Abstract

The ability to create contextual problems is essential for pre-service teachers. However, many teachers simply adapt or adopt existing problems when creating contextual problems. This study aims to explore the critical thinking skills in analysing contextual problems and the mathematical beliefs that underlie the analysis process. This qualitative study involved 40 pre-service primary school teacher participants, with four participants selected for in-depth interviews. The research instruments included vignettes, interview guidelines, and observation sheets. The data were validated using triangulation methods. The study indicates that pre-service primary school teachers can be categorised into non-critical thinkers (35 participants), emergent critical thinkers (3 participants), and advanced critical thinkers (2 participants). Non-critical thinkers demonstrate an ability to understand problems that they have previously studied, as their understanding constrained to the formulae and procedures demonstrated by their teachers. Emergent critical thinkers showed the ability to question the problem formulation and evaluate its contextual relevance, although their reasoning remained influenced by teacher authority. Advanced critical thinkers are characterised by a high level of critical thinking aptitude, often attributed to their perception of mathematics as a discipline rooted in logical reasoning.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential for dealing with various problems in life problems. However, many students still demonstrate low levels of these skills. This study aimed to develop a local wisdom-based ratio electronic student worksheet (E-Worksheet) designed based on critical thinking indicators and to examine its validity and practicality. The study adopted the Plomp development model, consisting of preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phases. The participants were seventh-grade students in Singosari District, involving a small group of 10 students and a large group of 24 students. The developed web-based E-Worksheet integrates local wisdom contexts, such as Singhasari cultural heritage, Kirab Tirta Amarta Sari, and Petirtaan Watugede, into ratio learning. The validation results showed an average score of 94. 44%, categorized as highly valid. The practicality results indicated scores of 89. 29% from teachers and 80. 12% from students, both categorized as highly practical. These findings indicate that the developed E-Worksheet is valid and practical for use in mathematics learning and systematically designed based on critical thinking indicators. It has the potential to support meaningful and contextual learning. Further research is recommended to examine its effectiveness in improving students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan komunikasi matematika tertulis dalam menyelesaikan masalah cerita pada materi lingkaran. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Penelitian dilaksanakan di kelas VIIA SMP PGRI 6 Malang yang berjumlah 28 siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah tes dan wawancara. Analisis data dilakukan berdasarkan hasil tes dan wawancara mengacu pada kriteria keterampilan komunikasi matematis dengan menggunakan 6 tingkat keterampilan komunikasi tertulis dalam menyelesaikan masalah cerita. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat keterampilan komunikasi tertulis siswa kelas VIII A materi circle berada pada kategori rendah, hal ini terlihat dari persentase masing-masing level yang ada untuk level 0 dan level 1. Dalam kategori sedang. ada untuk level 2 dan untuk level 3. Di kategori tinggi ada untuk level 4 dan untuk level 5. Kemudian diambil tiga persentase terbesar dari setiap kategori, antara lain untuk kategori rendah di level 0, kategori sedang di level 2 dan kategori tinggi di level 4. This study aims to describe the ability of written mathematical communication in solving story problems on circle material. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach to the type of descriptive research. The study was conducted in class VIIA SMP PGRI 6 Malang, with a total of 28 students. Data collection techniques used were tests and interviews. Data analysis was performed based on test results and interviews referring to the criteria of mathematical communication skills using 6 levels of written communication skills in solving story problems. The results showed that the level of written communication skills of students in class VIII A on the material circle was in the low category, this is evident from the percentage of each level that is there for level 0 and for level 1. In the medium category there is for level 2 and for level 3. In the high category there are for level 4 and for level 5. Then the three biggest percentages of each category are taken, among others for the low category at level 0, the medium category at level 2 and the high category at level 4.
