Abstract

Advertisement plays an important role in the progression and development of a public company or an individual agency. The performance of an advertisement cannot be separated from the elements inside. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between image (visual elements) and text (linguistic elements) in a context. This research analyzed the multimodal aspect of Lazada's online advertisement. The data was obtained from the internet by accessing the legal website of Lazada and selecting one image as the sample. The method used in the research was a qualitative method that focused on descriptive and interpretative analysis. Generic Structure Potential (GSP) proposed by Cheong (2004) was applied to reveal visual and linguistic elements. Meanwhile, Halliday’s transitivity was applied to analyze types of processes in order to show how those elements represented the message conveyed. The research results showed that the visual elements on Lazada online advertisement were Lead, Emblem, and Display. Meanwhile, the linguistic elements were Announcement, Emblem, Call-and-visit-information, Enhancer, and Tag. Moreover, both elements were interconnected, in which attractive visual and linguistic elements directly affect the quality of the advertisement performed.

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates the pervasive phenomenon of online hate speech targeting transgender celebrities across Indonesian and International social media platforms. Focusing on experiences of Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner, the study aims to bridge a critical gap in understanding how cultural contexts shape the prevalence and nature of online harassment directed at transgender public figures. Through a comparative analysis, this research employs a mixed-theory approach that integrates Mondal's (2017) categorization of hate speech types and Kreidler's (2002) framework of hate speech intentions. The findings reveal that both Luna and Jenner share common experiences of online hate speech, with significant occurrences related to their behaviour, physical appearance, and gender identity. Notably, there was an absence of hate speech targeting disability, ethnicity, or race. Furthermore, the study uncovers that the major intentions behind the hate speech took the form of insulting and insinuating rhetoric. By exploring the unique challenges faced by Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner in navigating online spaces and addressing instances of hate speech, this research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding transgender celebrityhood and online harassment

Abstract

For many students, particularly those learning English as a foreign language, pronunciation emerges as one of the challenges they encounter. Typically, the issue arises from the accent of their first language, as certain languages exhibit variations in comparison to English, including consonants, vowels, word stress, or intonation. The objective of this study was to find out the pronunciation errors in English diphthongs spoken by second-year Senior High School EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The respondents of this research consist of 26 students. The instrument of the research was a pronunciation test of 16 English words containing 8 English diphthongs. The data were collected by directly recording each diphthong pronunciation of the students. This study found that the diphthong /aʊ/ presented the most difficulties for Indonesian students, while diphthong /ɔɪ/ was easier for them to articulate.

Abstract

The Batak Toba traditional wedding ceremony is a significant cultural practice that reflects the social identity and kinship structure of the Batak Toba community. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Batak Toba wedding rituals in the modern context, particularly in Medan City, where urbanization, modernization, and globalization strongly influence traditional practices. Using Alexander Duranti's theoretical framework, this research explores the ideological, symbolic, and structural changes in key stages of the ceremony, such as marhusip, marhata sinamot, and ulaon pesta. A qualitative methodology was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that while core elements such as the exchange of ulos and the reinforcement of kinship ties remain intact, significant shifts have occurred, including a transition from communal preparations to catering services and the simplification of rituals due to economic pressures and modern lifestyles. This study lies in its specific focus on the Batak Toba community in an urban setting, highlighting how traditional ceremonies adapt to modern influences while retaining their cultural essence.
