Abstract

There is a wide variety of interrelated social media platforms. Gender orientation can affect preferences for language use in particular social media, especially Quora, which is famous as a medium for collecting questions and answers on specific topics. Breaking new ground, this study uniquely juxtaposes gender orientation with linguistic preferences on Quora, an unexplored research area. This content analysis design employed textual data posted by Quora users in the "Skilled English Writing" forum during January-March 2023. Following Lakoff's gendered language theory, women frequently employ hedges to indicate uncertainty, whereas men use boosters to express confidence. The language of women was characterized by greater formality and formal grammar, whereas men favored informal abbreviations. In addition, women utilized emoticons for emphasis more frequently than males. These linguistic differences result from complex social, cultural, biological, and psychological effects, underscoring the importance of gender and social factors in language formation.

Abstract

The industrial revolution is changing the way people live today. Everything can change by technological advances that integrate themselves into people's lives, including in the world of education. Indonesia has made 10 national priorities designed to face the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, including redesigning the educational curriculum to adapt to the 4.0 Industrial era, which utilizes technology in learning. It must indirectly be followed by strengthening the competence of prospective teacher students in designing and developing increasingly meaningful learning. Prospective teacher students must be able to develop abilities in facing the development of the times, including mastery of technology and competence according to Law no. 14 of 2005 and 21st-century abilities. This study aims to describe the knowledge of prospective teacher students about technology-assisted learning media and classify the competencies and abilities of the students. In this study, a quantitative approach was used. The respondents were 71 students of the English Language Education (TBI) IAIN Ponorogo. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and cluster analysis. The results of the study showed that TBI students have begun to get to know several technology-assisted learning media such as Google Classroom, Quizizz, and other interactive learning media. However, there are still many who only know one type of media. The results of competency mapping according to Law no. 14 of 2005 and 21st-century abilities show that many TBI students are still included in the low ability group. These results show that students should make more efforts to improve their abilities and competencies before entering society. Students must begin to be active to improve their mastery of technology-assisted learning media to be able to keep up with the world’s development.

The result of this research showed that the average of post-test of experimental class is 87.70 and the average score of post-test of control class is 77.74. The value of t-test = 3,226 with df = 59 on level significance 5%. According to the table value “t” = 1,671. Then tcount  higher than ttable (3,226 > 1,671). Therefore, H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. So, it can be concluded that there is significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery that used socrative application for formative assessment and that are not. Abstract

The involvement of women in the public sphere in Saudi Arabia has increased after Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman officially declared the vision of Saudi Arabia 2030. In contrast to Saudi Arabia's Wahhabi clerics who tend to domesticate the role of women, the government in its vision actually encourages women to be involved in the public sphere. This paper seeks to describe the discourse on women's empowerment and reveal the ideology that underlies it and to explain the implications of the construction of this discourse on changes in public policy in Saudi Arabia. The author use critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool. The author concludes, First, the discourse on women's empowerment in the Saudi 2030 vision document is manifested in giving equal roles to women and men to be involved in social and economic activities. Women in Saudi's 2030 vision are positioned as national assets that are open, competitive, hardworking, and able to drive the economy. Second, the discourse that encourages women to be involved in public activities is inseparable from the ideology of the current Saudi Arabian government which tends to lead to socio-economic liberalization. In this context, women's empowerment is used for the benefit of economic growth and the transformation of new, more open religious social conditions (infitah). Third, the discourse on women's empowerment in the Saudi 2030 vision influences changes in public policy in Saudi Arabia. The old policies from the rulings of the ulama were replaced with new policies that gave women more freedom to participate in the public sphere.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the implementation of Team-Based Learning (TBL) combined with technology, in this case is the Canvas Learning Management System (Canvas LMS), to improve reading skills and critical thinking skills among students from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 112 third-semester students in Critical Reading courses. The sample was determined through cluster random sampling, which consisted of a C class that consisted of 28 students of the English Department in the State Islamic Institution of Ponorogo. Pre-test and post-test were administered, and data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The findings showed a significant enhancement in reading skills due to the integration of Canvas LMS into TBL (sig = 0.000 < 0.005), as evidenced by the increased scores on the mean scores of pre-test and post-test from 62.57 to 80.61. Students also showed an increase in their critical thinking skills. The implications of these findings provide further insights into the effectiveness of integrating TBL with the use of technology to improve academic reading and critical thinking in EFL settings and a suggested strategy for developing such essential skills in university contexts.
