Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ decision-making processes in solving open mathematical problems based on refractive thinking. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The participants were undergraduate students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at the State University of Malang, selected purposively based on decision-making style, domicile, and understanding of the problem context. Research instruments included validated open-ended problem sets based on graph theory and semi-structured interview guides. Data were collected through problem-solving tasks and in-depth interviews, and then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students experienced five stages of reflective thinking—perplexity, investigation, construction, evaluation, and decision—throughout the decision-making process. Students with a rational style demonstrated more systematic and consistent reasoning, while intuitive, dependent, and avoidant students tended to perform incomplete evaluations. These results highlight that refractive thinking plays a crucial role in forming logical and adaptive decisions. The study implies that open-ended, context-based mathematics learning can effectively enhance students’ higher-order thinking through reflective and evaluative reasoning. Future research should explore the development of instructional models and digital-based learning environments that systematically foster reflective thinking and decision-making skills across diverse cognitive styles and educational levels.

Abstract

Background: The availability and quality of learning materials directly impact the effectiveness of teaching. At SMA Negeri 4 Takalar, the majority of teachers (90%) rely on printed textbooks, which are limited in number, thus hindering students' access to learning resources. This community service program aims to enhance teachers' ability to design digital learning materials rich in multiple representations (text, images, audio, video, interactive quizzes) with the support of AI-based applications. Methods: The method employed involves in-house training and direct mentoring on the use of AI in creating digital learning materials, utilizing applications such as Prezi, ChatGPT, Canva, Invideo, and Book Creator. Results: The results showed a significant improvement in teachers' understanding of the multiple representations approach, which enriches learning materials with various multimodal elements. Additionally, teachers gained skills in creating AI-assisted digital learning materials, enabling them to independently produce interactive content. More than 80% of teachers have applied more diverse representations in their teaching modules, including text, images, audio, and videos. Conclusions: This program successfully improved teachers' ability to create digital learning materials for use in their respective classrooms.

Abstract

Abstract

The This study aimed to assess students' proficiency in using derivational suffixes, focusing on their ability to apply four types of suffixes through the online platform Google Forms. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, with a sample of 38 fifth-semester English education students from Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Data were collected using multiple-choice tests and analyzed by calculating total scores, percentages, and average proficiency levels. The findings revealed that 10.53% of students achieved 'Excellent' and 'Very Good' proficiency, while 23.68% were classified as 'Good'. Additionally, 7.89% fell into the 'Fairly Good' and 'Fair' categories. However, 28.95% of students were in the 'Poor' category, and 10.53% were classified as 'Very Poor'. Further analysis showed that students demonstrated the highest competence in verb suffixes, with an average score of 66.45%, followed by adverbial suffixes at 55%, adjective suffixes at 26%, verb suffixes at 10%, and noun suffixes at 9%. These results indicate that overall proficiency in suffix usage among fifth-semester students remains relatively low, highlighting the need for targeted instructional strategies to improve their understanding and application of derivational suffixes.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students’ perceptions of using QuillBot as a digital learning assistant in an English writing class at Bosowa University. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method and involved six third-semester students who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students held positive perceptions of QuillBot, as its features helped improve writing quality, enrich vocabulary, correct grammatical errors, and save time in completing assignments. However, several challenges were also identified, including changes in meaning after paraphrasing, confusion caused by multiple mode options, limited access in the free version, and the potential decline in writing independence. Overall, QuillBot was considered beneficial as a supporting tool, but its use needed to be balanced with independent writing practice to ensure the continued development of students’ language skills.
