Abstract

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a global health problem. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to various complications, one of which is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD, characterized by symptoms of pain, tingling, and discomfort in the lower extremities, can cause psychological problems and stress and affect the quality of life of sufferers. Purpose: To determine the relationship between peripheral artery disease (PAD), stress levels, and quality of life in people with diabetes mellitus. Method: This cross-sectional, correlational analytic study was conducted from November 2024 to January 2025 at the Kartasura Community Health Center, Sukoharjo Regency. The study focused on the prolanis group of diabetes mellitus patients, with a population of 42 respondents using a total sampling technique. Data analysis used descriptive analysis for univariate analysis and the Spearman Rank test for bivariate analysis. Results: The correlation test between Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and stress levels showed a p-value of 0.307. This leads to the acceptance of hypothesis H0 and the rejection of Ha, indicating no relationship between PAD and stress levels. Meanwhile, the correlation test between Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and quality of life reached a p-value of 0.001, leading to the rejection of hypothesis H0 and the acceptance of Ha, indicating a relationship between PAD and quality of life. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the incidence of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and stress levels, but there is a strong relationship between PAD and quality of life in people with diabetes mellitus. Suggestion: Community health centers, as primary healthcare facilities, must also expand coverage of chronic diseases and the prevention of their complications by providing health promotion and education, rather than solely focusing on the chronic disease itself. It is crucial for the community to consistently maintain good blood sugar management to prevent further complications and morbidity.  Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus; Quality of Life; Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD); Stress.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease caused by impaired insulin production or utilization, leading to serious complications if not properly managed. Non-compliance with medication remains a major challenge, contributing to poor outcomes and increased mortality. Nurses play a pivotal role as educators in improving patient adherence. Objective: To examine the relationship between the role of nurses as educators and medication compliance among DM patients. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on 129 DM patients at the Endocrinology Polyclinic of Dr. Moewardi Regional Hospital, Surakarta, from November to December 2024. Data on nurses’ educational roles and patients’ medication compliance were collected using structured questionnaires, including the validated Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). The Spearman Rank test was used for analysis. Results: The analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between the role of nurses as educators and medication compliance (p = 0.001; Rho = 0.634). Although most respondents (97.7%) rated the nurses’ role as “good,” more than half (54.2%) still demonstrated moderate to poor compliance. Conclusion: Nurses’ educational role has a strong positive impact on medication compliance in DM patients. Strengthening and sustaining educational strategies are essential to improve adherence and health outcomes
