Abstract

This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine the role of YouTube in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among early childhood learners aged 3–8. Drawing upon 60 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 to 2025, the review analyzes how YouTube functions as a digital learning tool, the strategies employed in classroom and home settings, and the challenges that accompany its integration. Findings reveal that YouTube provides multimodal, engaging, and contextual input that significantly supports vocabulary recognition, retention, and recall. Songs, animated stories, and interactive videos were found to increase children’s motivation, stimulate cognitive processing, and create enjoyable learning experiences. Moreover, the review highlights the importance of scaffolding by teachers and parents, whose mediation maximizes the effectiveness of YouTube by providing explanation, repetition, and guided practice. Despite its potential, several challenges remain, including risks of distraction, excessive screen time, inappropriate content, and unequal digital access.

Abstract

This systematic literature review aims to synthesize previous research findings to see how is mind mapping can be effective in vocabulary learning. This systematic literature review was conducted on research articles related to the use of mind mapping in teaching and learning vocabulary, using various databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, Eric, and Research Gate databases to conduct the search. The search was conducted on national and international articles published in the last 5 years (2020-2024). Of the 206 articles found in the search, 7 articles were selected to be the subject of the systematic review based on keywords and their limitations. The PRISMA 2020 flowchart was used in the article selection process. The findings of this study, it was found that mind mapping has an effective impact on vocabulary learning because: (1). Mind mapping has an effect on short-term and long-term vocabulary memory, (2). Mind mapping can increase students' learning motivation, (3). Mind mapping increases the willingness to learn independently, (4). Mind mapping helps students to be able to use both their right and left brain, (5). Mind mapping increases students' willingness to communicate (WTC).

Abstract

Reading academic journals is an important part of academic life, especially for students. However, many students feel bored in reading academic journals, which can affect their academic performance. This study aims to find out the factors that influence students' boredom in reading academic journals, and to find out the strategies used by students in overcoming boredom in reading academic journals. The research method used a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. The participants in this study were four students majoring in English at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari. Data collection used interviews. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there are two factors that affect the boredom of students reading academic journals, namely internal factors and external factors, the first internal factor is 1) Lack of enthusiasm; 2) laziness; 3) motivation. The second factor, on the other hand, is external, and includes things 1) writing-related aspects, 2) vocabulary, 4) difficult-to-understand language, and 5) family. Students use various strategies to overcome boredom when reading academic journals, such as engaging in physical activities, clearing their minds, playing games, watching movies, finding a comfortable place to read, setting reading goals, reading simple texts, planning the right moment, listening to music.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how EFL students use self-directed learning to improve their listening skills on YouTube utilizing the aspects of self-management, self-monitoring & motivation. The participants in this study were four (4) EFL learners majoring in English at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari during the academic year 2023/2024 who utilized YouTube for self-learning. The researcher employed semi-structured interviews to acquire data for this study. Using YouTube to improve listening skills, the researcher created 20 questions on students' self-directed learning. The findings highlight students' success and progression in using the YouTube platform developing self-management skills which consists of goal management, learning methods, support, and outcomes. Self-directed learning using the YouTube platform, which incorporates self-monitoring, is critical for enhancing students' learning abilities. Cognitive and metacognitive methods, such as capturing information and summarizing knowledge, help them improve their understanding and skills. In addition, this study emphasizes the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in self-directed learning via YouTube. By gaining deeper insights into students' perceptions and experiences with YouTube for language learning, this study aims to provide valuable insights for educational practitioners to develop more effective and innovative teaching strategies.

Abstract

This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach involving three participants who are alumni of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, who have completed an international credit transfer (ICT) program at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST), Philippines, from August to December 2023. This research helps how to improve students' experiential skills in public speaking preparation and satisfaction. Findings show that public speaking helps to overcome fear, increase confidence, and deliver effective speeches. Effective preparation, including message formulation, material organization, presentation techniques, and audience consideration, plays an important role in reducing anxiety and improving speech quality. Ultimately, regular public speaking practice proves instrumental in fostering psychological resilience and language proficiency among students.

Abstract

This study explores the use of songs in self-directed learning (SDL) to enhance vocabulary acquisition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. While vocabulary acquisition is essential in language learning, there is limited research on how students independently use songs outside the classroom to improve their vocabulary. This qualitative case study examines the experiences of two students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari, focusing on their strategies, challenges, and perceived benefits of using songs for vocabulary development. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who had a strong interest and experience in using songs for language learning, ensuring relevant insights.Data were collected through in-depth interviews, where participants discussed their song selection process, vocabulary learning strategies, and the challenges they faced. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key themes, such as motivation, repetition, self-directed learning strategies, and challenges, including fast-paced lyrics and slang.The findings show that personal motivation plays a key role in song selection, with participants choosing songs that resonate emotionally and have clear lyrics. Repetition was vital for vocabulary retention, while self-directed strategies like looking up unfamiliar words online helped expand vocabulary. However, challenges such as fast-paced lyrics and slang required adaptations, such as slowing down songs or using supplementary resources.This study highlights the potential of songs as a tool in SDL for vocabulary acquisition, suggesting a balanced approach that integrates songs with other language learning methods. It provides practical insights for EFL educators considering the use of songs in language learning

