Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to isolate hemicellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) and evaluate its potential as a gelling agent in topical gel formulations. Hemicellulose was extracted using alkaline treatment with varying NaOH concentrations (0.05–0.5 N). The highest yield of 12.84% was obtained at 0.5 N NaOH. The isolated hemicellulose was then formulated into five gel preparations using hemicellulose alone, Carbopol 940 alone (2%), and their combinations at different ratios. All formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesiveness, pH, and viscosity over 14 days. The results showed that all gels were homogeneous with acceptable physicochemical properties. Spreadability ranged from 5.3–6.7 cm, adhesiveness from 2.02–2.66 seconds, and viscosity from 2,470–32,800 cPs. Most formulations maintained pH values within the ideal skin range (4.5–6.5). Combination formulations exhibited better gel characteristics than hemicellulose alone, indicating a synergistic effect with Carbopol 940. This research demonstrates that hemicellulose derived from OPEFB can serve as a promising natural gelling agent in pharmaceutical gels. The utilization of this agricultural waste offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic excipients while adding economic value to oil palm biomass.

Abstract

Copper nanoparticles are widely developed for their physicochemical and biological properties, and plant-based green synthesis offers an environmentally friendly alternative. This study aimed to synthesize copper nanoparticles using an aqueous leaf extract of Java plum (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) as a bioreductor and stabilizing agent, and to evaluate their antioxidant activity. The extract was obtained by hot-water extraction and mixed with Cu(NO₃)₂ solution at various precursor-to-extract ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4). The dried material was characterized and phytochemically screened, the synthesized product was analyzed using a Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), and antioxidant activity was assessed by the DPPH method. Phytochemical screening revealed flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and glycosides. Copper particle formation was indicated by a colour change to greenish-brown and precipitate formation. The smallest particle size (175.41 nm) was obtained at the 1:4 ratio, although still within the submicron range. The synthesized copper particles exhibited very strong antioxidant activity (IC₅₀ 41.24 µg/mL), higher than the extract alone (IC₅₀ 72.63 µg/mL). These results indicate that S. cumini leaf extract is a promising eco-friendly bioreductor for producing antioxidant-active copper particles, with further optimization needed to reach the nanoscale.

Abstract

Nano-MgO was synthesized via a nitrate–citrate sol–gel combustion method, in which magnesium nitrate acted as the oxidizing precursor and citric acid served simultaneously as the chelating agent and organic fuel. The formation of a homogeneous Mg–citrate coordination network enabled controlled gelation, while the auto-combustion process produced a porous MgO matrix composed of ultrafine crystallites. Calcination at 800 °C promoted phase consolidation, removal of organic residues, and enhanced long-range atomic ordering. X-ray diffraction confirmed the exclusive formation of the cubic periclase phase (fm3m), with no detectable hydroxide or carbonate impurities. Crystallite size analysis yielded an average size of 16.03 nm based on the Scherrer equation, whereas the Williamson–Hall method produced a larger value of 25.44 nm with a microstrain of 5.37 × 10-4. indicating minimal lattice distortion. The discrepancy between the two size estimates reflects the contribution of microstrain effect not considered in the Scherrer approach. Overall, the synthesized nano-MgO exhibits high crystallinity, narrow crystallite size distribution, and excellent structural stability, highlighting its potential for catalytic, gas-sensing, and high-temperature functional applications. These results demonstrate that the sol–gel combustion method is an efficient and reliable strategy for producing nanocrystalline MgO with well-controlled structural characteristics.

Abstract

Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) is one of the main by-products of the palm oil industry, predominantly composed of silica (SiO2) and various other metal oxides. Nano-POFA (P1) was synthesized using a top-down approach via high-energy ball milling process at a rotational speed of 1300 rpm for 1 hour using 4 mm-diameter milling balls. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the dominant crystalline phases were Quartz (SiO2) and Mullite (Al6Si2O13), accompanied by minor phases such as Cristobalite (SiO2), Hematit (Fe2O3), Calcite (CaCO3), CaO, and Al2O3. The XRD analysis results of samples P0 (without ball milling) and P1 (1 hour of ball milling) revealed a significant decrease in peak intensity and peak broadening after 1 hour of the milling process. This phenomenon indicates partial amorphization and crystal fragmentation. The average crystallite size decreased from 92.14 nm in sample P0 to 47.52 nm in sample P1. These results indicate that the high-energy ball milling process induces lattice distortion, structural disorder, and amorphization within the Si-O framework of the POFA. The Williamson-Hall analysis indicated an increase in microstrain from ԑ=3.38 x 10-3 to ԑ=1.227 x 10-2. The structural transformations increase surface defect density and reactivity, signifying nano-POFA’s potential as material heterogenous catalyst for related chemical processes
