Abstract

Abstract

The 21st century's digital disruption, intensified mobility, and the resurgence of identity-based polarization have reconfigured the aims of education beyond cognitive achievement toward ethical agency, intercultural competence, and socially responsible citizenship. This article examines how Indonesian pesantren-Islamic boarding schools with a long tradition of moral formation-cultivate multicultural character and what lessons their value-based ecology offers for global educational development. Using library research, the study conducts a philosophical and conceptual content analysis of peer-reviewed scholarship, pesantren-related policy and curricular documents, and global education frameworks, especially Global Citizenship Education and Education for Sustainable Development. The synthesis indicates that pesantren operationalize multicultural character through (1) ethical-theological foundations such as rahmatan lil 'alamin and ukhuwah insaniyah, (2) communal pedagogies emphasizing exemplary leadership (uswah), habituation, and community learning, and (3) adaptive innovations that integrate digital literacy with moral restraint. These practices foster moderation, empathy, inclusivity, and civic responsibility-capabilities aligned with 21st-century learning agendas. The article proposes a Pesantren-Based Multicultural Character Education Model (PBMCEM) as a transferable conceptual framework. Implications are discussed for curriculum design, teacher formation, and policy, highlighting how localized religious-moral traditions can inform internationally relevant strategies for multicultural character education.

Abstract

The phenomenon of low literacy quality in Indonesia is a very urgent problem to be overcome, considering that literacy is a basic skill that is very important for every individual, especially students. Literacy not only includes the ability to read and write, but also includes the skills of critical thinking, analyzing, and understanding information. With low literacy skills among students, this hinders their ability to access the more complex knowledge needed in later education. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors that affect the low quality of literacy in Indonesia and explore the development of innovative literacy teaching models that can be implemented in primary schools. In addition, this study also aims to provide recommendations for the development of education policies related to literacy. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method. Data was collected from relevant scientific literature, including journal articles, reference books, and conference articles. The main focus of this study is the text-based and technology-based literacy teaching model, as well as its relationship with students' critical thinking skills. The analysis technique used is thematic analysis to identify patterns and trends related to the research topic. Based on the research that was found, the low quality of literacy in Indonesia is caused by several factors, including lack of access to quality teaching materials, limited resources, and lack of teachers' skills in using technology in teaching literacy. The use of digital technologies such as e-books and gamification-based learning platforms can increase students' reading interest and improve their literacy skills. Literacy teaching models that integrate project-based and text-based approaches have proven effective in improving students' understanding and skills in literacy. This study concludes that to improve the quality of literacy in Indonesia, there needs to be reforms in teacher training, with a focus on integrating technology in literacy teaching. Teaching models that combine technology and text-based methods can be an effective solution to address literacy challenges in Indonesia. This research contributes to the development of literacy-based education policies that are more relevant and applicable at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine how the Habituation and Experiential Learning (HaEL) method enhances Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through active learning and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Islamic education. Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in the theoretical framework of experiential learning, habituation theory, constructivist learning, and Higher-Order Thinking Skills, which collectively emphasize the development of critical, analytical, creative, and reflective competencies through continuous practice and meaningful learning experiences. Literature review: Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of active learning and experiential approaches in improving students’ cognitive achievement; however, limited research has integrated habituation and experiential learning into a unified pedagogical model while explicitly linking HOTS development with the SDGs in Islamic education. Method: Employing a descriptive qualitative design, this research involved 15 informants comprising the vice principal, Islamic Education teacher, and Grade X and XI students from the Office Management and Animation programs at SMKN 3 Tangerang Selatan. Results: The findings reveal three major challenges affecting HOTS development, namely students’ limited critical thinking habits, insufficient implementation of active learning strategies, and the lack of systematic integration of SDGs values into Islamic Education instruction. The HaEL method addresses these challenges by combining structured habituation with experiential learning activities that encourage collaboration, problem-solving, reflection, and authentic classroom engagement. Implications: The study implies that integrating HaEL into Islamic education can strengthen educational quality, foster lifelong learning competencies, and support schools in implementing SDG 4 through innovative pedagogy. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in proposing HaEL as an integrated pedagogical framework that combines habituation and experiential learning to systematically cultivate HOTS while embedding SDGs-oriented values into Islamic education.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approach into Islamic Religious Education (IRE) to enhance students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and academic performance, while promoting value-based character development. Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in Bloom’s Taxonomy, focusing on cognitive levels C3 (application), C4 (analysis), and C5 (evaluation), combined with Islamic epistemology and constructivist learning theory, which emphasize holistic and contextual knowledge. Literature review: Existing literature highlights the success of STEAM in scientific disciplines, but its application in religious education remains limited. Classical Islamic scholars advocated the integration of rational, empirical, and spiritual knowledge. Embedding STEAM in IRE aligns with this legacy and supports Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, promoting inclusive, ethical, and future-ready education. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, this study involved eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 13 Surakarta. The experimental group received STEAM-based instruction on muamalah (Islamic economic ethics), while the control group followed traditional methods. Quantitative data were analyzed using t-tests; qualitative insights were drawn from student journals and reflections. Results: Students in the STEAM group showed significant improvements in HOTS, with mastery levels reaching 96%, alongside notable academic gains and deeper engagement. Implications: Integrating STEAM into IRE fosters critical, creative, and ethically grounded learners. It offers a transformative model for modern Islamic education that bridges tradition and innovation. Novelty: This study pioneers an interdisciplinary framework merging STEAM with Islamic values, providing empirical support for its relevance in 21st-century education.

Abstract

Objective:  Assess the limitations of the liberal and theological multicultural education paradigm and formulate an alternative framework that is able to bridge the two in the context of a majority Muslim society such as Indonesia. Theoretical framework: Integrating critical multicultural education with Religious Studies as a non-confessional, phenomenological, and dialogical approach that serves as a bridge between secular relativism and theological absolutism. Literature review: Based on an interdisciplinary literature review in multicultural education, religious education, and educational philosophy that highlights criticism of liberal and theological paradigms. Method: Using a qualitative approach with philosophical and conceptual design through literature studies and expert interviews to strengthen theoretical analysis. Results: The liberal paradigm tends to marginalize religion to the private sphere, while the theological paradigm is exclusive and less dialogical. Alternatively, Religious Multicultural Education is proposed as a middle ground approach that emphasizes epistemic plurality and interreligious dialogue. Implications: Contribute to the development of more inclusive education policies and curricula in a religiously plural society that faces tensions between secular and confessional models. Novelty: It lies in the synthesis between multicultural education and Religious Studies that produces a new model that is contextual, dialogical, and transcends the existing paradigm dichotomy.
