Abstract

This study investigates the second language acquisition of Alesha, a 6-year-old girl. Despite mastering her mother tongue, Indonesian, Alesha has been exposed to English since a young age through interactions with her parents and media. The study focuses on Alesha's ability of her second language in daily contexts, particularly in interactions with her mother. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research aims to comprehend phenomena by providing detailed descriptions and interpreting their meanings, without using numbers or statistics. Data collection involves interviews, where conversations between the mother and child are recorded, with the researcher noting relevant information. Findings reveal that although Alesha can communicate in English, there are syntactic constraints evident in her sentence patterns, particularly regarding the use of auxiliary verbs and distinguishing between plural and singular nouns. These findings align with observations that Alesha's exposure to her second language is inconsistent. The article highlights the importance of consistency in second language learning patterns for children, whether through parental involvement or media exposure. Research on Alesha is beneficial for parents, language educators, and researchers in understanding children's language development and designing more effective teaching stategies. Furthermore, those interested in researching the same topic are advised to conduct a research with subjects of the same age as Alesha, as well as analysis with other related variables, for a better understanding of second language acquisition in 6-year-old children.

Abstract

Generation Z can be regarded as a generation that since they were born have grown up with the internet. The digital generation's reliance on information and communication technologies in both personal and professional affairs may be at an all-time high. Because they are "technologically proficient," they have some competitive advantages over previous generations. As a result, Gen Zers are prepared and motivated to work in a multicultural business environment, contributing to the advancement of globalization and interconnection. Without a doubt, in today's environment, the transformation of the global workforce is the most globally oriented. With globalization and technology continuing to have an impact, Gen Zers' way of thinking supports cross-cultural social engagement and communication, making bridge leadership skills and strategies increasingly more crucial for CEOs of large and small businesses.

Abstract

This study examines the first language acquisition of a five-year-old child, focusing on phonological development and the influence of environmental factors. Early language acquisition is essential for children's overall development, yet studies that explore the interplay between phonology and environmental dynamics remain underexplored. This research aims to provide insights into how these elements contribute to a child’s linguistic progress. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected over three weeks through systematic observation and question-and-answer sessions, recorded via video calls. The participant, a boy named Alfahrizi Davin Syahputra Hasibuan, or Izzi, was selected due to his early-stage language development. The findings reveal that Izzi can communicate effectively and comprehend conversations within his environment. Parental involvement and a supportive home setting were identified as key factors in enhancing his phonological development, helping him practice correct pronunciation and build confidence in speech. This study highlights the importance of combining phonological analysis with environmental observations to understand how children acquire language in real-world contexts. The results provide practical implications for parents and educators, suggesting that active engagement and positive interaction can significantly influence children’s linguistic abilities and overall communication skills.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the textual, contextual, and non-contextual elements of the Temokan tradition, a vital aspect of Javanese traditional wedding ceremonies. Specifically, it examines the interplay between text, co-text, and context within these ceremonial performances. Data were collected through interviews with informants and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method combined with an ethnographic approach. The research identifies 10 distinct performances and 10 associated texts, involving 8 types of objects classified based on their co-textual features. The co-text in the Temokan tradition includes material elements such as objects used in the ceremonies, the spatial arrangement and distance between participants, and gestures that convey symbolic meaning. Contextual elements encompass ideological, social, cultural, and situational factors, illustrating the depth and richness of the tradition. These elements are further embedded with values and norms, including religious, logical, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions. Norms such as etiquette, customary practices, legal expectations, and habitual behaviors further reflect the tradition's cultural significance. From an anthropolinguistic perspective, the study highlights key performances such as Gantalan Sadak, Wiji Dadi, Wiji Suku, Sindur Binayang, Pangkon Timbang, Tanduring Pengantin, Kacar-Kucur, Dahar Kembul, Martuwi, and Sungkeman. These performances encapsulate the symbolic, cultural, and social meanings that sustain the Temokan tradition's role in preserving Javanese identity and heritage. This research contributes to understanding how linguistic and cultural practices interweave in traditional ceremonies.

Abstract

Using Van Dijk's socio-cognitive approach, this study examines ten feminist-themed memes from Pinterest, emphasizing the discursive, cognitive, and social elements. Three main themes emerge from the analysis of the memes: criticism of gender expectations, assertion of women's strength, and resistance to male control. The results show that women reject male control and dominance in memes under the first group (1.1; 1.3; 1.9), emphasizing female independence and resilience. The second category's memes (1.2, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6) highlight women's strength and independence, demonstrating their capacity to subvert conventional wisdom and reinterpret social norms. The third category (1.7; 1.8; 1.10), on the other hand, criticizes what society expects of women and shows them as defying patriarchal stereotypes. This change demonstrates how digital discourse has developed into a platform that questions established hierarchies of power and encourages social criticism. These memes are vital resources for advancing feminist principles, empowering women, and raising awareness of gender equality because they use sarcasm and comedy. According to the study's findings, memes are more than just amusement; they are potent cultural artifacts that have the capacity to shape public opinion and promote constructive social change.

Abstract

This study explores the manifestations of high-context and low-context communication styles within cross-cultural interactions between Indonesian and American speakers, as portrayed in Puri Viera’s Instagram Reels as the lack of studies by using Indonesian and American as the participants. Utilizing Edward T. Hall’s theory of context communication, the research employs a qualitative content analysis approach to identify and analyze verbal and non-verbal communication patterns. The analysis reveals distinct cultural markers: Indonesian speakers tend to favor indirectness, contextual reliance, and nonverbal cues (high-context), while American speakers exhibit directness, explicitness, and linear logic (low-context). These distinctions not only underscore cultural communication preferences but also demonstrate how digital platforms like Instagram facilitate intercultural dialogue. The findings contribute to the broader understanding of intercultural communication dynamics in digital spaces and provide practical implications for fostering effective, culturally aware interactions on social media.
