Abstract

This research was conducted at the first year of students at SMAN 3 Kotabumi. The study investigated the use of scanning technique in increasing students’ reading comprehension achievement especially in identifying specific information. The major objective of this research was to find out whether or not scanning technique could be used to develop students’ reading comprehension achievement significantly. This researh applied one group pretest posttest design. Students were given four treatments.The hypothesis testing was computed using SPSS version 15.0 at the level significant .05. According to the calculation of t-test, the result shows that there is significant increase on students’ reading comprehension after being taught through scanning technique (p.05, p=.000) which can be seen from the mean score of pretest 46.27 and that of post test 66.67 with the increase 20.40.In conclusion, the students’ reading skill especially in identifying the specific information increases through scanning technique as the technique in teaching reading comprehension.Keywords: identifying specific information, reading comprehension, scanning technique.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) efektifitas teknik DBCIRC untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca; 2) persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penerapan teknik DBCIRC. Peneliti menggunakan one class pre-test post-test design. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas 16 mahasiswa STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi yang dipilih secara purposive. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan tiga instrumen yaitu test pemahaman membaca, angket dan pedoman wawancara. Data dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa (p) value yang diperoleh dari perhitungan paired t-test adalah 0.000. Dapat dilihat bahwa (p) value (0.000) lebih kecil dari taraf signifikan (0.05). Artinya adalah Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima. Disamping itu, hasil angket dan wawancara menunjukan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penerapan teknik DBCIRC adalah positif. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan teknik DBCIRC sangat efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman mahasiswa dalam membaca.This study aimed to examine: 1)the effectiveness of DBCIRC technique to promote students reading comprehension achievement; 2) the students perception about the implementation of DBCIRC technique. This study employed one class-pre test post-test design. The sample consisted of 16 students of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi who were selected purposively. To gather the data, the researcher used reading comprehension test, questionaire and interview guideline. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that (p) value gotten from paired t-test was 0.000. It can be seen that (p) value (0.000) is less than significant level (0.05). In other words, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Besides, the result of students questionaire and interview reveal that students perception about the implementation DBCIRC technique was positive. Therefore, it can be concluded that DBCIRC technique was effective to be used to promote students reading comprehension achievement.Keywords: digital media, CIRC technique, reading achievement, students perception.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kesesuaian materi bacaan otentik di buku siswa dengan kriteria keontetikan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan meminta sepuluh guru dan dua ahli dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk memberi penilaian terhadap text melalui instrumen checklist. Sumber dari data yang dinilai adalah dokumen yang dikumpulkan dari tiga teks bacaan otentik di buku Pathway To English 2terbitan Erlangga. Instrumen penelitian ini adalah instrumen checklist yang terdiri dari kriteria keotentikan yang diusulkan oleh Mc Grath (2002) dan kriteria materi bacaan yang baik usulan Arias (2007). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa materi bacaan otentik pada buku yang dipilih telah memenuhi kriteria keotentikan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa teks otentik pada buku tersebut sesuai digunakan sebagai materi pembelajaran.The objective of this research was to examine the compatibility of the current authentic reading materials in students textbook with the criteria of authenticity. The subjects weretwelve English teachers. The sources of the data were documents of three authentic reading passages which were taken fromPathway To English 2by Erlangga Publisher. The instrument was the combination of criteria authenticity checklist proposed by McGrath (2002) and the criteria of good reading materials proposed by Arias (2007).The result showed that the authentic reading materials inthe selected textbook were compatible withthe criteria of authenticity.Thisindicates that the contents of the texts are appropriate to use as teaching materials.Keywords:Authentic Reading Materials, Authenticity, Students Text book.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether the crossword puzzle game can be used to improve the students‟ speaking ability and to determine whether there is a significant different before and after being taught through crossword puzzle game. This research was quantitative by nature. The design of this research was one group pretest-posttest. The subjects were class VIII D Muhammadiyah Junior High School 3 consisting of 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher administered speaking test and interview. The result show that the mean score of the students‟ pretest 58.00 and the posttest 82.00. By comparing between the mean score of pretest and posttest, it can be found that increase was 24.00. From the computation, it can be found that t-value (35.994) is higher than t-table (2.042). It means that there was improvement in speaking ability. The data show that value of two tail significance was 0.000 and the sign α (0.000 0.05). Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memeriksa i) efek signifikan secara statistik pada penggunaan materi otentik terhadap pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa, ii) persepsi siswa pada penggunaan materi otentik terhadap proses pembelajaran siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran dan kedua desain baik kuantitatif ataupun kualitatif sama-sama di gunakan secara seimbang. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X IPA 2 di SMAN 2 Metro. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada efek signifikan secara statistik dari materi otentik pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca dengan nilai signifikan (2-tailed) 0.00. Siswa menganggap bahwa materi otentik dapat meningkatkan pencapaian pemahaman membaca berdasarkan dari hasil wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini menyarankan bahwa materi otentik dapat memfasilitasi siswa untuk meningkatkan pencapaian pemahaman membaca mereka.The objectives of this research were to investigate i) a statistically significant effect on the use of authentic materials on the students’ reading comprehension achievement, ii) the students’ perceptions on the use of authentic materials toward the students’ learning process. The research used mix method and both quantitative and qualitative design were equally employed. The subjects were the students of class X IPA 2 in SMAN 2 Metro. The results showed that there was a statistically significant effect on the use of authentic materials on the students’ reading comprehension achievement with the significant value (2-tailed) was 0.00. The students perceived that authentic materials can enhance their reading comprehension achievement. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan penguasaan kosakata siswa setelah diajarkan melalui movies dan kesulitan siswa dalam penggunaan movies. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain one group pretest dan posttest. Tes kosakata dan interview digunakan untuk pengambilan data. Data ini di analisis menggunakan repeated measured T-test. Subyek penelitian ini 24 siswa dari kelas satu pada SMPN 26 Bandar Lampung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan antara pretest dan posttest. Dengan level signifikan adalah p0.05 (p=0.000). Penemuan kedua mengungkapkan bahwa siswa merasa sulit untuk memahami kata-kata atau frasa yang sulit, pengucapan penutur aslinya dan tingkat kecepatan penutur aslinya. Meskipun siswa menemukan kesulitan, siswa mampu meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata.Dari hasil yang didapat, disimpulkan bahwa movies direkomendasikan untuk digunakan sebagai alternatif media dalam mengajar kosakata.The aims of the research were to find out the improvement of students vocabulary mastery after being taught through movies and the students difficulties to the implementation of movies. The research used one group pretest and posttest design. The vocabulary test and interview were used to collect the data. The datas were analyzed by using repeated measured T-test. The subjects of this study were 24 students from the first grade students of SMPN 26 Bandar Lampung. The result showed that there was a statistically significant improvement of the students mean score between the pretest and the posttest with significant level p0.05 (p=0.000). The second finding revealed that the students found it hard to understand the difficult words or phrases, the native speakers pronunciation, and the native speakers speed rate. Even though the students find difficulties, the students are able to improve their vocabulary mastery. This suggests that moviescan be used as an alternative media in teaching vocabulary.Key words: improve, movies, vocabulary mastery

