Abstract

Ecological literacy is an essential aspect for fostering an understanding of and responsibility for environmental stewardship in young learners, yet limited research examines how children engage with ecological concepts in unique island-based settings. This study aimed to explore the primary pupils’ perceptions of ecological literacy at an island-based school through participation in a mangrove planting program. Employing a case study research design with ten participants, semi-structured interviews revealed five themes: foundational understanding, personal connection to nature, daily environmental awareness, environmental education value, and concern for preservation. Pupils’ attitudes toward ecological responsibility revealed seven themes: belief in personal and collective agency, practical environmental actions, environmental impact awareness, emotional connection to nature, peer encouragement participation, stewardship, and experiential learning. The results undeline the need of practical, place-based educational activities in fostering ecological literacy. This program help pupils to develop active participation and feeling of responsibility and deepen their knowledge of environmental ideas.

Abstract

This study explores university lecturers’ perceptions of a national professional development program delivered asynchronously via the Moodle platform in Indonesia. While asynchronous learning is increasingly adopted for large-scale training, limited research has examined how lecturers in developing countries perceive its usability, effectiveness, and challenges. Addressing this gap, the study aimed to investigate lecturers’ perceptions and the challenges they encountered during Moodle-based asynchronous training. Using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, this study involved 511 Indonesian lecturers selected through total population sampling for the quantitative phase and purposive sampling for the qualitative interviews. The questionnaire as the quantitative instrument measured four sub-scales: accessibility, ease of use, effectiveness, and motivational impact of LMS. The questionnaire demonstrated strong reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.877). Descriptive statistical analysis was employed, revealing high mean scores for all aspects (M = 4.65 to 4.85), indicating positive perceptions of the training. The highest agreement was found in the ease of implementing the training via the LMS (M = 4.85, SD = 0.39). Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically, highlighting challenges such as unstable internet access, limited device functionality, and unclear material organization. These results suggest that while Moodle is perceived as an effective tool for professional development, structural and technical improvements are needed. The study recommends enhanced technical support, better content structuring, and training orientation to increase engagement and learning outcomes in similar future programs.

Abstract

High-order thinking skills (HOTS) are important skills that need to be developed early on. The Problem Based Learning (PBL) model as an active learning approach has the potential to improve students' HOTS by involving them in solving real-world problems. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and curiosity in improving high-order thinking skills (HOTS) of fifth-grade elementary school students, as well as to analyze the interaction of the two variables in supporting the development of students' cognitive skills. The research method applied is an experimental study with a 2 x 2 factorial design, involving two independent variables, namely the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and curiosity, and one dependent variable, namely high-order thinking skills (HOTS). The sample used in this study was 68 fifth-grade students from two elementary schools in Jakarta who were randomly selected using the cluster random sampling technique. The data collection techniques used were through HOTS ability tests, curiosity questionnaires, and observations of the learning process. Data analysis was carried out using a two-way ANOVA test to identify the influence and interaction between variables. In conclusion, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is effective to be applied in learning to improve students' HOTS, especially if supported by a high sense of curiosity. This approach can create a more meaningful and relevant learning environment, and become one of the innovative strategies in efforts to improve the quality of learning at the elementary school.
