Abstract

This study examines heritage language maintenance, cultural identity formation, and language attitudes within the Tamil community in Medan, Indonesia. Employing ethnolinguistic identity theory and family language policy perspectives, it investigates factors influencing Tamil language transmission and its impact on ethnic identity. Surveys of 10 Tamil families reveal significant generational differences in attitudes towards Tamil maintenance. While 85% of parents view it as crucial for cultural preservation, only 50% of children share this sentiment, prioritizing societal assimilation. Both groups recognize the value of bilingualism and the cultural disconnection stemming from limited Tamil proficiency. Challenges including discrimination, insufficient community support, and inadequate resources hinder intergenerational language transmission. This study offers unique insights into the complex dynamics shaping heritage language maintenance in diasporic communities, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to support linguistic and cultural continuity.

Abstract

The proliferation of the English language has resulted in the blending of the English language and culture into the national and indigenous languages of emerging countries, including Indonesia. Although most people in North Aceh, Indonesia, are Acehnese, some restaurants and coffee shops are named in English. This study explores how English acculturation in the naming of food and coffee shops affects the visibility and preservation of local languages in this area. Using Berrys acculturation framework, the research categorizes naming practices into assimilation, integration, and isolation, analyzing how English, Indonesian, and Acehnese elements are blended or separated in commercial branding. Data were gathered through interviews with business owners and customers, as well as observations of shop names and menus. The findings reveal that assimilation is the most dominant strategy, reflecting a preference for English-language branding as a symbol of modernity and prestige, particularly among younger entrepreneurs. However, some businesses still adopt integrated or local naming conventions to retain cultural identity. These practices have sociolinguistic implications, as the increased dominance of English may marginalize the Acehnese language in public spaces. The study calls for culturally responsive language planning to ensure a balance between global appeal and local heritage in commercial language use.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of social values embedded within the Markobar tradition language used in Mandailing wedding customs. Markobar, a linguistic and cultural expression, plays a significant role in the social interactions and ceremonial discourse of Mandailing weddings. The research adopts a semiotics approach by Rholand Barthes, analyzing the structural and symbolic elements of the language to identify and interpret the underlying social values. Key findings reveal that the language reflects principles such as mutual respect, kinship solidarity, and communal harmony, emphasizing the pivotal role of language as a medium for sustaining cultural identity. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how linguistic practices preserve and propagate social values in traditional cultural settings.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the semiotic meaning of traditional devices in the ‘marpege-pege’ tradition in the Padangsidimpuan Batak Angkola. The method used in this research is the ethnographic method as determined by Spradley. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with elements of society and “suhut” the elements or parties holding the event. The data analysis method used is de Sausure analysis (1859) by interpreting two dichotomies: signifier and signified. The results of his research show that there are 6 traditional devices that support the traditional “marpege-pege” procession. The semiotic meanings contained in the 6 traditional devices are “amak lappisan” which means a special seat, namely an entity that has a high position, “pinggan godang” and “haronduk” which means a respect, “Sipulut” (sticky rice) and “inti” (coconut mixed with brown sugar) which means to tighten. The relationship between the entities in the “marpege-pege” tradition, “Burangir” (betel), “soda”, “pining” (betel nuts) and “gambir” means a form of gratitude, “timbako” (tobacco) or (cigarette) has the meaning as a form of appreciation for community leaders who have present at traditional processions and “Abit” (cloth) has a simple meaning.

Abstract

"Kuah Pliek" is the famous Acehnese cuisine that utilizes most ecological materials. However, only a few researchers have discussed the sustainability of the lexicon contained within the cuisine from an eco-linguistics perspective. This study focuses on Aceh's traditional cuisine, "Kuah Pliek U" (KPU), to assess the raw materials' eco-lexicon diversity and the Acehnese's knowledge of the identified eco-lexicon. This study employed a qualitative research design to address the problems in which data collection included in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), passive and active observation, and the examination of documents such as research reports and journal articles. The analysis of data then used a qualitative interactive model. The result demonstrates that the number of the eco-lexicon within KPU is about 35 – 40, as same as its total of raw materials and ingredients. It consists of biotic and abiotic, with plants comprising the majority. Linguistically, the lexicon belongs to the noun class, but semantically, it can be divided into nouns, prepositional eco-lexicons, and nouns and conjunction. This study also reveals that Acehnese knowledge of KPU has decreased, despite its continued popularity in Aceh society. It means that the existence of three dimensions that influence language sustainability cannot guarantee that local people's cultural knowledge will remain intact.

Abstract

This study aims to interpret the signs of semiotics in the videogame The Last of Us Part II (TLOU Part II) which reflect the values of female masculinity initiated by Judith Halberstam (1998). Through Roland Barthes' (1977) semiotics theory, this study analyzes the denotative and connotative meanings of visual and verbal signs from the characters of the videogame TLOU Part II. The source of this research data comes from screenshots of the videogame walkthrough which is then focused into 12 data for qualitative descriptive analysis. The 12 data were analyzed for their denotative and connotative meanings, then followed by description of the female masculinity category initiated by Judith Halberstam. From this study it was found that the 2 characters studied, namely Ellie and Abby, each fulfill several of the 5 categories of female masculinity initiated by Judith Halberstam, namely Butch Realness, Femme Pretender, Male Mimicry, Fag Drag, and Denaturalized Masculinity through visual and verbal signs from video games. They each show the appearance, gesture, nature, culture, and ideology of female masculinity
