Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest palm oil-producing countries in the world, significantly contributing to global palm oil needs. The use of palm oil as fuel is generally achieved through the biodiesel manufacturing process; however, this process remains costly and thus less economical. Additionally, the primary obstacle in using crude palm oil (CPO) is its high viscosity, which can cause blockages in the fuel injector channels of diesel engines. Therefore, modifications are necessary to enhance the characteristics of CPO so that it can be used directly as diesel engine fuel. This can be achieved through heating and the addition of 2-EHN additives. This study aimed to optimize the characteristics of CPO using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the optimal combination of temperature and 2-EHN concentration. The optimal point was identified at a temperature of 50°C and a 2-EHN concentration of 2%. The results of the CPO characteristic test showed a viscosity of 4.45 CSt, a density of 0.884 g/ml, a cetane number of 56.9, and a calorific value of 9314 kcal/kg

Abstract

Indonesia has committed to climate change mitigation through a sustainable energy transition. Currently, the share of renewable energy in Indonesia’s energy mix only reaches 12 %. One type of renewable energy that the Indonesian government is focusing on is biofuel to reduce consumption and dependence on fossil fuels. Bio-oil produced through pyrolysis has the potential to be used as a biofuel. The chosen pyrolysis process is Co-Pyrolysis, which involves two or more feedstocks. In this study, the process was carried out using waste cooking oil (WCO) and HDPE waste as feedstocks. The process was conducted at 450°C for 30 minutes, with varying masses of both feedstocks. The data obtained were analyzed using mass balance and yield analysis to determine the optimal conditions for producing bio-oil as a hydrocarbon fuel. The optimal condition was found at a mass ratio of HDPE: WCO = 1:4, with a bio-oil yield of 78%. Under these optimal conditions, the conversion of HDPE plastic into heptadecane was 29.39%, and the conversion of oleic acid in waste cooking oil into heptadecane was 38.8%. This also serves as an initial step toward developing a pilot plant-scale process using HDPE plastic waste and waste cooking oil.

Abstract

Industrialization and population growth in Indonesia have led to a decline in environmental quality. The increasing activities of industries such as textiles, metal plating, mining, and pharmaceuticals have also generated large amounts of hazardous organic and inorganic wastewater. Adsorption has become a preferred method for treating such waste, particularly through the use of zeolite materials modified with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) to enhance efficiency and ease of separation. The Fe₃O₄/zeolite material exhibits high adsorption capacity toward various pollutants, making it a potential adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment. This review aims to examine the potential of Fe₃O₄/zeolite as an adsorbent through a literature study by collecting and analyzing secondary data from various scientific publications. The selected literature was analyzed to compare synthesis methods, operating conditions, and adsorption efficiencies in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the performance and adsorption mechanism of Fe₃O₄/zeolite. Based on the review, Fe₃O₄/zeolite demonstrates good adsorption efficiency, with recorded values ranging from 42% to 99%.

Abstract

The majority of the residents of Giripurno Village rely on activities in the agricultural and plantation sectors. One of the plantation commodities with high prospects in the area is mustard greens. Until now, the harvested mustard greens from local plantations have generally been marketed in fresh form without undergoing any processing. However, this commodity has the potential to generate various processed products with higher economic value if handled appropriately. One form of processing that can be carried out is converting mustard greens into flour. Therefore, this study focuses on the design of a simple drying device (food dehydrator) and the mass balance analysis in the mustard flour production process. This research was conducted using literature review, the design of a box-type insulated dryer equipped with incandescent lamp heating elements and a temperature control system, and the mass balance analysis of mustard flour production. Based on the analysis of the first experiment, 12 grams of mustard flour were obtained from 150 grams of fresh mustard greens. In the second experiment, 15 grams of mustard flour were obtained from 175 grams of fresh mustard greens.

Abstract

Dependence on dwindling fossil fuels drives the development of biodiesel as a renewable alternative energy. However, the use of homogeneous catalysts, which are difficult to separate, non-reusable, and generate waste, remains a major obstacle. This review aims to examine the potential of dolomite-based heterogeneous catalysts (CaO–MgO) as a more sustainable solution. These catalysts are synthesized through the calcination of dolomite, an abundant carbonate mineral with main components of CaCO₃ and MgCO₃, and can be modified by adding Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, SiO₂, or Na doping to enhance catalytic activity, surface area, and bifunctional properties. Various vegetable oil feedstocks such as Crude Palm Oil (CPO), used cooking oil, tamanu oil, and canola oil have been successfully converted into biodiesel via transesterification (and simultaneous esterification-transesterification) using these catalysts, yielding biodiesel >90% with quality that meets national and international standards. Thus, the synthesis of CaO–MgO catalysts from dolomite promises an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly application for large-scale biodiesel production.

Abstract

Bocek Village, located in Karangploso District, Malang Regency, is one of the villages known for its chili production. However, the production of chili plants in this village is often affected by diseases caused by pests such as the fungus Colletotrichum spp., which will cause anthracnose (Patek) disease. This disease can cause defects in chili, reducing the quality of chili production. The farmers have handled the handling by using chemical pesticides, which are considered less effective and harm the environment. One solution that can be used is to use extracts from the citronella to be used as organic pesticides. This community service activity aims to introduce organic pesticides with citronella oil as raw material to the Tri Rejeki farmers group in Bocek Village. The socialization activity was carried out using the lecture method with the material covering the introduction of pesticides, the difference between chemical and organic pesticides, extraction of essential oils with a simple method, and the production process of organic pesticides with citronella oil. An evaluation of the participants was also carried out through a questionnaire given before and after the socialization. After the socialization was conducted, participants understood more about organic pesticides and how to produce them
