Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out and analyze the effect of a worksheet based learning of rotational dynamics on students’ critical thinking skills viewed from IQ score and the correlation between critical thinking skills and the students’ IQ score. This research has been conducted in even semester of the academic year of 2017/2018, in university in Bandung area. All students in a university in Bandung City are the population for this study with the target population are all students in the first year in the university year of 2017/2018. The sample in this study is the first semester of Physics Education students as an experimental group, selected using purposive sampling technique, with data collecting tool in the form of written test of critical thinking skill and IQ. The research design used is one shot case design. A hypothesis test is done by using correlation and regression. The whole test of this data analysis used SPSS program. The results of this study indicate that the learning-based student's worksheet on the concept of Rotational Dynamics significantly influences students' critical thinking skills. It can be seen from the score of n-gain which is 0.5. Based on the calculation on correlation obtained value of 0.185 <0.5, it means that  IQ scores correlated weakly to the students’ critical thinking score, while the regression value of 0.303> 0.05, in other words, the students’ IQ score does not affect the students’ critical thinking skills. So it can be concluded that there is no correlation between IQ and critical thinking skills which seen from the results of correlation and regression analysis.

Abstract

Practicum is an important part of Physics learning that cannot be ignored even in distance learning. Obstacles of practicum facilities faced by students can be overcome by using sensor on smartphones as a measuring tool. In this study, the use of the accelerometer sensor on a smartphone has been carried out to analyze the concept of momentum and impulse through the collision of two toy cars. Two toy cars A and B with smartphones attached have their respective masses of m1 0.31345 kg and m2 0.32116 kg. Car A was idle and car B was moved until it collided car A. In the event of a collision, the accelerometer sensor recorded acceleration data (a) versus time (t). Data (a) versus time (t) was represented in the form of a curve. Next, the data were analyzed. From the graph obtained data t1 =1.237 seconds, when car B started to exert a contact force on car A. The contact time between cars was t = 0.025 seconds. The maximum acceleration experienced by car A during a collision was a = 27.919 m/s2. From the area of the curve (a) vs (t) the impulse value was 0.1217 (N. sec) which is also the value of the change in momentum of car A, with car A's speed after the collision of 0.427 m/s. Thus, the accelerometer sensor on a smartphone can be used to assist students in finding important concepts through practical activities. The use of the accelerometer sensor is expected to help students to facilitate understanding the concepts of momentum and impulse.

Abstract

This study was an online classroom action research (PTK) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to improve learning outcomes in calculus classes for physics engineering students using think pairs share. The online think pairs share (OTPS) learning model was optimized using the Learning Management System (LMS) platform in two learning cycles. The research sample was 46 students in the study program of physics engineering. The data were obtained from the pre-test-post-test scores, group discussions, and individual presentations. The results showed that the pre-test and post-test scores in cycle I were 37.16 and 68.41, while in cycle II, 41.20 and 68.65, respectively. In addition, the daily student score from the group discussion and individual presentation was 60.68 for the cycle I and 60.15 for cycle II. Furthermore, inferential analysis using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test proves that tcount > ttable. Hence, the result indicated that implementing the OTPS learning model optimized using LMS could improve the student learning outcomes in calculus.
