Abstract

Fungi from South Sumatra (Indonesia) were identified morphologically and molecularly, and their pathogenicity to egg, larvae, and adult Aedes aegypti was evaluated. The fungal isolates used for bioassay were 11 isolates from this study and 4 isolates from the laboratory collection. Fifteen isolates of five fungal species (Metarhizium anisopliae, Penicillium citrinum, Talaromyces diversus, Beauveria bassiana, and Purpureocillium lilacinum) from South Sumatra, Indonesia, were pathogenic to the egg, larvae, and adult of Ae. aegypti. Egg mortality caused by M. anisopliae isolate MSwTp3 was the highest (38.31%). A novel finding of this study was that the eggs exposed to the fungus not only killed the eggs but could continue to kill the emerging larvae, pupae, and adults. The five fungal species induced larval mortality between 52.22−94.44% and adult mortality between 50.00−92.22%. Fungal strains belonging to M. anisopliae, P. citrinum, T. diversus, and B. bassiana from South Sumatra seem to possess remarkable ovicidal, larvicidal and adulticidal activity against Ae. aegypti. M. anisopliae, P. citrinum, T. diversus, and B. bassiana had the potential as entomopathogens to be developed into ovicides, larvicides, and adulticides for controlling Ae. aegypti.

Abstract

Clean water reservoirs can become mosquito breeding grounds because water comes from rainwater, water wells, and taps, making them an ideal breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector of the dengue virus. This study aims to determine the hatchability of eggs and the growth of Aedes aegypti in three different types of brooding water in Sako Village, Palembang City. This study is experimental. The sample contains 1200 Aedes aegypti eggs collected from the Health Research and Development Center (Balitbangkes), the Ministry of Health of Indonesia in Baturaja, as well as three types of water collected from the homes of residents suffering from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Sako Village, Sako District, Palembang City. Data was collected through direct observation for 5 days of egg hatching in the third water, which was repeated three times. The study's results were analyzed by the ANOVA, Honest Significant Difference test (BNJ), and R studio software version 4.1.2. The average number of mosquito eggs that hatched in well water was 77.67%, rainwater was 63,335, tap water was 54.67%, and control was 72.33%. There were significant differences in the effects of the three types of air on the larval and pupal stages of Aedes aegypti development. This study shows that Aedes aegypti mosquitos can breed into adults outside of clean water and water that contains soil, such as water wells. Abstract

Superficial dermatomycosis is the most common type of infection, which affects 20-25% of the world's population. Tinea pedis can cause onychomycosis and has been associated with onychomycosis in 30 to 50% of cases. The study aimed to determine the relationship between Tinea pedis and the occurrence of onychomycosis in scavengers. The research design used in this study is cross-sectional. The sample used was scavengers at the Sukawinatan landfill in Palembang. The sampling method used a consecutive sampling technique for as many as 70 respondents. This study used data obtained from interviews and examination of skin scrapings under a microscope and fungal culture. The results obtained were 31 respondents (44.3%) with tinea pedis and 39 respondents (55.7%) who did not have tinea pedis. Fifty-five respondents (78.5%) had onychomycosis, while 15 (21%) did not. Tinea pedis and onychomycosis are strongly related. The Odds Ratio (95%=CI) of the Chi-Square test was 0.309. Tinea pedis is 0.309 times more likely to have onychomycosis. In conclusion, there was a significant relationship between tinea pedis and the occurrence of onychomycosis in the disposal officer. The emergence of tinea pedis is due to the daily life of scavengers who live side by side with garbage and the lack of concern for personal hygiene which is not optimal, can be prevented and treated.

Abstract

Tittle:  Improving Household Food Security Based on Local Food “Clams” (Corbicula Sp): A Case Study in Palembang CityPopulations residing along the Musi River in Palembang City rely on fisheries as their primary source of income, but still face relatively high rates of poverty and stunting prevalence, reaching 10.48% (BPS, 2023) and 14.3% (SSGI, 2023), respectively. An effort to reduce the prevalence of stunting is possibly accomplished through increasing the consumption of protein-rich diets. To surmount this difficulty, food sustainability can be improved by increasing the consumption of shellfish as a source of protein. The study employs three methods: literature reviews, surveys, and in-depth interviews. The data was collected through in-depth interviews with 15 people from Kampung Remis, Kelurahan 5 Ulu, Palembang City, South Sumatra, in December 2022. The informants consisted of fishermen, vendors, and members of the community who were purposefully sampled based on age, gender, primary occupation, and level of education; the data was then qualitatively analysed and presented descriptively. Remis as a source of protein for household fishing has several advantages, including simple availability, commercially viable and environmentally friendly cultivation development potential, and high adaptability. Some social, economic, and policy challenges are knowledge and public awareness, price and accessibility, regulations and policies monitoring quality, and food security. Overcoming these challenges will require collaboration between governments, the public, the private sector, and related stakeholders.
