Abstract

This study explores how formal education preserves local culture through an ethno-learning approach in government-based schools in Cirebon, Indonesia. Using a multisite ethnographic method, the research was conducted over one year in four secondary schools known for integrating Cirebonese cultural values into teaching. The integration of local culture such as tari topeng (mask dance), gamelan, the Cirebonese language, and the Jelajah Budaya (Cultural Exploration) program helps strengthen students’ cultural identity, develop moral character, and foster positive social dispositions. Teachers act as cultural mediators, connecting tradition with contemporary education. Student engagement varies depending on family background and cultural exposure outside school. Challenges include limited resources, inconsistent student interest, and the need for more adaptive, student-centered pedagogies. The study highlights that culture-based education is not merely supplementary but foundational in forming character, reinforcing identity, and promoting cultural sustainability. It argues for a more contextual, humanistic model of education that aligns with local realities while addressing global educational demands.

Abstract

Regional songs serve as repositories of cultural values and identity markers, yet limited scholarly attention has examined their role in transmitting religious and social values within specific ethnic communities. This study applies Paul Ricoeur's three-stage hermeneutic framework—explanation, understanding, and appropriation—to analyze four purposively selected songs by Anang Ardiansyah: Batasmiyah, Bismillah Kata Bamula, Puhun Rambai, and Paris Barantai. Selection criteria included: (1) representation of different thematic elements (religious practice, cultural identity, social solidarity, environmental connection), (2) widespread recognition within Banjar communities, and (3) availability of complete lyrical texts. The explanation stage involved literal textual analysis, understanding examined cultural-contextual meanings within Banjar Islamic traditions, and appropriation explored contemporary relevance for cultural preservation. Analysis reveals three primary symbolic domains: (1) religious integration through ritual terminology ("Bismillah kata bamula", "batapung tawar") demonstrating Islamic-Banjar cultural synthesis, (2) social solidarity mechanisms embedded in zakat and gotong royong references that prescribe communal responsibility, and (3) place-based identity construction through geographical markers ("Kotabaru gunungnya bamega") and natural symbols (rambai tree) that anchor cultural belonging. The study's theoretical contribution lies in demonstrating how Ricoeur's hermeneutic appropriation stage can illuminate the contemporary transmission of traditional values through musical narratives. These findings provide empirical evidence for integrating Anang Ardiansyah's compositions into formal Islamic education curricula as supplementary materials for akhlaq (character) instruction, and suggest developing community-based cultural workshops using these songs as discussion frameworks for intergenerational value transmission among Banjar diaspora communities.

Abstract

The Cakap Baca literacy program is a program that has been implemented at SMP Negeri 1 Banjarmasin as part of the Teaching Assistance activities. This literacy program falls under the category of basic literacy, specifically reading literacy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cakap Baca program at SMP Negeri 1 Banjarmasin, which is designed to improve participants’ abilities to understand, analyze, and evaluate reading texts, using the Kirkpatrick evaluation model. The method used is qualitative, employing the model developed by Donald Kirkpatrick, which consists of four levels: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document studies. Observations were conducted in stages: during the preparation of the teaching assistance work program, during the implementation of the Cakap Baca program, and after the program was completed. Interviews were conducted throughout the research process, involving 27 students and 2 educators as respondents to obtain in-depth data about their experiences and perceptions of the program. Document studies focused on analyzing students’ work as material for evaluating the program’s success. The study showed positive results across all four levels of the Kirkpatrick evaluation. At the reaction level, students responded enthusiastically and enjoyed the fun and interactive methods. At the learning level, there was an improvement in reading ability and communication skills, although challenges remained in summarizing and critical thinking. At the behavior level, positive changes were observed in reading habits and increased visits to the school’s literacy facilities, although ongoing support is still needed. At the results level, the program impacted the improvement of subject comprehension, especially in Indonesian language, and encouraged the growth of a literacy culture. The positive outcomes of the Cakap Baca program demonstrate its potential as a sustainable literacy initiative that effectively enhances reading skills and fosters a culture of literacy among students. Abstract

The Reform Era of 1998, followed by rapid globalization and technological advancement, has profoundly affected the moral foundation of Indonesia’s younger generation. Data from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI, 2022) show that West Java ranks highest in child protection cases, contributing to the increasing number of juvenile offenders at the Class II Juvenile Correctional Institution (LPKA) in Bandung, particularly in cases involving sexual misconduct. This situation demands a character development strategy that transcends administrative correction and focuses on moral and spiritual formation grounded in Pancasila, especially its first principle, Belief in the One and Only God. This study aims to design and evaluate a religious character development strategy using a habituation method implemented through supplementary classes. Employing a mixed-methods exploratory sequential design, the research began with qualitative data collection through observation, interviews, and document analysis, followed by quantitative analysis using pre-test and post-test data examined through the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The findings revealed that 29 out of 30 participants showed improved post-test scores, indicating significant positive changes in religious values, discipline, and spiritual awareness. These results confirm the effectiveness of the habituation-based strategy in fostering religious character and suggest that the model can be adopted by other juvenile correctional institutions to cultivate responsible, spiritually conscious youth with strong commitment to religious and national values.

Abstract

The issue of character development in higher education remains a crucial challenge in preparing students to become responsible and value-driven individuals. To address this, local historical figures can serve as exemplary models in the learning process, particularly in strengthening students’ moral and cultural foundations. This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of the Prince Hidayatullah Exemplary-Based Learning Model as an alternative approach to character education in universities. A qualitative approach with descriptive-qualitative methods was employed to explore the implementation and outcomes of the model. The findings reveal that the model effectively fosters key values, including responsibility, nationalism, integrity, and religiosity. The role of local historical figures proved to be a strong medium for emotional and cultural internalization of values, influencing students’ attitudes and behaviors. The study concludes that integrating exemplary figures into value-based curricula is highly relevant to the current educational context. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of reflective learning as a strategy for character formation. This model not only aligns with the Merdeka Belajar policy but also offers a contextually grounded framework for strengthening character in higher education.

Abstract

Education serves not only as a medium for transferring knowledge but also as a process of shaping values and character that are manifested in real behavior. One of the fundamental character traits that must be nurtured in higher education is discipline, particularly in the context of globalization and the competitive tourism industry that demands professionalism. This study aims to analyze the achievement of students’ discipline character in the Cultural Tourism Department through the Travel Industry Practicum, based on five key indicators: obedience, compliance, loyalty, regularity, and orderliness. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach using a questionnaire instrument adapted from Patmawati (2013). The population consisted of 75 students from the 2021 cohort, with a sample of 43 respondents determined through Slovin’s formula and convenience sampling. The findings reveal that during the initial phase of the practicum, several weaknesses were observed in students’ discipline, such as tardiness, uniform neatness, and consistency in task completion. However, after completing the practicum over one semester, all discipline indicators showed significant improvement, reaching the “very good” category with an average score of 4,66. These results indicate that practical field experience combined with institutional guidance effectively strengthens students’ internalization of discipline values. In conclusion, the Travel Industry Practicum is not only a vehicle for applying academic theory, but also serves as an effective strategy for character building. The results of this study make an important contribution to strengthening Thomas Lickona's noble character education framework through its application in higher education, particularly in the field of tourism. These findings can serve as a strategic basis for policy formulation and curriculum development oriented towards the formation of disciplinary character, so that higher education can produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also excel in work ethic and character values.
