Abstract

English for Computer Science (ECS), as part of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), is designed to teach students the English required in computer science. In this paper, the writers proposed to incorporate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into ECS to encourage student engagement by presenting current concerns relevant to their life experiences. The work is a position paper in which the writers argue for the importance of building a web-based interactive module for ESD in ECS. Our arguments are supported in the following sections; English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), English for Computer Science (ECS), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Instructional Material limited to Module and E-Module, and related research. The writers propose developing an interactive web-based module for ESD in ECS so that students have more fun while they are studying. It is anticipated that students will be able to study the module at their own pace and according to their capabilities. This module is paperless; it contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As instructional materials, the module will also assist ECS students in overcoming classroom time constraints and relating what they learn to future concerns, careers, and professionalism. Keywords: web-based interactive module; education for sustainable development; english for computer science

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits and challenges associated with using social media in English language learning, focusing on English education students. The research used a mixed-method design, incorporating questionnaires. The benefits of using social media in learning English are multifaceted and significant. English learning also enhances their digital literacy and technology skills. Social media platforms provide learners with access to authentic language use in real-time contexts, allowing them to observe and engage with native speakers, which enhances their understanding of colloquial expressions and cultural nuances. the interactive nature of social media fosters active participation and communication practice, which are crucial for developing speaking and writing skills. Social media also offers diverse content, from educational videos and articles to interactive exercises and language learning communities, catering to various learning preferences and needs. English education students have identified several challenges when using social media for learning English, alongside potential solutions to these issues. Some challenges are perceived more negatively (distractions, language barriers, and material credibility), others are seen in a more positive light (maintaining focus and self-discipline and balancing time). The perception varies across different aspects of learning English on social media, highlighting the complexity of the experience and the individual preferences and challenges of the respondents. It is essential to consider these perceptions when designing educational strategies and support systems for learners on social media platforms.

Abstract

A learning resource centre must have facilities that can be used by students in seeking information and knowledge. The present study aimed to investigate the students’ perception of the physical needs of resource centre to support English language learning. The study employed qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of the research were 104 English Department students. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The results showed that there was a neutral indication on students’ perception of the physical needs of the LRC. The language resource centre facilitated the students to find out some references for course assignments, to obtain addition information on certain subject, to enrich students’ knowledge through book review program, and to build independent learning through digitalization. However, the availability of up-to-date materials collection, EFL website access, and sustainable language program should be developed and qualified. Therefore, a constructive solution is needed to optimize the functions of learning resource centre to support English language learning.

Abstract

This research analyzed the translation of euphemism in the novel Fifty Shades of Grey (2011). This research aimed to find the types of euphemisms and the translation technique used by the translator in the novel Fifty Shades of Grey and wanted to know the impact of translation technique on euphemism results in TT. The euphemism types were analyzed using Allan and Burridge’s (2020) theory, classifying euphemisms into metaphor, hyperbole, idiom, litotes, circumlocution, acronym, shortening, indirection, and borrowing. Then, the translation technique was analyzed by using Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory as follows: borrowing, calque, literal translation, compensation, transposition, description, modulation, amplification, adaptation, established Equivalent, general translation, particularization, reduction, discursive creation, substitution, linguistic compression, linguistic amplification, and variation. The finding shows that the established Equivalent was the most dominant translation technique used by the translator to translate the euphemism types in the novel Fifty Shades of Grey into Indonesia. It also shows that the technique of translation affected the categories of euphemism translation results; if the types of euphemisms are translated with literal translation techniques, the meaning of euphemism becomes lost.
