Abstract

Digital transformation in Islamic education necessitates innovative pedagogical strategies that honor religious values while equipping students with 21st-century skills. Within this context, pesantren””Islamic boarding schools rooted in Qur’anic memorization and character formation””face the challenge of integrating modern tools without compromising their core traditions. This study aims to explore how student-led video content creation fosters character development and digital literacy among elementary-aged students at Pesantren Anak-anak Tahfidzul Qur’an Raudlatul Falah (PPATQ RF), Central Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed that video production activities actively fostered values aligned with Islamic ethics, including discipline, responsibility, collaboration, and creativity. Students engaged not only with digital tools but also internalized moral lessons through scripting, directing, and reflecting on religious themes, such as honesty, patience, and communal accountability. While the initiative enhanced student engagement and self-confidence, it also encountered pesantren-specific challenges, such as time constraints due to tahfidz schedules, limited equipment, and the need for teacher training in media literacy. These findings highlight that integrating digital storytelling within pesantren pedagogy can serve as a transformative method for nurturing akhlāq al-karÄ«mah (noble character) in line with Islamic educational ideals. This model offers new pathways for reimagining pesantren as centers of both religious integrity and technological adaptability.
Knowing Talent from an Early Age: Between Normative Awareness and Reflective Ignorance of Students Taufikin Taufikin

Abstract

This research departs from a conceptual unease about the importance of recognizing talent early in the framework of Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s thought. In this study, ‘talent’ refers to students’ inherent aptitudes, abilities, or natural potentials that can be recognized and developed. In his view, a free human being is an individual who can understand their potential from a young age through a continuous process of growth into adulthood. However, the reality of education shows a gap between awareness of the importance of talent and the ability to recognize it concretely. Here, ‘normative awareness’ means students’ understanding of the general or accepted importance of knowing their abilities, while ‘reflective awareness’ refers to their personal, conscious recognition of their own talents. This study uses a descriptive, quantitative approach and a survey method, involving 78 second-semester students from three mathematics classes. The research instrument consists of 12 questions that measure perception and self-awareness related to talent. The research results show that all respondents (100%) stated the importance of knowing their talents from an early age, but all (100%) also admitted they did not know their talents for sure. These findings indicate a disjunction between normative awareness and reflective awareness within the students. Theoretically, this condition indicates a weak guidance process within the education system that has not yet helped students fully recognize their potential. This research provides important implications for the development of a more reflective, dialogical, and individual potential-exploration-oriented, student-centered education model

Abstract

The changing paradigm of higher education in the modern era demands the integration of intellectual and spiritual development among university students. However, many educational institutions still separate these two dimensions, resulting in a gap between academic knowledge and moral character formation. This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education in enhancing students’ intellectual capacity through an integrative approach grounded in Islamic values. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the research utilized in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving one pesantren head, four teachers, and twelve university students at the An-Nasuchiyah Student Islamic Boarding School in Kudus, Central Java. The findings reveal that pesantren education plays a strategic role in fostering critical thinking, self-regulated learning, and autonomy through the integration of religious and academic activities. Intellectual traditions such as classical text studies (kajian kitab), bahtsul masā’il (collaborative scholarly deliberation), and muhadharah (public speaking practice) not only strengthen religious literacy but also cultivate analytical and argumentative reasoning skills. The pesantren’s disciplined routines and communal life effectively nurture resilience, social awareness, and ethical consciousness among students. This study underscores pesantren as a holistic educational model that harmonizes spirituality, intellectuality, and morality as the foundation for developing ethically grounded academic individuals. The study concludes that pesantren must continue adapting to technological innovation and research-based curricula to remain relevant in the digital era

Abstract

The integration of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) and Islamic boarding schools under one roof presents a new configuration in Islamic education management that no longer separates formal and traditional systems. This study aims to reveal how the hybrid leadership of the kiai, serving as both the boarding school supervisor and the head of the madrasah, shapes a distinctive, layered governance pattern. Using a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design at MI Tahfidzul Qur’an and PPATQ Raudlatul Falah Pati, data were collected through observations of 530 students, in-depth interviews with the kiai, administrators, tahfiz teachers, murabbi, parents, and students, and the analysis of institutional documents. The findings indicate that the one roof system fosters an integration of authority that is not merely administrative but rooted in spiritual and cultural legitimacy. The management structure operates in a dual yet inseparable pattern, where formal and informal roles mutually reinforce one another. The curriculum is not merged but connected through the continuity of values between classroom learning and dormitory life. The educational environment fosters total control, enabling intensive and sustained character internalization. However, behind this integration, tensions emerge regarding professionalism and the distribution of authority. This study proposes the concept of Hybrid-Integrative Islamic School Governance (HIISG) as a synthesis between charismatic authority and managerial rationality in contemporary Islamic education. This concept expands the global discourse on value-based educational governance models that are both adaptive to tradition and responsive to the demands of modernity.

