Abstract

This study aimed to characterize the antioxidant and anticholesterol activities of ethanol extract of banyan leaves (Ficus benjamina L.) in vitro. Hypercholesterolemia is closely associated with oxidative stress, particularly LDL oxidation, which contributes to atherosclerosis. Ethanol extraction was performed using maceration method with 96% ethanol. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the ABTS radical scavenging method, while anticholesterol activity was determined using the Liebermann–Burchard method measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The ethanol extract demonstrated strong antioxidant activity based on IC₅₀ value and showed significant cholesterol reduction activity in a concentration-dependent manner. The findings indicate that the ethanol extract of Ficus benjamina L. leaves possesses promising bioactivity as a natural antioxidant and anticholesterol agent. These activities are likely associated with the presence of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The study supports the potential development of standardized herbal preparations from banyan leaf extract.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a tropical country, has high ultraviolet (UV) radiation intensity, which increases the risk of skin damage due to oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the correlation between Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values and antioxidant capacity of the ethyl acetate fraction from bandotan leaves (Ageratum conyzoides L.). The study involved extraction by maceration using 96% ethanol, liquid-liquid fractionation, phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity testing using the ABTS method, and SPF value determination by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results showed that the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity with an IC₅₀ value of 21.726 ppm (very strong category) and the highest SPF value of 23.28 (ultra protection category). Statistical analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between antioxidant capacity and SPF values, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.647 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.418 (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that the ethyl acetate fraction of bandotan leaves has potential to be developed as a natural sunscreen ingredient with high antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Pedada fruit (Sonneratia caseolaris) is a mangrove species recognized for its rich content of bioactive compounds that may provide various health benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and anticholesterol activities of the ethyl acetate fraction of pedada fruit and to analyze the correlation between these two biological activities. The extraction process was conducted using ethanol maceration followed by solvent–solvent fractionation to obtain the ethyl acetate fraction. Antioxidant activity was measured using the ABTS radical scavenging method, while anticholesterol activity was assessed through an in vitro cholesterol inhibition assay. The effectiveness of both activities was expressed in IC₅₀ values. The results demonstrated that the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited strong antioxidant and anticholesterol properties, with IC₅₀ values of 20.555 ppm and 9.636 ppm, respectively. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between antioxidant and anticholesterol activities (r = 0.601; p = 0.005), indicating promising potential as a natural therapeutic agent.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia, defined as elevated levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream, is widely recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Antioxidants play an important role in preventing oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals through electron donation, thereby helping to reduce lipid peroxidation associated with high cholesterol levels. This study aims to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of buni leaves (Antidesma bunius) through laboratory experimentation. The leaves were extracted using the maceration method with 96% ethanol, followed by fractionation with ethyl acetate to obtain the targeted fraction. The in vitro anticholesterol activity was determined using the Liebermann–Burchard method and measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Data analysis was performed using linear regression to calculate the IC₅₀ value. The results demonstrated that the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited very strong cholesterol-lowering activity, with an IC₅₀ value of 1,659 ppm/µg/mL, indicating promising potential as a natural antihypercholesterolemic agent.

Abstract

The use of cosmetics, especially day creams, is increasing along with the high public interest in facial skin care. However, day cream products are still found to potentially contain hydroquinone, a skin whitening agent whose use is restricted because it can cause harmful side effects on skin health. This study aims to identify the presence and determine the levels of hydroquinone in day cream products circulating in District X, Sukoharjo Regency, and to assess their compliance with the regulations of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM). This study was a descriptive analytical study using a purposive sampling technique. A total of 15 day cream products were analyzed, consisting of 8 BPOM-registered products and 7 products not registered with BPOM. Qualitative analysis was conducted using color reaction tests with FeCl₃, Benedict’s, and o-phenanthroline reagents. Furthermore, quantitative analysis was performed using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method to accurately and specifically confirm the presence and determine the levels of hydroquinone. The results showed that the color reaction test has limitations in specifically identifying hydroquinone. HPLC confirmation revealed the presence of hydroquinone in several day cream samples, with concentrations ranging from 0.024% to 0.150%. These findings indicate the need for stricter monitoring of day cream distribution to ensure the safety of cosmetic products for the wider public.

Abstract

Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent that effectively inhibits melanogenesis, but its use in cosmetics is restricted due to the potential for serious side effects. Although banned in over-the-counter cosmetics, hydroquinone is still found in unregistered night cream products. This study aims to detect the presence, determine the levels of hydroquinone, and evaluate its safety risks in night cream products sold in District X, Sukoharjo Regency. The study was conducted experimentally in a laboratory using a purposive sampling technique on 15 night cream samples consisting of 8 BPOM-registered products and 7 non-BPOM products. Qualitative analysis was carried out using FeCl₃, Benedict's, and o-phenanthroline color reaction tests, while quantitative analysis used the HPLC method with a C18 column and a UV-Vis detector at a wavelength of 280 nm. The results showed that all BPOM-registered samples did not contain hydroquinone, while several non-BPOM samples were detected to contain hydroquinone at levels ranging from 0.0688%–0.2043%. These findings indicate a higher safety risk in non-BPOM products. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of strengthening regulatory oversight and increasing public literacy in choosing safe and legal cosmetic products.

Abstract

Pedada (Sonneratia caseolaris) is one type of mangrove from the genus Sonneratia with high flavonoid content that has the potential as an antioxidant. Flavonoids as antioxidants can improve blood lipid profiles by lowering total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, and increasing HDL. In addition, flavonoids can inhibit the activity of Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) so that it has the potential as an antihypertensive. This study aims to examine the potential of kedabu leaf extract as an antioxidant, antihypertensive and antihyperlipidemia agent tested in vitro. Antioxidant testing was carried out using the ABTS (2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6sulfonate) method, antihypertensive testing was carried out by inhibiting Angiotensin converting enzyme and antihyperlipidemia was carried out by inhibiting the lipase enzyme. The results of the study showed that the total flavonoid content was 24.827 ± 0.327 mgQE / g mgQE / g with an antioxidant capacity with an IC50 value of 54.166 ± 0.558 ppm. From the Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition test and lipase enzyme inhibition, the IC50 values ??were 33.843±0.157 ppm and 63.709±0.819 ppm, respectively. Based on these results, the pedada bark extract showed antihypertensive and antihyperlipidemic activity by inhibiting the activity of Angiotensin converting enzyme and lipase enzyme.
