Abstract

This study aimed to determine the challenges faced by Thai international students when they first came to Indonesia to study Indonesian as a foreign language. There were nine Thai students studying in six different cities in Indonesia were recruited as participants. The thematic analysis revealed two major themes: academic challenges and technological issues. Both made it difficult for Thai students to master the Indonesian language effectively. The condition potentially hinders their academic success when studying in Indonesia. However, the researchers found that despite the language barrier, Thai students still tried to speak Indonesian with Indonesian students and residents. It indicates that Thai students in this study were highly determined, friendly, and open to new cultures. Furthermore, the researchers advise teachers and program organizers to pay attention to these challenges to maximize the learning output.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the tendency of sentence error and it’s contributing factors in sentence errors of BIPA students' writings on academic level at UPT Bahasa of Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. This research uses qualitative research type in the form of case study. This study shows that the sentence errors of BIPA students' writings in UPT Bahasa UNS Surakarta are diction errors, spelling errors, and conjunction errors. The errors are caused by several obstacles, namely the more-likely hard and difficult Indonesian syntax material, the lack of vocabulary mastery, the less maximum out-of-class lesson time, the low learning motivation and attitude, and the less rigorous selection of BIPA students.

Abstract

Challenges in education during the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era demand the optimal utilization of digital technology. However, disparities in access and low competencies of educators and learners remain major obstacles. This study aims to develop a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model based on digital technology to improve students’ scientific writing skills in the Indonesian language course. The research method used is Research and Development (RD) with the ADDIE model, which includes needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests of scientific writing skills, in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and student motivation questionnaires. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis for interviews and observations, and paired t-test statistical analysis to examine the difference between pre-test and post-test scores quantitatively. The results show a significant improvement in students’ scientific writing ability, with an average pre-test score of 62.0 increasing to 79.1 in the post-test (p 0.05). Students also demonstrated high motivation and active involvement in the learning process, despite some technical challenges. This model is expected to be an effective alternative for integrating digital technology into Indonesian language learning in higher education institutions. Abstract

This research discusses the intertextual study of the novel Canting written by Arswendo Atmowiloto and another novel with the same title by Fissilmi Hamida. The basis for the intertext study is the life philosophical background differences and similarities possessed by the characters in the two novels. This research is descriptive qualitative research, and the object of research are all quotations related to the philosophical background of the characters in the novels. Data collection is carried out with content analysis. Data analysis techniques in this study were carried out in the following steps, (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) drawing conclusions. The results of the analysis show that there is a slight relationship between the novel by Arswendo Atmowiloto (as the hypogram) and the novel Canting by Fissilmi Hamida (as the transformation) when viewed from the life philosophical background of the characters. In this case, the philosophical background of the characters is based on the main foundations of the Javanese philosophy of life, namely (1) divinity conscious awareness and (2) conscious awareness of human existence which emphasizes human relationships with others. Thus, intertextually the novel by Fissilmi Hamida is a deviant transformation of its hypogram, the novel by Arswendo Atmowiloto.

Abstract

In global higher education, classroom interaction has become a central concern in understanding how language practices shape participation, authority, and learning effectiveness. Directive speech acts, as a key component of academic discourse, play a crucial role in managing interaction and facilitating instructional processes across diverse cultural and institutional settings. This study aims to examine the usage and functions of directive speech acts among students in an Islamic higher education learning environment. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research analyzed recorded classroom interactions involving 48 students from the Indonesian Language Tadris Study Program at Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin Sambas University (UNISSAS), West Kalimantan. Data were collected through classroom observation and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results identified 78 instances of directive speech acts classified into six functional categories: requests (26.92%), commands (23.08%), invitations (15.38%), prohibitions (14.10%), suggestions (11.54%), and advice (8.97%). Requests and commands emerged as the most dominant forms, reflecting the instructional orientation of classroom discourse and students’ efforts to ensure participation and mutual understanding. In conclusion, directive speech acts function not only as pragmatic tools but also as ethical communicative strategies in Islamic academic contexts. The study implies that strengthening pragmatic awareness in Islamic education can promote effective, respectful, and harmonious classroom communication aligned with Islamic values.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a case study approach. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out using passive participatory observation techniques, document analysis, interviews, and questionnaires. The data validity test technique uses the data source triangulation method. The results of the study found that the procedures carried out by the teacher in carrying out lesson planning were different from the suggestions given by the government. The teacher carries out the lesson plan with the stages of (a) analysis of learning outcomes that can be used to develop objectives and flow of learning objectives, (b) developing teaching modules, (c) adjusting learning outcomes to the stages of achievement and characteristics of students, (d) conducting learning evaluations and assessment. Second, the implementation of Indonesian language learning is not in accordance with the teaching modules that have been planned by the teacher starting from the learning activity steps, learning methods, learning media and assessment assessments that have been planned. Third, learning planning has obstacles in the process of adapting to the use of an independent curriculum, difficulties in using the Free Teaching Platform (PMM) application in understanding an independent curriculum, teachers have difficulty managing time, an independent curriculum assessment system, alignment of material in teaching modules, and completeness of student books. Then, there are obstacles in the implementation of learning, namely students are still adapting from distance learning to face-to-face learning and the teacher lacks control over the situation in class conditions.