Abstract

Students’s confidence in speaking English is a crucial factor in the language learning process, particularly for English as a foreign language (EFL) students. However, many students struggle to develo their confidence when contributing to their lack of confidence in speaking English. Using a qualitative approach with Miles and Huberman’s analytical method, data were collected through guideline-based interviews with four EFL students selected using purposive sampling. The findings indicated that low self-confidence among students is influenced by several factors, including mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and psychological and emotional states. These four factors are interconnected and collectively shape students’ perceptions of their speaking abilities. The findings highlight the need for greater attention to psychological aspects and the learning environment to support the development of students’ confidence in speaking English.

Abstract

Kurangnya pemahaman siswa terhadap dasar-dasar pengembangan web menjadi tantangan dalam meningkatkan literasi digital di lingkungan sekolah. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut, Program Sawala Mengajar diimplementasikan sebagai solusi untuk memperkenalkan konsep dasar pemrograman web kepada siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP), khususnya di salah satu SMP Kota Kendari. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan pemahaman konseptual dan keterampilan praktis siswa dalam pembuatan website sederhana. Metode pengabdian menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif melalui hands-on learning, diskusi interaktif, serta pendampingan langsung. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan secara bertahap, meliputi pengenalan HTML, CSS, dan dasar-dasar JavaScript yang kemudian diterapkan dalam praktik pembuatan halaman web sederhana. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam pemahaman siswa terhadap konsep dasar pemrograman web, meningkatnya motivasi belajar teknologi digital, serta kemampuan menghasilkan proyek web sederhana. Kesimpulannya, Program Sawala Mengajar terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan literasi digital siswa sekaligus memberikan keterampilan praktis yang relevan dengan kebutuhan abad 21.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah dengan mengimplementasikan model pembelajaran Reciprocal teaching pada pengajaran mata kuliah Basic Reading akan meningkatkan keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris pembelajar. Penelitian dikaji menggunakan desain penelitian Quasi Experiment sebagai penelitian awal atau preliminari untuk mendapatkan hasil mengenai pengaruh yang akan didapatkan dari model pembelajaran tersebut atau bahkan dikembangkan unttuk proses pengajaran mata kuliah Reading selanjutnya. Kemudian alasan yang mendasari pelaksanaan penelitian ini adalah pemahaman akan pentingnya menguasai keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Kendari khususnya bagi mereka yang baru saja memasuki dunia perkuliahan dan mungkin saja masih belum menguasai bahasa Inggris dengan baik. Selain itu, peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis atau metakognitif menjadi salah satu syarat yang harus dimiliki oleh mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, proses pendidikan mereka harus dibenahi sejak dini dengan memilihkan model pembelajaran yang tepat, salah satunya dengan mengimplementasikan Reciprocal teaching dalam pengajaran mata kuliah Basic Reading. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan Uji t digunakan untuk membandingkan (membedakan) apakah kedua data (variabel ) yakni nilai posttest dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol sama atau berbeda. Dan ditemukan thitung 3.928 > ttabel 1.671 dengan df=58 pada derajat signifikansi 0.05 sehingga disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan model pembelajaran Reciprocal teaching dapat meningkatkan keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris secara bertahap.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah mengubah pola komunikasi remaja, namun turut memicu peningkatan kasus cyberbullying yang berdampak negatif terhadap kesehatan mental dan kesejahteraan psikologis. Regulasi diri yang lemah menjadi salah satu faktor kerentanan remaja terhadap perilaku cyberbullying, baik sebagai pelaku maupun korban. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meninjau peran inovasi chatbot berbasis kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence) sebagai bentuk intervensi digital dalam memperkuat regulasi diri remaja guna mengatasi cyberbullying. Studi ini menggunakan metode studi literatur dengan menganalisis berbagai sumber ilmiah nasional dan internasional yang relevan, meliputi jurnal, artikel penelitian, dan publikasi ilmiah terkait chatbot, regulasi diri, dan cyberbullying pada remaja. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa chatbot memiliki potensi besar dalam mendukung proses pembelajaran sosial-emosional remaja. Melalui percakapan interaktif, chatbot dapat membantu remaja mengenali emosi, mengendalikan impuls, serta mengembangkan kemampuan reflektif dalam menghadapi tekanan sosial digital. Fitur adaptif dan umpan balik reflektif pada chatbot berfungsi sebagai media pendamping yang aman, personal, dan responsif untuk memperkuat kesadaran diri dan tanggung jawab digital. Inovasi chatbot tidak hanya berperan sebagai alat teknologi, tetapi juga sebagai sarana edukatif dan psikologis yang efektif dalam penguatan regulasi diri remaja. Chatbot dapat dijadikan strategi intervensi digital yang inovatif dalam upaya pencegahan dan penanganan cyberbullying di era modern.
