Abstract

Many community activities utilize the Kampar River watershed in the Pangkalan Kerinci Bridge area such as ports, restaurants, cultivation of floating net cages, and sanitary activities. These various activities will affect the water quality there. Therefore monitoring water quality in the region needs to be done to see the quality of its waters which refers to the calculation of the Pollution Index and determine the management of these watersheds to be suitable for aquaculture activities. This research was conducted in November 2017 - February 2018. The survey included measuring water samples and observing the condition of the border and the activities of the community around the river water bodies. Ex situ analysis was conducted at the Laboratory of Ecology and Environmental Management of the Water Faculty of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, University of Riau. The parameters observed were TSS, DO, COD, BOD, pH, and Total P. Water sample measurements were carried out once at 10 am during sunny weather conditions. There are three sampling points, namely: the area under the Pangkalan Kerinci Bridge (Station I); river wash area 1 (Station II); and river rinse area 2 (Station III). From the results, it is known that overall the Kampar River area around the Pangkalan Kerinci Bridge is in the light-polluted category. Based on the IP value, the condition of the waters in this region can be sorted from high to low polluted that is sequentiallyStation I (2.27), Station II (1.53), and Station III (1.51). It is known that pollutants are organic materials that come from community activities around water bodies. This is evidenced by the high BOD value in water samples. Handling is needed for organic wastes discharged in water bodies to be able to improve the quality of these waters to make them suitable for aquaculture activities.

Abstract

The presence of fish cage culture activities may affects the environmentalcondition as the remain of fish feed pellets may enter the surrounding water and itmay serve as food resources for wild fish species such as Puntius schawanefeldi .To understand the impact of fish floating cage activities on feeding habit of P.schawanefeldi and economical condition of traditional fishermen in the KotoPanjang Dam, a study has been conducted on April to June 2013. Fish sampleswere collected from 5 stations, Stations 1, 2 and 3 were in the dam, around thecage, while station 4 and 5 were in the area that has no cage. Data of 24 hoursfish feeding habit were obtained by capturing fish for a 3 days period (once/ 3hours, at different time). Stomach content was then removed, identified andanalyzed using a volumetric method. Results shown that the stomach content offish living around the cage and the fish living far from the cage are different.Stomach content of the fish from the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd stations was dominated byfish feed pellet remains (>90%), while that of the fish living in the area with nocage was dominated by debris (>90%). These facts indicate P. schawanefeldi is anopportunist fish, its feeding habit is changing. Fish living around the cage preferto feed on commercial fish feed pellet remains. The presence of P. schawanefeldiaround the cage, however, increase the income of traditional fishermen as theyable to caught around 50 – 80 kg of fish/ week, compare to 10 – 20 kg fish/ weekin the 4 th and 5 th stations. Data obtained indicate that the presence of fish cageaffect the feeding habit of P. schawanefeldi and positively affect the income of thetraditional fishermen. Keywords: Puntius schawanefeldi, feeding habit, fish floating cage, KotoPanjang Dam

Abstract

This researct was conducted on September 2015 to April 2016. Fish reproduction is controlled by endocrine system that is affected by external factors such as photoperiod. Changing in photoperiod may affect the gonad development in fish. To understand the effect of different photoperiod in gonad development of O. hypopthalmus, the fishes were reared in fiber tanks (140 x 60 x 40 cm) with water circulation system and completed with aerator. The treatments applied were : natural photoperiod, 24D (continuous dark), 16D8L (16 hours dark and 8 hours light), 12D12L (12 hours dark and 12 hours light), 8D16L (8 hours dark and 16 hours light) and 24L (25 continuous light), and the fish were feed on shrimp and cricket enriched commercial pellet. The fishes were sampled once/month, 4 fishes/sample. Parameters investigated were body length, body weight, gonad development, hepatosomatic index (HSI), viscerosomatic index (VSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Based on the research  results different photoperiod did not affect the gonad development of O. hypopthalmus. There was no special pattern in gonad development in all treatments. The gonads were first developed in 13 – 37 weeks old male and female fishes. The female gonad, however, developed earlier than that of the male. The smallest female with developed gonad was 10.65 cm TL and 5.55 g BW. While that of the male was 16.7 cm TL and 16.7 g BW. During the research there was no mature fish.  The HSI and VSI shown similar patterns, it was increased by the second month (17 weeks old fish) and then decreased. This decrement indicates that the energy stored has been used for gonad development. Based on data obtained it can be concluded that the photoperiod does not affect the gonad development of ompok hyopthalmus.
