Abstract

Abstract

The distillation column is one of the vital components in the biodiesel industry equipment, functioning to separate biodiesel compounds from other compounds such as glycerin and residual methanol. This research aims to analyze future predictions of distillation column prices based on the specified equipment specifications. This type of research is quantitative research with a descriptive approach. The type of research used in this study is quantitative descriptive research with a case study approach and technical simulation. In this study, the methodology used to estimate distillation equipment costs in biodiesel production involves a comprehensive two-stage approach: Equipment specifications are determined based on production capacity, and then price estimates are carried out using the Peters & Timmerhaus formula. In this research, the sample used is technical and economic data related to distillation column design in the biodiesel industry. The calculation data is compared with actual prices on the market to validate the accuracy of the method. The data analysis technique used is economic engineering estimation calculations accompanied by empirical comparisons. The research results show that increasing production capacity requires larger distillation column specifications, such as tower diameter, tower height, and number of holes in the tray, and more complex supporting accessories to support optimal performance. Price comparison shows that the estimation method using the Peters & Timmerhaus formula produces fairly accurate predictions of current market prices. These findings imply that this method can be used as an adequate approach to planning the procurement of distillation columns in the biodiesel industry more efficiently. The implications of this research show that optimal distillation column design not only increases the efficiency of the biodiesel purification process but also significantly reduces operational costs and initial investment. From a technical perspective, proper design can increase product purity, reduce energy consumption, and extend equipment life, ultimately improving overall plant performance.

Abstract

The utilization of gadung tubers as an alternative food has limitations due to the presence of cyanide content, which can cause poisoning. The cyanide content is cyanogenic glycosides, which can be enzymatically hydrolyzed to form cyanide acid compounds (HCN). The cyanide content in gadung tubers averages around 362 ppm, while the safe limit for consumption of cyanide acid levels is ≤ 10 ppm. This study aims to reduce the cyanide acid content in gadung tubers through a maceration extraction process with a combination of Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl) solvents so that it complies with the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Gadung tuber extract was obtained from maceration extraction for 30 minutes in each solvent. Testing methods for cyanide acid in Gadung tubers include Titrimetry, Spectrophotometry, and Organoleptic. The combination of high concentrations of Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl) can help reduce cyanide acid levels in gadung tubers. The initial cyanide acid level of 47.02 mg/kg can be reduced with the best concentration combination (10:15)%, where the analysis results in titrimetry amounted to 9 mg/kg, while in spectrophotometry it was 9.5 mg/kg. This shows that cyanide acid levels can be reduced by 80-81% so that these levels meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

Abstract

The majority of the residents of Giripurno Village rely on activities in the agricultural and plantation sectors. One of the plantation commodities with high prospects in the area is mustard greens. Until now, the harvested mustard greens from local plantations have generally been marketed in fresh form without undergoing any processing. However, this commodity has the potential to generate various processed products with higher economic value if handled appropriately. One form of processing that can be carried out is converting mustard greens into flour. Therefore, this study focuses on the design of a simple drying device (food dehydrator) and the mass balance analysis in the mustard flour production process. This research was conducted using literature review, the design of a box-type insulated dryer equipped with incandescent lamp heating elements and a temperature control system, and the mass balance analysis of mustard flour production. Based on the analysis of the first experiment, 12 grams of mustard flour were obtained from 150 grams of fresh mustard greens. In the second experiment, 15 grams of mustard flour were obtained from 175 grams of fresh mustard greens.

Abstract

Area mapping is used to find out the potential that can be explored in an area. Geographically, Glagah District is located in the area of Lamongan Regency which is located in the northern hemisphere, approximately 15 Km from the capital of Lamongan district, located at coordinates between 06° 53' 30.81'' – 7° 23'6'' South Latitude and 112° 17' 01.22'' – 112° 33'12''. Glagah District has an area of 3,888 ha of agricultural land and makes agricultural products in this area quite large. Grain production in Glagah sub-district was 29,104 tons and 18,623.29 tons of rice production in 2019. The large amount of grain obtained makes the potential for processing rice husk waste a thing that needs to be considered. One way to process rice husks is by converting rice husks into burnt charcoal, considering that the silica content in rice husk ash is quite large at 87-97% of dry weight. This method is fairly easy to do and burnt husk charcoal can be used for organic fertilizer that is beneficial for plants.

Abstract

Glagah District, located in Lamongan Regency, has a lot of potential that can still be optimized, one of which is fish processing. This area produces popular fish on the market and only becomes waste if not processed, such as small fish, fish with too many spines, and fish heads. This is the main concern in processing unsold fish as one of the main raw materials in the production of fish meal. Mapping fish processing sources aims to build and maximize fish production potential. The method used is a descriptive and qualitative method with a field survey to obtain an overview of the distribution points of fish processing sources. From the results of field surveys and mapping carried out, there are 196.2456 hectares, including swamps, rivers and reservoirs, with a production scale of around 125.4635 tons. Meanwhile, the results of aquaculture include fish ponds, rice fields, ponds, floating-net-cages, and step-net-cages, which cover an area of around 4,179.48 hectares with a production scale of 12,915.9608 tons. The use of fish includes flour, pellets, crackers, presto, and fish cake, which can add selling value. This can also be a way to reduce fish and increase the village's income.

Abstract

Activated carbon is an adsorbent commonly used in adsorption methods for waste treatment due to its high adsorption capacity and simple preparation. Nevertheless, activated carbon also has limitations, such as low adsorption efficiency, which necessitates the use of supporting materials to resolve these weaknesses. TiO₂ a semiconductor material used in photocatalysis for waste treatment, has the advantage of reducing contaminants through decomposition processes. Nevertheless, TiO₂ also has disadvantages, such as a low adsorption capacity and a tendency to agglomerate. To resolve the limitations of both activated carbon and TiO₂, a method of combining these materials is employed. The addition of TiO₂ to activated carbon through sonication disperses TiO₂ particles on the surface of the activated carbon particles, filling the pores inside the activated carbon structure and creating additional micro and mesopores. This process enhances the porosity and surface area of the activated carbon. This study is intended to determine the effect of TiO₂  addition ratio and HCl activator concentration on the quality of the activated carbon. The research methodology involves activating the carbon with HCl and addition of  TiO₂  in specific ratios through sonication. The best results were obtained with a treatment using 1 M HCl concentration and  5% TiO₂ addition ratio, which resulted in activated carbon with a surface area of 4257 m²/g. The addition of TiO₂ to HCl-activated carbon significantly increases the surface area compared to activated carbon without TiO₂.
