Abstract

The purpose of this study is to validate the students’ readiness of online learning questionnaire based on previous research, conceptualized in attitudes toward learning aspects. Six dimensions of attitudes toward learning aspects comprised of learning flexibility (LF), attitude online learning (OL), online interaction (OI), study management (SM), technology (TE), classroom learning (CL), and readiness of blended learning (RBL). 243 secondary students in a rural area in Bali participated in this study. Google form was delivered after the participants agree to join the study and filled the consent form. The data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess the hypotheses. The findings showed that a four-correlated model including attitudes toward study management, classroom learning, learning flexibility, and readiness of blended learning factors was validated by the results of EFA and CFA. Internal reliability confirmed the consistency factors, the validity provided evidence for significance relationships between them. Unlike previous study’s findings, this study discovered that attitudes toward online learning, attitudes toward technology, and attitudes toward online interaction are not essential elements of students’ readiness for online learning. This finding highlights pedagogical aspects, which turn into the essential idea in determining how prepared students are for online learning. The result can only be generalized to other areas of Indonesia through further researches

Abstract

The practice of translanguaging still raises confusion as to whether it is similar to other linguistic practices. We realize that individuals who have the ability to master more than one language will consciously and spontaneously exchange or mix languages in a particular social action. The mindset of monolingualism is often a limitation for speakers of bilingualism or multilingualism to use all the language resources they have to form a meaning. This study aims to look at the translanguaging practices that appear in vlog videos belonging to public figures such as Maudy Ayunda and see how the audience reacts in the comment section of Maudy Ayunda's personal YouTube channel. Because previous research is more focusing on implementing the translanguaging practice into the classroom and searching for teacher or student perception towards translanguaging. This research employs a case study qualitative research approach and thematic analysis to examine the themes that emerge from the video transcripts and comments. The findings of this study found that Maudy Ayunda frequently speaks entirely in English to convey feelings of enthusiasm. And the research findings also discovered varied reactions in the comment section

Abstract

Although doubts may arise on the relevance of literature and reading aloud in this digital era, the present study sides with experts’ opinion that teaching aloud is an essential strategy to use literature to nurture soft skills among children. By implementing George’s model of Library research (2008), the present study critically reviews experts’ opinions and previous studies on the use of literary texts throught reading aloud for developing children’s soft skills.Using Wagner’s dimensions of soft skills, the present study reviews a total of 30 books and rticles published in reputable international journals or accredited national journals, with 25 of them published in the last ten years and 15 of them purports reading aloud for developing childfrren’s soft skills. The study reveals that listening to works of literature through reading aloud activity is argued to be beneficial for improving children’s analytical thinking, communicative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, curiousity and imagination, and initiative. While there are not yet explicit arguments on the use of literature through reading aloud for developing children’s agility / adaptability and collaborative skills, the present study implies that reading aloud should be a regular partr of children’s exposure to literature concerning the development of their soft skills.

Abstract

This study explores the writing challenges faced by grade 11 hospitality students at SMKN 1. Sukasada, Bali. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data was collected through a questionnaire from 13 students, which featured both closed and open-ended questions. The findings revealed significant obstacles such as inadequate practice in writing, preference for theoretical learning over practical application, and heavy reliance on translation tools. Students had difficulties with grammar, mechanical errors and limited vocabulary, which affected their proficiency in English communication. This study underscores the importance of integrating practical writing exercises with theoretical instruction to improve language skills and reduce reliance on translation aids. It advocates educational strategies that emphasize regular writing practice and balanced assessment to better prepare students for success in the hospitality industry.

Abstract

A recent study suggests that poetry might offer unique insights into improving English language development. Despite these benefits, many language teachers avoid using poetry since teaching English through poetry in non-English-speaking countries is difficult. Poetry's ability to support language development has been overlooked due to teachers’ challenges. This shows a serious lack of understanding of teachers’ pedagogical skills in using literature to educate. Large-scale quantitative studies have examined teachers' experiences and challenges. Nevertheless, this study focuses on what they consider crucial pedagogical factors in employing poetry in English classes. This qualitative survey includes 15 English teachers. A teacher questionnaire was given to discuss their needs in constructing poetry-based English language learning practices, and interviews were performed to examine kindergarten and elementary school English language learning. The findings portrayed that poetry improves pupils' listening and speaking skills and vocabulary building. In addition, they thought that songs/lyrics and poetry should be used more in teaching and learning. A thematic analysis showed how teaching strategies, poem selection, and impact are varied.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to fill the existing research gap by examining the relationship between SRL and the 21st Century skills in distance education, highlighting the significance of understanding how these competencies intersect to enhance remote learning outcomes. The research design of this study is a systematic literature review adopting George’s (2008) model. The data were collected through assigning codes, developing themes, comparing and conducting close scrutiny of the codes and themes using 48 articles as secondary data sources. After the data were collected, qualitative analysis was done. The findings of this article have mainly addressed the positive light of twenty-first-century learning. The 21st Century skills fall into three categories: learning, literacy, and life skills. Students’ SRL directly affects their self-efficacy towards distance learning, while other factors, such as readiness and motivation, are also very contributive. The component of self-regulation concerns students ' active learning and taking a reflective role in their cognition, behaviour, emotions, and motivation of academic functioning to fulfill the requirement of twenty-first-century skills. Distance education potentially provides an environment that helps students manage their way of thinking in a way aligned with the 21st Century's needs. Furthermore, within Islamic studies, this research contributes to an emerging discourse on how SRL strategies can be tailored to cultivate critical Islamic perspectives and knowledge acquisition in online educational settings. How to Cite: Mahayanti, N.W. Abstract

AbstractThe research delves into code-switching among Indonesian speakers in the UK, covering the syntactic and functional reasons why they use code-switching in intra-sentential contexts by applying Poplack's theory in syntactic and Hoffmann's theory in functional. Data collection includes repeated video watching, taking notes, and categorising code-switching used in the video podcast. Those steps require repeated execution to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection and analysis. After categorising and identifying patterns of code-switching, it is followed by interpreting the findings and making connections to Poplacks and Hoffmans’ theories which led to the conclusion-drawing. The analysis presents nine states of intra-sentential switching parts of speech and seven categories of code-switching functions. Of 134 instances of code-switching, 104 were intra-sentential, with ICs being the most common (32%). Speakers primarily used code-switching to discuss specific topics, accounting for 37.67% of all instances. The results indicate that speakers would rather negotiate higher units, such as clauses, because the language feature is part of their regular use of English in the UK. This study demonstrates how code-switching helps with communication and identity formation for bilingual speakers. In relevance for language education, code-switching, as a pedagogical tool, can enhance comprehension and participation in language education programs, particularly in more complexly multilingual classrooms. Future research should also examine code-switching in various cultural contexts and use interdisciplinary methodologies to fully fund this linguistic phenomenon.
