Abstract

English communication skills are one of the 21st century educational skills demand to face the technological and industrial era. The previous studies have examined the influence of Turn-Taking Strategy (TTS) on speaking skill in the classroom, but no one has examined its influence on the issue of student engagement which is always being discussed recently. Hence, this study addresses the gap by investigating the effect of TTS through speaking skills and student engagement in EFL classroom. A total of 30 tenth grade students at SMK TPI Al-Ghoniyyah are divided into experimental and control groups using a non-random sampling approach with purposive sampling technique. This study used a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent (pretest and post-test) control group design. The researcher used observation sheet, speaking tests and documentation to collect the data and parametric statistical analysis which consists of testing requirements and hypotheses to analyse the data. The findings indicated that TTS positively influence students' speaking skills and engagement with a significance value of 0.00 ≤ 0.05. The mean difference values of experimental and control group were 3.20 and 18.20 higher than 1.00 and 3.07 showed the impact of TTS in fostering EFL student’s self-confidence, developing interactional competence, and overcoming engagement problems. The formation of positive characters and personality types of EFL student was revealed indirectly in this study.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in developing Grade VII students' skimming skills for descriptive text comprehension at SMPN 18 Bandung over four weeks. A total of 62 students participated in the study, divided equally into an experimental group (n=31) and a control group (n=31). Both groups were assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments. The experimental group, which received instruction through the PBL approach, showed a statistically significant improvement in their reading comprehension scores—from a pre-test average of 27.387 to a post-test average of 40.354 (gain = 12.967). In contrast, the control group, which received conventional instruction, improved from 25.354 to 36.387 (gain = 11.032). The results indicate that the PBL approach is more effective than traditional methods in enhancing students’ skimming skills and comprehension of descriptive texts. It is suggested that English teachers consider implementing Project-Based Learning as an alternative instructional strategy to improve reading comprehension and overall academic achievement.

Abstract

The Project-Based Learning (PBL) model is still rarely used in learning to write recount texts, even though it has significant potential to improve students' writing skills. Therefore, this research focuses on improving students' recount text writing skills using Project-Based Learning (PBL) models. It aims to see how effectively the PBL models can improve students' ability to write Recount Text for SMA Negeri 21 Bandung tenth-grade students. This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey design. The data collection technique for this research uses a questionnaire with the application of a five-point Likert scale with descriptive statistics analysis. Based on the survey, the findings of this research show that using the PBL models can effectively improve students' ability to write recount text. The survey results showed an average score of 3.74, with 7.4% of respondents strongly agreeing, 61.1% agreeing, 29.6% neutral, and 1.9% disagreeing. In addition, student perceptions state that this model helps learning and increases Motivation and engagement. The survey revealed that students felt more motivated to write Recount Text after participating in PBL. The data showed that 5.6% of respondents strongly agreed, 55.6% agreed, and 37.0%  respondents were neutral. The study also found that PBL models involved students more in learning activities than other models, with an average score of 3.65. The implications of this research show that PBL improves students' ability to write recount texts by involving them in projects, providing constructive feedback, and increasing activity, Motivation, and creativity.

Abstract

The decline of national values caused by the weakness of character education. This research aims to gain an overview of the character education management in VACATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-based Religious Organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) And Muhammadiyyah In Bandung City. The method used is descriptive qualitative approach method and technique of triangulation. Research results show that management education character was made based on the appropriate program of management and the functions are used. The conclusion that the management of character education in VACATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-based Religious Organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) And Muhammadiyyah In Bandung City was made from planning, organizing, implementing and monitoring that in it there is the assessment process although those are not optimal.

Abstract

One-way communication, where teachers dominate classroom discourse, can significantly hinder effective teaching and learning. This limited interaction often stems from students' low willingness to communicate, often due to fear of judgment or ridicule for making mistakes. This reluctance to engage can negatively impact their academic performance. Therefore, it becomes the teacher's responsibility to identify and implement appropriate methods to address this issue. Cooperative learning emerges as a promising approach, as it centers on student-focused group activities. By employing this method, student interaction can be enhanced, reducing anxiety and fostering the development of essential social skills. This research aims to study the effectiveness of cooperative learning in promoting willingness to communicate orally. This research employed a quantitative methodology. The gathered data was meticulously tabulated and analyzed using paired t-tests to determine the significance of cooperative learning in improving students' oral communication readiness. Additionally, independent t-tests were conducted to examine any differences between the experimental and control classes. The study involved a sample of students from SMK Plus Darussurur. The results of the paired t-tests revealed a positive influence of cooperative learning on students' willingness to communicate orally. Furthermore, a significant difference in post-test scores was observed between the experimental and control classes. These findings provide compelling evidence that cooperative learning fosters positive interactions, which in turn cultivate increased willingness to communicate orally. By encouraging active student participation and collaboration, cooperative learning creates a supportive environment where students feel empowered to express themselves without fear of judgment, leading to improved academic.

