Abstract

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a critical neurodegenerative disorder affecting the central nervous system and often causing impaired movement and cognitive function in patients. In addition, its diagnosis in the early stages requires a complex and time-consuming process because all existing tests such as electroencephalography or blood examinations lack effectiveness and accuracy. Several studies explored PD prediction using sound, with a specific focus on the development of classification models to enhance accuracy. The majority of these neglected crucial aspects including feature extraction and proper parameter tuning, leading to low accuracy. Objective: This study aims to optimize performance of voice-based PD prediction through feature extraction, with the goal of reducing data dimensions and improving model computational efficiency. Additionally, appropriate parameters will be selected for enhancement of the ability of the model to identify both PD cases and healthy individuals. Methods: The proposed new model applied an OpenML dataset comprising voice recordings from 31 individuals, namely 23 PD patients and 8 healthy participants. The experimental process included the initial use of the SVM algorithm, followed by implementing PCA for feature extraction to enhance machine learning accuracy. Subsequently, data balancing with SMOTE was conducted, and GridSearchCV was used to identify the best parameter combination based on the predicted model characteristics.  Result: Evaluation of the proposed model showed an impressive accuracy of 97.44%, sensitivity of 100%, and specificity of 85.71%. This excellent result was achieved with a limited dataset and a 10-fold cross-validation tuning, rendering the model sensitive to the training data. Conclusion: This study successfully enhanced the prediction model accuracy through the SVM+PCA+GridSearchCV+CV method. However, future investigations should consider an appropriate number of folds for a small dataset, explore alternative cross-validation methods, and expand the dataset to enhance model generalizability.   Keywords: GridSearchCV, Parkinson Disaese, SVM, PCA, SMOTE, Voice/Speech

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop IPAS teaching materials using the RADEC model based on metacognitive strategies to enhance critical and creative thinking skills among elementary school students. The research follows the Research & Development approach with the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The study involves 84 elementary school students in Surakarta. Data were collected through literature review, expert validation, pretests and posttests, observations, interviews, and documentation. Validation results confirmed that the developed book is valid and suitable for use in terms of content, language, and presentation. A paired sample T-test was conducted on the pretest and posttest results of critical and creative thinking skills for 84 student respondents. The t-test results indicated a significance value of 0.00<0.05 for both pretest and posttest scores of critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills. This suggests a significant difference in the average scores between the pretest and posttest, indicating the influence of the developed book on critical and creative thinking skills. The NGain test results for pretest and posttest scores of critical thinking skills were 70.9252, and for creative thinking skills, it was 70.9284. With these values, it can be concluded that the developed book falls into the category of being sufficiently effective in influencing the critical and creative thinking skills of students

Abstract

This qualitative research on Cyberpragmatic attempts to explore the application of politeness and impoliteness principles in student-lecturer internet-mediated communication in English and Indonesian languages at two faculties of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Salatiga. The native speakers' perceptions of those strategies and principles as applied in the online chatroom were also elicited to confirm the descriptive analysis of the utterances. Pragmatic data were taken, categorized, and selected from Whatsapp conversation and email correspondence screenshots between lecturers and students in eight (8) online English Language classes and six (6) classes on Ushul Fiqh subjects at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Salatiga. Additionally, as demonstrated in the screenshots, an online questionnaire was used to elicit data on students' and lecturers' perspectives on the cyberpragmatic activities. The descriptive analysis shows that the students considered the principles of politeness as a prominent aspect of their communicative actions and managed to appropriately applied it in their cyberpragmatic activities. Additional pragmatic features of religious expressions were also used to amplify the politeness effect. Nevertheless, there were some cases where impoliteness principles were used by the students, regardless of their awareness of their pragmatic consequences. The acceptability judgement questionnaire confirmed the level of politeness and impoliteness strategies previously described. Consequently, future research may benefit from this study by exploring other aspects of cyberpragmatics such as ethnicity, gender, and other socio-political aspects, from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Abstract

Ageing is likely to become a 'gender issue' with a big number of women surviving into very old age in almost all the countries of the world. Japanese women have longer longevity than Japanese men. What is the secret behind the higher lifespan of Japanese women compared to Japanese men? Is it related to their ikigai? In this qualitative approach research, we chose the subjects as elderly men and women who participated in Easy English Conversation Courses in Kitakyushu Nenchousha Daigakkou (Kitakyushu Elder University). We assumed that to participate in Easy English Conversation Courses may change their life and enhance ikigai among the elderly, but there are gender differences in their elderly learning motivation. Understanding gender-specific factors related to ikigai in older adults could be beneficial in improving their overall well-being.
