Abstract

Abstract. Oktavia D, Adnani QES, Gumilang L, Novianti E, Sunardi. 2023. Short Communication: Plants used by Sundanese mothers for maternal care in a rural village in Bandung District, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3568-3573. Traditional beliefs and plants are pivotal during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Little is known of Sundanese, a small ethnic group whose traditions and use of plants facilitate easier pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. This study aimed to determine the traditional beliefs and types of plants used by Sundanese mothers of Bandung District, West Java, Indonesia during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Individual interviews using structured questions were conducted to collect socio-demography data and gather information on traditional beliefs and the use of plants concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Purposive and snowball sampling was employed to enroll women of reproductive age who were either pregnant at the time of the study or had recently given birth and were postpartum. Data were collected from 119 Sundanese women. These women frequently used 25 different medicinal plant species from 21 families to treat various conditions that arise during pregnancy and childbirth. The Zingiberaceae plant family was observed to be the most commonly used, with leaves being the most frequently utilized plant part. Decoction and cooking were reported as the most favored remedy preparation. The most effective plants during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum were Cocos nucifera L., Cocos nucifera L., and Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr., respectively. Therefore, to promote sustainable women's health in rural areas, the current findings highlight the necessity for conservation efforts and further studies on the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of frequently used food and medicinal plants.

Abstract

Early marriage remains a major public health problem in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), particularly in rural areas where local cultural practices have received limited quantitative investigation despite their potential influence on marriage decisions. This study aimed to identify the determinants of early marriage among adolescents in rural West Kupang District. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design involving 98 adolescents aged 15–19 years from two villages (Oenaek and Sumlili) selected using the Slovin formula. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate (chi-square), and multivariate (multiple logistic regression) analyses. The prevalence of early marriage was 27.6%. Bivariate analysis identified six factors significantly associated with early marriage (p < 0.05), while multivariate analysis showed that local cultural/customary perceptions (AOR = 6.1; 95% CI: 1.9–19.6; p = 0.002), poor reproductive health knowledge (AOR = 3.2; p = 0.036), and poor family economic status (AOR = 2.9; p = 0.049) were the dominant determinants. The novelty of this study lies in quantitatively examining the role of local cultural perceptions, including the belis tradition, together with socioeconomic and behavioral factors in a rural NTT setting. These findings provide evidence to support culturally sensitive policies, strengthen adolescent reproductive health education, and guide community-based interventions to prevent early marriage in rural areas.

Abstract

Pregnancy-related anemia remains a significant public health problem in the working area of Puskesmas Hajimena, Natar Subdistrict, South Lampung, increasing the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Although iron (Fe) supplementation is routinely provided through antenatal care (ANC), anemia remains prevalent, suggesting that supplementation alone may be insufficient to address nutritional and behavioral factors affecting maternal hemoglobin (Hb) levels. This study addressed limited evidence regarding the integration of Health Belief Model (HBM)-based nutrition counseling with Fe supplementation in primary healthcare settings. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study with a control group involved 98 second-trimester pregnant women equally allocated into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received three HBM-based nutrition counseling sessions over eight weeks alongside Fe tablets, while the control group received Fe tablets alone. The intervention significantly increased Hb levels and reduced anemia prevalence. The novelty lies in integrating behavioral-based nutrition counseling into anemia prevention. Scientifically, the findings provide evidence that behavioral interventions can enhance Fe supplementation effectiveness. Practically and clinically, the intervention offers a feasible strategy for midwives to improve maternal knowledge, adherence, dietary practices, and anemia management within ANC services. From a policy perspective, the findings support integrating structured nutrition counseling into routine maternal health programs to strengthen anemia prevention and improve maternal health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Many studies have examined the impact of empowerment on maternal health outcomes, yet few have addressed the specific contexts through which empowerment influences health outcomes. This study aimed to explore the contexts in which empowerment affects maternal health status.Method: This literature review used studies from PubMed and Semantic Scholar databases. Articles were included if published within the last five years and provided free full-text access. Exclusion criteria included studies deemed irrelevant. All included articles were thoroughly reviewed. A total of 13 articles were identified and reviewed.Result: The findings revealed that women's empowerment influences maternal health through various pathways. Financial empowerment, including control over household expenditures and access to income, along with social empowerment—characterized by mobility, decision-making autonomy, access to communication tools, and rejection of spousal violence—was associated with increased antenatal care (ANC) visits, greater utilization of skilled birth attendants (SBAs), and a higher likelihood of delivering in healthcare facilities. In turn, it impacts maternal health status, as they are associated with reduced risk of complications. Furthermore, cultural and structural barriers, such as patriarchal norms and gender-based restrictions, were identified as challenges to empowerment.

Abstract

Background: Anaemia is a major global health issue. Anaemia in adolescents has substantial dangers and is primarily caused by a lack of iron, which is strongly associated with the seriousness of the disorder. In addition, adolescent females who have anaemia are prone to acquiring anaemia during pregnancy. These factors can influence the growth and development of the fetus in the womb and increase the chances of complications during pregnancy and labour. Indonesia still grapples with several unresolved nutritional problems, with a specific focus on the high occurrence of anaemia among youths. Integrating nutrition education is a successful approach to reducing the prevalence of anaemia. Purpose: To provide a thorough analysis of the impact of nutrition education media on anaemia, particularly in improving anaemia knowledge among adolescent females. Method: A literature review study involves the systematic retrieval of pertinent scholarly papers from databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and WorldCat. The data was collected from scholarly publications published between 2018 and 2024, with a particular focus on Indonesian and English articles that are fully accessible. Results: Indicated that the use of educational media on nutrition to address anaemia had a substantial effect on increasing awareness of anaemia among adolescent females. Nutrition education can be delivered through nutrition Conclusion: Counselling, as well as using diverse media platforms like Healthy Millennial Cards, books, leaflets, posters, comics, flipcharts, motion videos, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Furthermore, it can be disseminated through pedagogical approaches such as gamification, Team Game Tournaments (TGT), and peer group instruction. Suggestion: To enhance the efficacy of research on the prevention of anaemia among adolescents, it is advisable to employ a wider range of research methodologies, conduct studies over an extended period, engage communities and families, conduct a more thorough analysis of influencing factors, utilize advanced educational technologies, and assess the impact of health policies.