Abstract

Amid an increasingly intense digital landscape, student recruitment promotion in Islamic boarding schools often remains merely an administrative practice rather than a pedagogical space. This gap raises fundamental questions about the possibility of integrating social media into an authentic learning process. This study aims to examine the management of student recruitment promotion as an outcome of social media learning at PPATQ Raudlatul Falah Pati, using a qualitative case study approach and employing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and digital content analysis. The research findings indicate that promotional activities have evolved into a dynamic learning practice. Students do not merely serve as the subjects of promotion but as active content creators who construct religious narratives, visual aesthetics, and institutional identity. This process integrates digital literacy with spiritual character development, resulting in content that is not merely communicative but also reflective and educational. On the other hand, this practice reveals a tension between educational ideals and the logic of digital visibility, which demands a balance between authenticity and representation. This study proposes the concept of pedagogical branding as an integration of learning, student participation, and value-based promotional strategies. These findings contribute to the development of social media theory in Islamic education and offer practical implications for the design of adaptive, participatory, and meaningful learning in the digital age.

Abstract

This study analyses how Total Quality Management (TQM) is implemented in the governance of elite Islamic boarding schools through the interaction between the Visionary, Integrated, and Prestigious (VIP) orientation and maqāṣid al-sharī'ah as an ethical control system. The study employs a qualitative approach with a multi-case study design at Pesantren Ar-Rohmah Putra Malang, IBS Ar-Rohmah Putri Malang, and Pesantren Islam Al-Irsyad Tengaran. Data were collected through document analysis, semi-structured interviews with 22 informants, and participatory observation, and were subsequently analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and cross-case comparisons. The results indicate that TQM serves as a stabilising mechanism for the quality management process through system strengthening, continuous evaluation, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making. The implementation of TQM is influenced by VIP Orientation, which reinforces strategic vision, institutional integration, and institutional legitimacy. At the same time, maqāṣid al-sharī'ah functions as an ethical control mechanism that ensures all managerial practices remain oriented toward Islamic values. The interaction of these three elements forms the Spiritual Quality Governance (SQG) framework, which integrates managerial effectiveness, institutional legitimacy, and moral-spiritual responsibility in pesantren governance. This study is limited to three elite pesantren; therefore, its results cannot yet be generalised to all types of pesantren in Indonesia. Consequently, future research is recommended to test the relevance of the SQG framework across various models of Islamic educational institutions using a comparative approach or mixed-methods design to expand its empirical validity and theoretical development
Cleanliness culture as hidden curriculum: An empirical study of character internalisation in primary education Taufikin Taufikin

Abstract

This study examines the pre-learning cleanliness culture as a mechanism of the hidden curriculum in the internalisation of character among elementary school students. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews and documentation of school practices. The findings reveal that the internalisation of values does not occur through formal instruction but rather through repeated practices that directly shape moral experiences. Three main dimensions were identified: behavioral habituation that establishes patterns of discipline, teacher modeling that provides moral legitimacy, and school structures that maintain the consistency of these practices. The interaction of these three elements forms an implicit learning ecosystem in which values manifest as lived actions rather than merely as taught concepts. These findings also reveal that, without reflection, practices can lead to mechanical compliance, requiring a balance between action and awareness. The novelty of this research lies in the conceptualisation of the Embodied Hidden Curriculum, which positions everyday practices as the primary locus of character formation. This research contributes to expanding the discourse on character education by emphasising that the power of moral transformation often lies in simple actions consistently repeated within school life.

Abstract

Islamic education in Indonesia faces the challenge of integrating rich local values with more holistic educational goals. This study explores local wisdom's application in transformative Islamic education, focusing on student character development at MAN 1 Kudus and MAN Demak. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviewed to 18 informants, participatory observation and document analysis. The results showed that integrating local values such as unggah-ungguh, guyub, srawung, and nrimo ing pandum has successfully strengthened students' character in social responsibility, tolerance, and spiritual resilience. However, the main challenges in implementation are the diversity of local values in Indonesia and educators' limited understanding of the importance of local wisdom integration. The findings suggest further training for educators and closer collaboration between madrasahs, families and communities. This research contributes to developing local wisdom-based Islamic education models and opens opportunities for further studies on applying similar models in different cultural contexts.
