Abstract

Abstract

AbstractThe utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) has become a focus in efforts to improve public health through natural and independent means. This community service activity was conducted in Muaragembong, aiming to increase the community's knowledge about the benefits of TOGA and how to use it in daily life. The identified issue was the lack of understanding and skills within the community to utilize the medicinal plants available around them. The method employed in this service activity was a participatory-based extension, followed by hands-on training on how to plant, maintain, and process TOGA into beneficial herbal products. The results obtained showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge, from 33,21% in the pre-test to 64,64% in the post-test. The majority of participants now have a better understanding of the health benefits of various TOGA plants, such as turmeric, ginger, and moringa. This activity also had a positive impact on economic empowerment, with many participants planning to plant TOGA in their yards and share the knowledge with others. The importance of this result is to introduce the community to an alternative natural treatment that can support independent health, while also creating opportunities for economic empowerment through the cultivation of medicinal plants. Keywords: Family Medicinal Plants; Community empowerment; Natural health; Sustainable economy; TOGA

Abstract

Symbols on drug packaging are vital for providing essential information regarding the usage, dosage, and safety warnings of medications. A lack of understanding of these symbols may lead to improper use of drugs, posing potential health risks. This community service initiative aimed to increase public awareness of these symbols through socialization activities targeted at the visitors of Car Free Day (CFD) Jakarta, a popular public gathering space with diverse individuals. The objective of this initiative was to evaluate the level of public understanding before and after the socialization of the symbols on drug packaging. A total of 60 participants were engaged in identifying the symbols on drug packaging, followed by an educational session explaining the meanings of these symbols. Data was collected using questionnaires and analyzed to determine whether there was a notable improvement in participants' understanding. The results indicated a significant increase in public knowledge following the educational intervention. The findings suggest that socialization efforts on the understanding of packaging symbols can enhance public awareness, potentially leading to safer and more informed medication use. It is recommended that similar socialization activities be conducted in other areas with high foot traffic to expand the reach of this educational effort.

Abstract

Bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana) are a herbal plant that is known to be rich in bioactive compounds, especially flavonoids, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. This study aims to determine the total flavonoid content in bidara leaf extract and evaluate the potential of its secondary metabolites for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify secondary metabolite content, which included flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins and phenolics. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent, followed by filtering and evaporation of the solvent using a rotary vacuum evaporator at a temperature of 40°C to produce a thick extract. Determination of total flavonoid levels was carried out using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method with aluminum chloride reagent at a wavelength of 441 nm, using quercetin as a standard. The results showed that the total flavonoid content in bidara leaf extract reached 3202.43 mg QE/100 g dry extract. This high flavonoid content supports antioxidant activity through the mechanism of capturing free radicals, chelating transition metal ions, and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. In addition, the flavonoids in the extract have the potential to be anti-inflammatory by inhibiting pro-inflammatory enzymes and modulating cytokines, as well as antimicrobial through disrupting microbial membranes. The conclusion of this research is that bidara leaf extract has great potential to be developed as an active ingredient in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Abstract

The global cosmetic industry continues to grow rapidly, with revenues projected to exceed USD 800 billion by 2030. However, the use of synthetic ingredients, plastic packaging, and energy- and water-intensive production processes has led to environmental impacts. This study examines the environmental impacts of the cosmetic industry through four key aspects: cosmetic ingredients, packaging, manufacturing processes, and consumer behavior. A literature review of publications from 2000 to 2025 obtained from major scientific databases was used. The results show that ingredients such as parabens, triclosan, and 1,4-dioxane contribute to pollution and environmental toxicity, while plastic packaging remains the main source of MPF. Sustainable alternatives, such as sugarcane straw extract, olive oil, whey protein isolate, and PLA-, cellulose-, and chitosan-based packaging materials, show strong potential to reduce environmental impact. Meanwhile, the adoption of renewable energy, waterloo systems, and recycling technologies in factories improves efficiency and reduces carbon emissions. Changes in consumer behavior, particularly among Generation Z, who are highly concerned about sustainability, also encourage producers to act more socially and environmentally responsibly. This study emphasizes the importance of implementing sustainable cosmetic practices to maintain a balance between industrial growth and environmental preservation.
