Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and types of conceptual metaphors and image schemas found in the corpus of Malay Sanggau song lyrics using a cognitive semantic approach. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data sources in the form of a corpus of seven Malay Sanggau songs taken from YouTube channels: Pancur Aji, Posan Ini, Riyak Sekayam, Lanau Idau, Borita Kalengkang, Ngapai Kapuas, and Biar Gonting Inang Putus. Data were collected through audiovisual and digital document analysis, as well as interviews with native speakers of Malay Sanggau to verify meanings. The analysis process was carried out through the stages of transcription, translation, identification of metaphors based on Lakoff and Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor theory, and application of Croft and Cruse's Image Schema theory to find cognitive relationships between the source domain and the target domain. The results of the study show that in the Sanggau Malay song corpus, there are three orientational metaphors, three structural metaphors, and three ontological metaphors. Each type of metaphor describes how the Sanggau Malay community interprets their life experiences, emotions, and cultural values through figurative language. These findings reinforce the view that conceptual metaphors function as a mirror of the cognition and local cultural identity of the Sanggau Malay community.

Abstract

English has become the dominant global language, and the accurate use of collocations is a key component of language proficiency. In Cambodia, the role of collocation knowledge in English writing remains underexplored. This qualitative study employed a descriptive design to examine grammatical collocation use among 13 Cambodian students through their essay writing. The primary aim was to identify both the types of grammatical collocations produced and the errors made in their usage. The analysis revealed that the most commonly used collocation type was Preposition + Noun, followed by Noun + Preposition. Less frequent patterns included Noun + To-infinitive and Adjective + Preposition, while Adjective + That-clause and Verb + Adverb were rarely found. In terms of accuracy, Preposition + Noun yielded the highest number of errors (12), followed by Noun + Preposition (5). Other types showed minimal or no errors. These findings highlight the students’ struggles with common collocation forms, particularly those involving prepositions. The most frequent source of error was interlingual transfer (88.45%), indicating influence from the native language. Other contributing factors included the learning environment (84.60%), intralingual transfer (53.80%), and communication strategies (50%). The study underscores the need for explicit instruction in collocation use, particularly in high-error patterns like Preposition + Noun. Addressing error sources such as native language interference can enhance students’ collocational competence in academic writing.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and assess the effectiveness of inquiry-based teaching materials in enhancing both mathematical and language literacy among university-level mathematics students. Using the Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, the research involved second-semester students from the Mathematics program at Universitas Negeri Padang, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires, observations, interviews, and tests assessing mathematical understanding and language literacy and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics along with thematic analysis for qualitative data. The results revealed significant improvements in student engagement, with 80% of participants reporting enhanced understanding and critical thinking. Furthermore, pre and post-test scores showed a notable increase in both mathematical and language literacy, from an average score of 60 in the pre-test to 78 in the post-test, alongside marked improvements in critical thinking, evaluation, and analysis skills. The findings demonstrate that the inquiry-based approach effectively promotes active learning and enhances both mathematical and language literacy. The novelty of this research lies in integrating inquiry-based learning to simultaneously address both cognitive and literacy skills in mathematics education, offering a more holistic approach to student development. This research suggests that incorporating such methods into the curriculum can foster more interactive, student-centered learning experiences, encouraging educators to adopt these approaches for improving critical thinking and literacy, thus enriching students' academic and professional capabilities.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL students’ perceptions of self-created glossaries as a strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery for translation tasks in an Indonesian-English translation class at Universitas Negeri Padang. The research focus on four aspects of perception, namely attractiveness, perceived effectiveness, relevance, and perceived motivation, and also explores the strategies students used in developing their glossaries. The participants were 25 students enrolled in the 2024/2025 Indonesian-English Translation class who completed weekly glossary assignments. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 20 closed-ended and one open-ended item and analyzed using descriptive quantitative and thematic approaches. The results indicate that students generally held positive perceptions of the self-created glossaries (M = 2.94 on a 4-point scale). Students who applied more varied and systematic strategies, such as contextual vocabulary selection and organized structuring, reported higher levels of perceived usefulness and motivation. These findings suggest that self-created glossaries can effectively support vocabulary learning, and enhance students’ preparation for translation activities.

Abstract

Nagari Siguntur, located in Koto XI Tarusan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, has great potential for cultural tourism. However, information related to the tourism profile, transportation access, infrastructure, and event schedules in the area is still unavailable, even on the official village website, which has led to tourism stagnation. This Community Service Program aims to provide training and assistance in developing digital content about cultural wisdom for the Nagari Siguntur officials as part of the Empowerment Forum for the Village Information System (SINAR) and AI integration. Through this program, the Nagari Siguntur officials are expected to be equipped and ready to establish an AI-assisted Village Information System (SINAR) that provides sufficient public information, thereby accelerating the realization of an independent village in terms of cultural information, with positive impacts on tourism and the local economy. The methods used include training sessions introducing basic concepts of culture and cultural wisdom, cultural content writing, interview techniques, journalistic ethics, and the use of social media platforms for publication, as well as workshops on writing engaging and informative cultural content and managing social media platforms such as websites.

Abstract

The study investigates the accuracy of students’ translations of descriptive texts assisted by DeepL Translate and students’ perception toward the use of this translation tool in translation learning. The presence of machine translation tools in academic contexts has raised concerns regarding translation quality and students' overreliance on automated systems. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved 32 undergraduate students of English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data were collected through translation tasks consisting of three descriptive texts and a perception questionnaire. Students’ translation accuracy was measured using Nababan translation quality assessment model, while students' perceptions were examined across four aspects: attractiveness, relevance, perceived usefulness, and perceived motivation. The findings show that students achieved the highest translation accuracy in texts with explicit meanings and simple sentence structures (mean score 2.75), while accuracy declined in texts containing figurative language, abstract expressions, and longer sentence constructions (mean scores 2.48 and 2.44). The overall mean score of translation accuracy was 2.55, categorized as accurate. The questionnaire results reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions toward the use of DeepL Translate, with an overall mean score of 3.02, particularly regarding its relevance (3.20) and attractiveness (3.17). However, positive perceptions were not consistently aligned with high translation accuracy. These findings suggest that although DeepL Translate can support translation learning, students’ still need strong linguistic competence and post-editing skill to ensure accurate translation outcomes.
