interest levels (M = 15.2, SD = 2.85) and good academic performance (M = 82.4, SD = 5.6). The analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between reading interest and Indonesian language achievement (r = 0.625, p < 0.05), indicating a moderate to strong relationship. Approximately 39% of the variance in academic achievement was attributable to reading interest levels. School environmental support was consistently high (95% positive responses), while home support remained limited (50-55% positive responses). The findings support theoretical frameworks linking reading motivation to academic outcomes and align with previous Indonesian studies. Results suggest that targeted interventions enhancing reading interest could significantly improve Indonesian language learning achievement, particularly relevant given Indonesia's declining PISA performance and ongoing literacy challenges.

Abstract

Traditional lecture-based instruction in Indonesian elementary Social Studies education often results in passive student participation and suboptimal learning outcomes. This study examined the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as an alternative pedagogical approach to enhance student engagement and academic achievement in fourth-grade Social Studies instruction. A quasi-experimental study with nonequivalent control group design was conducted at SD Negeri 9 Palu, involving 26 fourth-grade students randomly assigned to experimental (n=13) and control (n=13) groups. The experimental group received eight weeks of PjBL instruction focusing on human body organ systems through collaborative investigations, while the control group received conventional lecture-based teaching. Data were collected using a validated 20-item multiple-choice achievement test administered as pretest and posttest. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, assumption testing, independent samples t-tests, and paired samples t-tests with significance set at α = 0.05. The experimental group achieved significantly higher posttest scores (M = 88.07, SD = 6.62) compared to the control group (M = 80.38, SD = 9.23), with a statistically significant difference (t = 2.416, p = 0.024) and large effect size (Cohen's d = 0.95). Both groups showed significant within-group improvements, but the experimental group demonstrated greater consistency in learning outcomes with substantially reduced variance (474.35 to 43.91). Project-Based Learning significantly enhances Social Studies learning outcomes and promotes more equitable educational experiences among fourth-grade students. The findings support the implementation of student-centered pedagogical approaches in Indonesian elementary education contexts. Future research should examine PjBL effectiveness across larger samples and extended intervention periods while exploring individual learner characteristics that may influence outcomes.

Abstract

Reading interest plays a crucial role in academic achievement, particularly during elementary education when foundational literacy skills are established. However, limited research has examined this relationship within Indonesian elementary education contexts. This study investigated the correlation between reading interest and Indonesian language learning outcomes among fourth-grade students. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 16 fourth-grade students at SD Inpres 5 Taipa Laga selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a validated 13-item reading interest questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.85) and students' midterm examination scores in Indonesian language. Statistical analysis was conducted using Pearson's correlation with significance set at p ≤ 0.05. All participants demonstrated either high (44%) or very high (56%) reading interest levels. Academic performance showed similar distribution with 44% achieving good scores and 56% excellent scores. Correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between reading interest and learning outcomes (p = 0.003). Students with very high reading interest achieved excellent academic performance (88.9%) compared to those with high interest (14.3%). The findings validate Expectancy-Value Theory by demonstrating how intrinsic motivation correlates with academic achievement. Results align with previous research emphasizing the importance of reading interest in literacy development. The strong correlation suggests that educational interventions targeting reading interest cultivation may enhance academic outcomes. Study limitations include small sample size and cross-sectional design, necessitating longitudinal research with diverse populations to establish causal relationships.