Abstract

Burnout among pre-service teachers has become an increasing concern in teacher education, especially during teaching practicum, which requires high levels of cognitive, emotional, and instructional involvement. Although there is extensive literature on burnout in in-service teachers, little research has examined its relationship with teaching performance among pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesia. This study explores the link between burnout and teaching performance among 45 pre-service EFL teachers at Universitas Islam Nusantara who completed the PLP 2 (Teaching Practicum) programme. Burnout levels were assessed using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI), while teaching performance was measured with a researcher-developed Pre-service Teacher Performance Assessment Questionnaire (PTPAQ). Both tools were validated and found reliable, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.721 and 0.779, respectively. Because the data were not normally distributed, Spearman’s rho correlation analysis was performed. Results showed a weak and non-significant negative correlation (r = -0.219, p > 0.05) between burnout and teaching performance. These findings indicate that only. Pedagogical competence and support systems influence pre-service teaching performance more than burnout. The study emphasises the importance of teacher education programmes implementing structured mentorship and resilience-building initiatives to improve teaching quality during practicum.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Implementation of the Policy of the Directorate General of Islamic Education Circular No. 10 of 2024 concerning the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) at the Tarogong Islamic Boarding School, Garut Regency, and its impact on students' learning motivation. Education, especially in Islamic boarding schools, requires special attention regarding adequate nutritional access for students, which has a significant impact on the learning process. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design, which allows researchers to explore in depth the experiences and perceptions of students, teachers, Islamic boarding school leaders, kitchen managers and parents regarding this program. The results of the study indicate that this policy has a positive impact on students' learning motivation, where the majority of students reported increased enthusiasm and concentration in participating in learning after receiving nutritious food intake regularly. However, there are challenges in its implementation, such as the quality of distribution and the need for training for supporting staff. This study provides recommendations for related parties to improve collaboration between educational institutions, local governments, and logistics providers for the sustainability of the program, as well as implementing evaluation mechanisms to improve aspects that are less effective. In conclusion, the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) not only functions as a nutritional intervention, but also as an important strategy in improving the motivation and learning achievement of students in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Communication anxiety significantly hinders learning outcomes in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This research explores the correlation between interpersonal intelligence and communication anxiety among high school students, assessing how variations in interpersonal skills influence anxiety levels during EFL interactions. Employing a quantitative approach, the study engaged 32 eleventh-grade students from class 11 MIPA 3 at SMA Mekar Arum, selected through random sampling. Data were collected using designed questionnaires to evaluate interpersonal intelligence and communication anxiety and analyzed with Pearson Product Moment Correlation via SPSS 22.0. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between interpersonal intelligence and communication anxiety (r= -0.494, p < 0.05), demonstrating that students with higher interpersonal intelligence experience lower communication anxiety. Notably, 65.6% of the students demonstrated medium levels of interpersonal intelligence, while 34.4% had high levels. In terms of communication anxiety, 56.3% of students experienced moderate levels, and 43.8% experienced high levels. Conclusively, this study underscores the importance of fostering interpersonal intelligence as a strategic approach to alleviate communication anxiety in EFL settings. It recommends that EFL instructors integrate group-based and interactive activities that enhance interpersonal relations among students to improve their educational experience and outcomes.

Abstract

Given the significance of corrective feedback in enhancing language learners’ speaking skills, especially in boosting accuracy and motivation, this study aims to examine the impact of direct oral corrective feedback (OCF) on Indonesian EFL learners. While research has shown that teacher feedback plays a crucial role in student performance, there is limited insight into how students interpret and engage with feedback—a factor essential to its effectiveness. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method, this study involved 39 vocational school students from SMK Medikacom in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews, enabling a thorough exploration of students’ responses, behaviours, and attitudes toward Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF). Oral Corrective Feedback (OCF) improved students' speaking skills, with Recast, Clarification Request, and Repetition being the most common types and Recast being the most effective for error correction without disrupting communication. Students reported gains in pronunciation, grammar, fluency, confidence, and teacher-student rapport. Some students, however, felt discomfort with feedback, highlighting the need for a supportive, non-judgmental approach to prevent negative emotional impacts. This study suggests that while implicit feedback benefits advanced learners, lower-proficiency students may need more explicit correction. To maximise OCF’s impact, educators are encouraged to tailor feedback to individual proficiency levels and focus on fostering supportive, adaptive classroom environments.