Abstract

Abstarct. The objective of this research is to find out teachers’ perception on teaching English vocabulary using songs as media for Senior High School. This is a quantitative research. The sample of the research was 50 Senior High School English teachers in Bandar Lampung. The data were obtained from the close-ended questionnaire through Google form and were analyzed using SPSS. Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui bagaimana mengajar membaca menggunakan authentic materials, untuk mengetahui bagaimana persepsi siswa dalam kegiatan membaca dengan menggunakan authentic materials, dan untuk mengetahui apa masalah yang dihadapi siswa dalam pelaksanaan pengajaran membaca menggunakan authentic materials. Penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini dipilih secara langsung yaitu X8. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada proses permasalahan murid serta pendapat dan perasaan mereka terhadap media tersebut. Data diambil dengan pelaksanaan observasi dan wawancara. Ketika menganalisis data, sebagian besar siswa tidak tahu apa itu authentic materials. Setelah menjelaskan authentic materials, mereka merasa tertarik dalam membaca. Mengenai dengan pendapat dan perasaan siswa, peneliti menemukan bahwa mereka tertarik bahwa authentic materials dapat membuat mereka lebih rajin membaca. Jadi, peneliti menyarankan bahwa authentic materials harus digunakan oleh siswa terutama.This research was conducted to find out how the teaching reading using authentic materials, to find out how the students perceptions in reading activities by using authentic materials, and to find out what problems the students face in the implementation of teaching reading using authentic materials. This research was descriptively qualitative. The subject of this research was chosen directly that was X8. This research focused on the process of students problems as well as their opinions and feelings towards the media. The data were taken by administering observation and interview. When analyzing the data, most students did not know what the authentic materials. After explained the authentic materials, they feel interest in reading. Concerning with students opinions and feelings, the researcher found that they were impressed that authentic materials can make them more diligent to read. Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) meneliti apakah ada perbedaan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa antara mereka yang diajarkan melalui teknik menebak dan melalui teknik menyimpulkan dan (2) menentukan salah satu dari dua teknik tersebut yang lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa. Peneliti menggunakan desain pretest posttest kelompok independen dalam menganalisa data. Sampel penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 4 dan XI IPA 5. Hasil penelitian mengindikasi bahwa teknik menebak lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan teknik menyimpulkan dalam meningkatkan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa. Nilai rata-rata posttest pada kelas eksperimen adalah 73.62 sedangkan pada kelas kontrol adalah 67.80. Nilai dari dua ekor signifikan adalah 0.000 yang berarti bahwa  ditolak dan diterima dimana 0.000 0.05.The objectives of the research are (1) to investigate whether there is any significant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement between those taught through guessing and through making inferences techniques and (2) to determine which one is more effective of the two techniques. The researcher applied independent group t-test in analysing the data. The sample of the research was Natural Science 4 and Natural Science 5 students. The finding indicated that guessing technique was more effective than making inferences technique in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement. The mean score of posttest in experimental class was 73.62 while in control class was 67.80. The value of two tailed significant was 0.000 which meant that  was rejected and  was accepted since 0.000 0.05.Keywords: guessing technique, improving, making inferences technique, reading

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to investigate whether there is a significant difference of students’ reading achievement between those who are taught using authentic and those using teacher-made materials, and to find out which of the two materials is more effective to teach reading. The population of this research was the first grade of SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung. The treatments were given in three times in both classes. Objective test was used as the instrument for data collection, which was administered in pretest and posttest. The data gained from this research were statically analyzed using independent t-test through SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The result shows that there is a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement between students who were taught by using authentic material and those using teacher-made material. The significant increase of students’ achievement in the experimental class 1 (authentic material) was (p0.05, p=0.000) with the increase of mean in pretest and posttest was 11.82 points. Meanwhile, the significant increase of students’ achievement in the experimental class 2 (teacher-made material) was (p0.05, p=0.000) with the increase was only 7.43 points. Based on the data, it can be concluded that there is significant different between authentic and teacher-made materials and authentic material is more effective than teacher-made material to improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement.  Keywords: authentic material, comparative, reading achievement, teacher-made material.
