Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of understanding and participation of third-grade students in the subject matter of prayer and worship in Christian Religious Education (PAK) at SD Negeri Hatalai. This research aims to improve the understanding of third-grade students at SD Negeri Hatalai regarding prayer and worship material in PAK lessons. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles of intervention. This classroom action research involved 10 students and was carried out in two cycles, with the consistent implementation of the DIRT method for 7–8 minutes at the beginning of each lesson. The DIRT method consists of four stages: heart preparation, worship & short scripture, intercessory prayer & commitment, and transition to the core material. Data were collected through comprehension tests, observations, and interviews. The results showed a significant increase in the students’ average comprehension scores, from 58 (41% mastery) in the pre-cycle to 81 (86% mastery) in the second cycle. In addition, there were positive behavioral changes, including increased active participation, more personal meaning in prayer, and respectful attitudes during worship. The main factors contributing to success were consistent implementation, contextualization of the material, and active student participation. These findings confirm that the DIRT method is effective in building spiritual foundations and Christian character from an early age. This study recommends the integration of reflective prayer and worship as a routine in PAK lessons at elementary schools and suggests further research in broader contexts to assess the sustainability and replicability of the DIRT model.

Abstract

Adolescent self-control is a critical developmental competency associated with academic achievement and positive social behavior. This study examines the effectiveness of group counseling with sociodrama technique in improving the self-control of Grade XI students at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed. The experimental group (n = 33) participated in structured sociodrama-based group counseling sessions, while the control group (n = 38) received no structured intervention. Self-control was measured using a validated Likert-scale instrument based on Averill's three-dimensional model (behavioral, cognitive, and decisional control). Data were analyzed using paired-sample and independent-sample t-tests at  alpha = 0.05. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group (t(32) = 24.456, p < 0.001; mean gain = 11.97 points), compared to a negligible gain in the control group (mean gain = 1.39 points). The between-group comparison was also significant (t(69) = 4.050, p < 0.001). These findings confirm that sociodrama-based group counseling is an effective, engaging, and evidence-based strategy for developing adolescent self-regulation in school settings.

Abstract

The study aims to examine the effect of students’ character on critical thinking skills and mathematics learning outcomes among first-grade elementary school students. The study aims to examine the effect of students' character particularly discilpine, responsibility, and independence on critical thinking skills and mathematichs learning outcomes among fisrt-grade elementary school students'. The research employed a quantitative approach using simple linear regression analysis. The sample consisted of 28 students. Character data were collected through a teacher-completed observation questionnaire, while critical thinking skills and mathematics learning outcomes were measured using written tests. Data were analyzed using regression assumption tests and hypothesis tests in SPSS. The results revealed that students’ character did not have a significant effect on critical thingking skills (Sig. =  0.991 > 0.05; R2 = 0.000). Substantively, the R2   value of 0.000 indicates that character variabels did not contribute to explaining the variance in students’ critical thinking skills. However, character had a positive and significant effect on mathematics learning outcomes (β = 0.195; Sig. = 0.010 < 0.05), accounting for 22.8% of the variance in learning outcomes. These findings indicate that character traits such as discipline, responsibility, and independence support academic achievement but do not directly influence critical thingking skills in early-grade students. Practically, teachers are encouraged to consistently integrate character reinforcement into daily mathematics instruction to improve learning outcomes, while simultaneously applying structured problem-based and reasoning-oriented activities to specifically stimulate students’ critical thinking skilss. This study suggests that character education and cognitive skill development should be implemented through complementary instructional strategies at the early elementary level.

Abstract

Students’ ability to solve inverse proportion problems remains low due to difficulties in understanding variable relationships, indicating differences in thinking processes related to cognitive styles and gender. This study aimed to analyze, compare, and evaluate students’ thinking processes in solving inverse proportion problems based on cognitive style and gender using an information-processing theoretical framework. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory design. The research subjects consisted of eight eighth-grade students selected purposively, representing Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive styles as well as male and female students. Data were collected through written mathematical problem-solving tests and in-depth interviews as the main research instruments. The data were analyzed using interactive qualitative data analysis. The findings revealed that differences in students’ thinking processes were more strongly influenced by cognitive style than by gender, in line with the primary objective of the study. FI students tended to apply systematic and analytical strategies, were able to filter relevant information, and independently verify their answers, whereas FD students relied more on intuitive strategies, required more time to understand the problems, and were more dependent on external context. Overall, this study concludes that cognitive style is a key factor in determining the quality of students’ mathematical thinking processes. The implications of this study highlight the importance of early identification of students’ cognitive styles and the development of adaptive instructional models.
