Abstract

Provision of teaching materials in term of module can be an alternative to meet the learning needs of science. The study aimed at describing science module constructed based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) equipped with valid and effective biotechnology games for learning science in junior high school. This Research and Development (R&D) was developed using the 4D model (Thiagarajan). This research was conducted at MTsN (State of Islamic Secondary School) 2 Jember, involved 30 IX graders. The design used was one group pretest-posttest design as the test of effectiveness. This study used STEAM-based science module equipped with biotechnology games, test, and validation sheets as research instruments. The validation results by experts were converted into categories. The effectivity test data was analyzed using N-gain and paired samples t-test. The average of validation results of material, media, and users was 87.17 (very valid). The effectivity test results showed the increase of students? cognitive learning outcome [N-gain value = 0.72 (high category), t(29) = 9.030, p < 0.05]. Therefore, the module developed is valid and effective in improving the learning of biotechnology science which means that the use of this module is recommended to be implemented in biotechnology learning process.

Abstract

The study aims to develop a valid, practical and effective Biology student’s book based on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) on the topic of biotechnology for Grade XII. The method applied for the study was research and development with the 4-D model. The subjects were 58 Grade XII students of SMAN 1 Muncar, Banyuwangi-Indonesia. The results showed that the average of validation result of STEM-based student’s book was 86.4% which fell under a strong valid category. The average percentage of legibility test and practicality were in very good category of 87.18% and 96.53%, respectively. Meanwhile, the average of effectiveness test was 0.77 of normalized gain categorized in high criteria. In conclusion, it could be determined that STEM-based student’s book of biotechnology is valid, pratical, and effectively used in learning process.

Abstract

Foodborne disease caused by Escherichia coli contamination is increasing every year. It also followed by elevating of drug-resistance of E. coli. Bacteriophage can be an alternative for therapy infection.  This study aimed to determine synergism effect of bacteriophage ϕPT1b which has a high rate virulence to E. coli and phage-antibiotics (tetracycline and amoxicillin) synergy. The indigenous bacteria isolates were KR, MJ, KP, PT, PR. Five bacteriophages used namely ϕKR1b, ϕKR2, ϕPT1a, ϕPT1b, and ϕMJ1b. Virulence test was used to determine the ability of each phage in reducing E. coli. Treatment to examine synergism of phage ϕPT1b and antibiotics were P1: amoxicillin, P2: ϕPT1b, P3: ϕPT1b + Amx = 1:1, P4 : ϕPT1b + Amx = 2:1, P5: ϕPT1b + Amx = 1:2, P6 : tetracycline, P2: ϕPT1b, P7: ϕPT1b + Tet = 1:1, P8 : ϕPT1b + Tet = 2:1, and P9: ϕPT1b + Tet = 1:2. The virulence test showed that isolate ϕPT1a with 106 CFU/ml had the highest ability in reducing E. coli. While, the result of synergism test indicated that the synergism of bacteriophage and antibiotics differ significantly (P ≤ 0.05). The best ratios of synergism were 1:1 (ϕPT1b+tetracycline) and 2:1 (ϕPT1b+amoxicilline). In summarize, phage-antibiotic synergy (ϕPT1b with tetracycline/amoxicilline) can reduce the level of antibiotic resistance in isolated E. coli.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that continuous to improve and develop its education system. The development of learners abilities that are needed nowadays not only develop cognitive ability alone will be much more than that, it needs an attitude awareness in the learning process. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of the problem-based learning model with mind mapping technique. Biological material used in this study is the subject of the virus. The first research result is learning the model of learning for student cognitive learning result. Based on the results of ANAKOVA analysis shows the significance level less than 0.05, then this shows the significant effect of the difference between the learning class and control class on the learning achievement of cognitive aspects. The second research result is to test the difference of learning the result of the affective domain between problem-based learning model with mind mapping technique and conventional learning model. The result of learning effective sphere which is assessed based on direct observation covering 5 indicators namely; Discipline, daring opinion, responsibility, cooperation and tolerance, Based on the analysis One sample t-test 2 indicator shows the level of significance less than 0.05, then this shows there are significant differences 2 indicators of effective learning achievement. 2 indicators are daring opinion and cooperation.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a Biology Science learning unit based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) that is valid, practical and effective in accessing students' system thinking skills. The topic ,of the Biology Science learning unit is the water cycle. The development used the ADDIE model research and development for the research method. The research subjects were 32 grade VII students from State Junior High School in Jember. The research findings showed that the average validation result of STEM-based learning units was 95.3%. These can be considered valid. The Paired Sample Test result is 0.001 or less than 0.05, so there is a significant difference between the pretest and post-test results. The average effectiveness test score is 0.73, higher than the typical gain test score, and the results include the high criteria. Finally, the average percentage of practicality tests is in the high category of 89%.  System thinking skills are needed in learning activities to describe and solve a problem using integrated STEM education. Therefore, the STEM-based learning unit on the water cycle topic could be applied in the learning process to acquire students' system thinking abilities in the Biology Science learning unit. Finally, assessing student responses during the learning using this learning unit is pivotal for future research.

Abstract

The use of prohibited food additives such as formalin is still often found, especially in the school environment. In fact, based on the 2012 Minister of Health Regulation No. 033, formalin is prohibited as a food additive. This phenomenon requires people to be quite observant in choosing food tools. In addition, many people think that the formalin content test can only be done through the laboratory, the formalin test can also be done by a simple reagent containing anthocyanin on dragon fruit skin. So, the researchers designed a simple STEAM-based media with a natural formaldehyde-detecting ingredient, namely red dragon fruit peel extract. This design is divided into two parts, namely the design of simple steam-based media and the manufacture of natural dragon fruit peel extract to detect the content of formaldehyde additives in food. The design was carried out by Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 6 Jember. The final tool produced is a detector marker.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the characteristics of STEM-based teaching materials and to find out the increase in scientific literacy skills of junior high school students. The method used in this research is research and development. The design of this study uses the ADDIE model, with the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The trial design used the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The test subjects were class VII SMP Walisongo Mayang. The characteristics of this integrated STEM-based textbook and local potential contain material on temperature and heat, complemented by student environmental events as well as practicum procedures and project creation related to STEM aspects for students. The results of the validity of the textbooks developed by the validator show very valid criteria, with the results of the feasibility test using a student response questionnaire showing textbooks included in the practical category and good for students. As well as the results of the effectiveness of textbooks show that they can improve students' scientific literacy skills which are marked by an increase in pretest to posttest scores (t-test value 25,668 and n-gain 0.77). Developing textbooks for students makes it possible to develop them more broadly with STEM development as well as the problems and challenges faced by students in the surrounding environment.
