Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of students in the Arabic Language Education Program at Jambi University regarding plagiarism in academic assignments and to identify the reasons or factors underlying such practices. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach. The research population consisted of students from the Arabic Language Education Program at Jambi University from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts. A total of 47 respondents were selected using a random sampling technique. Data were collected through a survey using a questionnaire as the research instrument. The collected data were analyzed using PSPP to obtain descriptive statistical results. The findings reveal that students hold diverse perceptions of the concept of plagiarism and the factors contributing to plagiaristic behavior. The most common understanding of plagiarism among the respondents is the act of taking another person's ideas, text, or work and claiming it as one's own. The main factors contributing to plagiarism include insufficient time to meet assignment deadlines, the perception that lecturers do not differentiate in grading between plagiarized and original assignments, and the lack of clear institutional regulations regarding plagiarism. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for higher education institutions in strengthening the promotion of academic integrity, improving students' understanding of proper citation practices, and enhancing plagiarism prevention efforts to support a more effective academic learning environment.
