Abstract

This study aims to map the publication trends of international journal articles related to the topic of mechanics in physics education using bibliometric analysis of the Scopus database. Bibliometric analysis was conducted on the Scopus database with the help of the RStudio application with the biblioshiny package. We analyzed 196 relevant documents filtered with various settings that support the research objectives. The analysis showed a rapid increase in the number of publications on mechanics in physics education since the 2000s (102 articles recorded in 2012–2021), driven by the development of quantitative methods. Physics Education, Physics Teacher, and Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Fisica were the journals with the most contributions. Active author mapping identified Pendrill A-M, Fones SW, and Rieber LP as the most prolific, while citation and h-index analyses showed the work of Rieber LP, Rodrigues H, Adams DM, and Gauld C as the most influential. Geographically, the United States, Brazil, and China dominated publications, with limited international collaboration. This study provided a comprehensive profile of mechanical research trends in physics education to guide future development efforts.

Abstract

A digital book is one of the media that can support learning because has the easiest access and can be equipped with multimedia features such as simulations. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of an Android-based thermodynamics digital book integrated with PhET simulation to improve students' graphical representation skills. The independent variable in this research is an Android-based thermodynamics digital book integrated with PhET simulations. In contrast, the dependent variable in this research is the ability of graphical representation skills. This research type is pre-experimental using a one-group pretest-posttest research design. At State High School in Yogyakarta, 72 students in the 11th grade participated in the cluster random sampling technique. N-Gain and eta square values showed that the students' graphical representation skills were significantly enhanced by the android-based thermodynamics digital book integrated with PhET simulation. This points out that using electronic physics learning materials and integrating technology has a positive effect on improving graphical representation skills. The recommendations made based on this research include that observation sheets be added to future research to observe the students better as they engage in each learning activity.

Abstract

The ability to solve problems and apply scientific processes is a critical component of 21st-century education, especially within the context of the Indonesian "Merdeka" curriculum, which promotes independent and adaptive learning. However, traditional assessment methods fail to capture these competencies adequately. This study aims to determine the feasibility of an assessment instrument designed to measure high school students' problem-solving ability and science process skills. The instrument was developed using Istiyono’s test development model and focused on the test trial stage, which involves expert validation, empirical analysis, reliability testing, and item difficulty analysis. Using Istiyono’s model, the development focused on expert validation, empirical testing, and item analysis. A total of 252 students from six high schools in Yogyakarta and surrounding regions participated in the study. The content validity was assessed using Aiken's V, showing all items to be valid. Content validity, evaluated using Aiken’s V, indicated all items were valid. Empirical validation using the QUEST program yielded INFIT MNSQ values of 0.99 ± 0.81 for problem-solving and 1.01 ± 0.21 for science process skills, confirming item validity. Reliability coefficients ranged from 0.61 to 0.97, indicating high reliability. The difficulty level of items was distributed across easy, medium, and difficult categories. These findings support the feasibility of the assessment instrument in evaluating students’ higher-order thinking skills. The findings demonstrated the instrument’s suitability for assessing complex cognitive and inquiry-based skills. The validated instrument offers practical implications for educators to improve learning through formative assessment aligned with curriculum goals.

Abstract

This research aims to develop the test instrument that is feasible in terms of validity, reliability, and difficulty level and to identify students' misconceptions in simple harmonic motion concepts. The development stages used in this research were the modifications result from Oriondo & Dalo-Antonio, which included: (1) planning and design development, (2) trying out, and (3) measurement and interpretation of results. The instrument has been developed and categorized as effective because it is declared valid and reliable based on the criteria of the lowest and highest limit of the INFIT MNSQ which is 0.77 and 1.30, all test items are fitted with the PCM model, and the instrument's reliability has an item reliability value of 0.73 with a good category. The test instrument was applied to 60 students of the tenth-grade of senior high school. Based on the results, the four-tier test instrument developed was able to identify students' conceptual understanding of 36.4%, and 17.7% of students only understood parts of concepts, 40.7% of students experienced misconceptions, and 5.2% of students did not know the concept. The biggest misconception occurred in the subtopic frequency of simple harmonic motion by 75%, the relationship of the rope length with the pendulum vibration period by 60%, and 58.3% about the relationship between the total spring constant and the spring frequency. The instrument developed in this research was able to detect students' misconceptions, especially student learning experiences about simple harmonic motion

Abstract

This systematic review aims to summarize the technological resources for teaching and learning about computational thinking (CT) in physics and provide suggestions to conduct new studies in future research. A total of 22 academic articles on CT in physical learning were reviewed from 2012 to 2022. The number of research participants was 3,269, with details of 2,752 college students, 439 high school students, 32 junior high school students, 20 elementary students, 21 teachers, and five librarians. This study confirmed that research on CT in physical learning has been dominated by two countries, the United States and Indonesia. Over the past 10 years, there has been an increase in physics courses focusing on topics in kinematics, force and motion, and electricity. The common method practices are quantitative and qualitative, with some developing learning. The implications of this research can inform education experts, educators, and technologists interested in the CT environment and technological development in physics learning. Computational skills in physics have the potential to improve cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes, including students’ thinking abilities. Students can benefit from their experience learning physics using the concept of CT because they can solve technology-based problems and develop various competencies needed in learning physics.
