Abstract

This study explores the pedagogy of the hidden curriculum in Basic Advanced Course (Kursus Mahir Dasar/KMD) programs and its role in character internalization at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The research aims to analyze how institutional culture, social interaction, and value habituation function as pedagogical mechanisms in shaping students’ character within pesantren education. This study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving KMD participants, supervising ustadz, and organizational mentors. Data analysis was conducted thematically through data condensation, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the hidden curriculum operates intensively through the pesantren’s twenty-four-hour institutional culture, exemplary role modeling, leadership practices, and experiential learning activities. Character values such as discipline, responsibility, independence, cooperation, leadership, and self-confidence were internalized through repetitive habituation and direct social engagement rather than through formal instruction alone. The study further demonstrates that KMD activities function as a strategic experiential learning arena where organizational responsibilities and communal interactions strengthen students’ moral and social development. The novelty of this study lies in positioning the hidden curriculum as an intentional pedagogical ecosystem embedded within leadership-based experiential education in pesantren. This research contributes theoretically to hidden curriculum discourse and practically to the development of holistic character education models in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the role of Panggung Gembira as a medium of embodied Islamic character education at Pondok Modern. The research aims to analyze how performing arts activities contribute to the formation of Islamic character among sixth-grade female students through lived educational experiences. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study collected data through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The participants consisted of sixth-grade female students involved in organizing and performing Panggung Gembira. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to identify themes emerging from students’ experiences during the preparation and performance processes. The findings reveal that Panggung Gembira functions not merely as an artistic performance, but as an embodied educational arena integrating cooperation, conflict management, creativity, self-management, self-evaluation, leadership, and independence within the pesantren culture. Islamic values were internalized through collective artistic practices, emotional engagement, organizational responsibility, and reflective interaction. The study further demonstrates that performing arts in pesantren serve as a hidden curriculum through which students experience moral and spiritual formation beyond formal classroom instruction. This research contributes to contemporary Islamic education discourse by positioning performing arts as a transformative pedagogical space for embodied religiosity, female leadership development, and experiential character education in modern pesantren.

Abstract

Libraries in modern Islamic boarding schools play an important role not only as centers of learning resources but also as spaces for developing students’ organizational and leadership capacities. This study examines how the activities of the Ganespo Library Assistants at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor contribute to the improvement of book management competencies and organizational leadership among students. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the optimization of library assistant activities was implemented through organized work programs, including task allocation, duty scheduling, collection inventory, borrowing services, bookshelf arrangement, and routine evaluations. These activities enhanced students’ discipline, accuracy, responsibility, teamwork, and managerial abilities. Furthermore, participation in the organization fostered leadership skills through collaborative decision-making, task delegation, and organizational coordination. The study also found that the library organization strengthened the literacy culture within the pesantren by improving students’ access to reading materials and learning resources. In conclusion, the Ganespo Library Assistant program functions as an effective medium for managerial training, character education, and leadership development in contemporary Islamic boarding school education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internalization of disciplinary values through the reward and punishment approach in Islamic Religious Education learning at junior high schools. This research was motivated by the existence of various disciplinary problems among students, such as tardiness, lack of responsibility in completing assignments, and violations of school regulations. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a multi-site study design conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo, SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo, and SMP Ma’arif 1 Ponorogo. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing using source and technique triangulation. The findings revealed that the implementation of reward and punishment in Islamic Religious Education learning had a positive impact on shaping students’ disciplinary character. Rewards were given in the form of praise, verbal appreciation, additional scores, and appreciation for positive behavior, while punishments were applied educatively through warnings, advice, guidance, and educational assignments. In addition, the internalization of disciplinary values was strengthened through positive habituation and teacher role modeling in daily school activities. The consistent implementation of reward and punishment was proven to improve students’ learning motivation, responsibility, and compliance with school regulations. Therefore, reward and punishment can be an effective strategy in developing students’ disciplinary character in junior high schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the assignment model in inclusive education as an effort to foster tolerance at the Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation over a one-year period. The results indicate that tolerance education at Gontor is implemented through two main models: direct tolerance education, which emphasizes cross-group interaction between students, and indirect tolerance education, which focuses on developing an open personality toward differences. The assignment model is an integral part of leadership education, where students are given various tasks that require responsibility, collaboration, and initiative in organizations and social activities. Through assignments, students learn to lead, cooperate, and manage their time, thus fostering active and passive tolerance in the daily life of the Islamic boarding school. This model has proven effective in developing the character of students who are tolerant, disciplined, and ready to live in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of internalising character values among female students through the Fiqhunnisa Programme at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Putri 1, as well as to identify the character values instilled in the programme. The Fiqhunnisa Programme is a learning activity designed to equip female students with an understanding of women’s fiqh whilst instilling Islamic character values relevant to daily life. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with mentors and female students, and documentation of activities. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, whilst data validity was tested using source and method triangulation techniques. The research findings indicate that the internalisation of character values within the Fiqhunnisa Programme is carried out through several stages, namely the imparting of an understanding of values, setting a good example, habit formation, supervision, and evaluation. The character values internalised include religiosity, responsibility, discipline, positive modesty, politeness, cleanliness, and self-awareness as Muslim women. The internalisation of these values takes place not only through the delivery of material but also through direct practice in the daily lives of the female students within the boarding school environment. The Fiqhunnisa programme contributes to shaping the character of female students so that they possess noble morals, understand their role and identity as women in accordance with Islamic teachings, and are able to implement these values in both their personal and social lives.
