Abstract

Latar Belakang: Zea mays L. menjadi salah satu tanaman pangan utama dunia.

Abstract

Background: Multibacillary (MB) leprosy is characterised by a high bacillary burden and a tolerogenic immune profile. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a key immunoregulatory cytokine that may reflect bacillary load. Objective: To compare bacillary burden and IL-10 between MB patients and controls and to examine the correlation between the Bacterial Index (BI) and IL-10 among MB patients. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study included 68 participants (MB n=34; controls n=34). Categorical variables were analysed using Chi-square tests, and medians were used with Mann–Whitney U tests. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to assess the BI–IL-10 relationship in MB. Results: Age distribution was similar between groups (p=0.451), whereas occupation (p=0.040) and education (p=0.027) differed. BI was markedly higher in MB than in controls (median 2.5 [IQR 4] vs 0 [0]; p<0.001). IL-10 concentrations were also higher in MB (1.96 [4.03] pg/mL) than in controls (1.12 [1.94] pg/mL; p=0.029). Among MB patients, BI correlated positively with IL-10 (ρ = 0.358; p = 0.038). Conclusion: MB leprosy shows substantially greater bacillary burden and elevated IL-10 relative to controls. The positive association between BI and IL-10 supports the role of an immunoregulatory milieu linked to bacillary load. These findings highlight IL-10 as a potential biomarker for disease burden in MB leprosy and warrant validation in larger, adjusted cohorts.

Abstract

Stunting affects 149.2 million children globally, with Indonesia reporting a prevalence of 21.6%, despite a decline in trends. Urban-specific risk factors remain poorly characterized, which limits the development of effective intervention strategies for metropolitan areas. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with stunting in children aged 0 to 59 months in Jambi, Indonesia. This case-control study involved 108 children aged 0 to 59 months from five community health centers in Jambi City from December 2024 to January 2025. The cases (n = 54) were children with height-for-age z scores of less than 2 standard deviations (SD), and the controls (n = 54) had standard growth patterns. Data collection involved anthropometric measurements and structured maternal interviews, which were analyzed via chi-square tests with 95% confidence intervals. Low birth length had a very high odds ratio (OR = 45.69, 95% CI = 5.88 to 354.70; p < 0.001), whereas inadequate complementary feeding resulted in a perfect prediction (OR = 5.33, 95% CI = 3.20 to 8.88; p < 0.001). Incomplete immunization (OR = 37.81, 95% CI = 8.32 to 171.71; p < 0.001) and maternal educational deficit (OR = 6.53, 95% CI = 1.76 to 24.18; p = 0.002) were identified as the primary modifiable determinants. Multisectoral strategies targeting maternal nutrition, universal immunization, and education-based interventions are necessary to reduce stunting in Indonesia’s urban population sustainably.

Abstract

Stunting is a prolonged state of chronic malnutrition. This disorder is characterized by having a body length-for-age or body height-for-age measurement that falls below the -2 standard deviation established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The etiology of stunting is multifaceted, encompassing factors such as nutrition, feeding practices, infectious illnesses, and household income. Maternal understanding of nutrition, including dietary factors, is also associated with the occurrence of stunting. This study aimed to establish the relationship between feeding habits and maternal knowledge of nutrition with the prevalence of stunting in the operational region of the Gedongan Health Center, located in Mojokerto City. This study is an observational analytical study employing a cross-sectional design. The study’s population consisted of all women with children residing in the working area of the Gedongan Health Center. This study encompassed 144 participants who completed the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ) regarding eating practices and a questionnaire assessing maternal knowledge of nutrition. The objective was to examine the relationship between these factors to height and age. The chi-square test results indicate a statistically significant association between feeding practices and stunting (p = 0.0001) and maternal knowledge about nutrition and stunting (p = 0.0001). The survey revealed that most children had been provided with appropriate feeding patterns, and most moms had a commendable nutritional understanding. The study’s findings indicate a noteworthy relationship between feeding behaviors and mothers’ nutrition knowledge.

Abstract

Preeclampsia remains a primary driver of maternal mortality in Indonesia, highlighting the urgency of addressing maternal nutritional status as a critical, modifiable risk factor through targeted community programs. This community service aims to elevate pregnant women's literacy regarding balanced prenatal nutrition for preeclampsia prevention while mapping their baseline nutritional profiles and risk factors. The program integrated comprehensive health screenings (anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, and medical history assessments) with interactive video screenings and hands-on cooking demonstrations featuring local fish resources. Clinical screenings revealed a high prevalence of metabolic risks: 40% of participants were obese and 35% presented with anemia. A remarkably strong positive correlation was observed between BMI and MUAC (r=0.788; p<0.001). Post-intervention assessments demonstrated a substantial surge in nutritional knowledge, most notably regarding calcium requirements (131.6%) and protein needs (104.8%). Ultimately, combining visual education with experiential cooking workshops serves as an effective, highly practical strategy to improve maternal nutritional literacy and reinforce preeclampsia prevention frameworks at primary healthcare levels.
