Abstract

The narrative of the 1945 independence struggle in history textbooks plays a crucial role in shaping students’ understanding of national identity. However, its presentation does not always reflect the diversity of historical perspectives or meet the demands of critical learning. This study aims to analyze the construction of the 1945 independence narrative in high school history textbooks under the Merdeka Curriculum. The study employs a qualitative approach using a three-dimensional critical discourse analysis framework encompassing textual analysis, social context, and the underlying perspectives of the narrative. Data were drawn from two history textbooks for Grades 11 and 12 published by the Ministry of Education. The units of analysis included narrative texts, illustrations, learning activities, and assessment questions related to the theme of independence. The results indicate that the narrative is predominantly shaped by a nationalist perspective that emphasizes the role of elite figures, while the contributions of other groups are only partially represented. Furthermore, most assessment questions remain focused on factual recall and do not sufficiently promote critical thinking skills. These findings reveal a gap between the intended curriculum and the actual presentation of material in textbooks. Therefore, the development of more inclusive, analytical, and contextualized historical narratives is necessary to support critical history learning.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of traditional marriage and identify the social values embedded within it among the Sasak Bayan community of Sukadana Village, Bayan District, North Lombok Regency. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed, with data obtained through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with customary leaders and community members, and documentation, then analyzed following the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with credibility ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that traditional marriage in Sukadana Village unfolds through six interrelated stages, namely memulang, mejati, nyelabar, ajikrama, mengkawin/merosok, and tampah wirang, each governed by customary norms emphasizing mutual consent, deliberation, and reconciliation. Analysis based on Notonegoro's classification of social values reveals that the tradition contains material values (the use of customary goods, expenditure, and communal consumption), vital values (mutual cooperation, the role of customary leaders, and customary regulation), and religious values (the practice of religious rituals and communal belief). These findings indicate that the memulang tradition, often misread as an act of elopement, is in fact a structured customary mechanism built on agreement, social responsibility, and communal solidarity, so that its preservation requires deliberate documentation and cross-generational transmission of local wisdom.

The Bekelewang Tradition in Shaping Civic Culture among the Community of Kemuning Village, Sekongkang District Abstract This study aims to describe the implementation of the Bekelewang Tradition, identify the Civic Culture values embedded within it, and analyze its role in shaping Civic Culture among the people of Kemuning Village, Sekongkang District. This research employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic research design. The research participants consisted of 6 informants selected purposively, including 2 traditional leaders, 2 community leaders, and 2 youth who understand and are directly involved in the Bekelewang Tradition. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while the validity of the data was ensured through technique, source, and time triangulation. The findings reveal that the Bekelewang Tradition is implemented through three stages: preparation (Besemula, Urun Rembuk, Berajak and Rebaya, committee formation, and Antat Panulung), implementation (Masak Berema, Mangan Berema, and communal prayer), and closing (site cleaning and activity completion), all of which involve active participation from the entire community. The Civic Culture values reflected in this tradition include social trust, social responsibility, and cooperation. The Bekelewang Tradition contributes to the development of Civic Culture through deliberation, mutual cooperation, role distribution, adherence to collective agreements, and community coordination. These practices strengthen social cohesion, solidarity, and citizens' participation in community life. Therefore, the Bekelewang Tradition functions not only as a form of local cultural heritage but also as a medium for fostering civic character and promoting participatory, responsible, and socially cohesive citizens.
