Abstract

This study uses translation techniques to compare euphemism and dysphemism translation from English into Indonesia in news articles on the Deutsche Welle (DW) online platform. The research employs a qualitative approach to identify the euphemism and dysphemism present in the source texts and to analyze the translation techniques used and their effect on the translation quality to convey these linguistic elements in the target language. The translation techniques are evaluated based on Molina and Albir's framework, while the translation quality is adapted from Nababan's framework. The findings indicate that the established equivalent is the most frequently used translation technique. Other techniques, such as modulation, generalization, and reduction, were found to have a more varied impact on the consistency and accuracy of the translations. This study highlights the importance of employing appropriate translation techniques to ensure that the intended meanings and effects of euphemism and dysphemism are effectively conveyed in the target language, especially in the context of news reporting. The insights gained from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges and strategies involved in translating sensitive linguistic elements and can serve as a valuable resource for translators, linguists, and educators in the field of translation studies.

Abstract

Several aims have been established, including the examination of onomatopoeia types and the technique employed for translating onomatopoeia in the webtoon comic titled "Good/Bad Fortune" by Ariel Duyung.The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, and the data for this study is divided into two parts. The first set of data comprises onomatopoeic words found in the original version of the comic "Good/Bad Fortune," while the second set consists of the English translation version. In total, there are 62 instances of data. Moreover, six translation techniques are employed for translating onomatopoeia, with the following distribution: 27 (43.5%) cases of establishing equivalents, 27 (43.5%) cases of borrowing, 3 (4.8%) cases of adaptation, 1 (1.6%) case of modulation, 3 (4.8%) cases of discursive creation, and 1 (1.6%) case of substitution.

Abstract

This research analyzed the types of swear words and the translation techniques of swear words that found in a translated novel by Colleen Hoover entitled It Ends With Us into Bahasa Indonesia. This research used descriptive qualitative method to collect the data. The researcher used the theory by Anderson (1992) to analyze types of swear words and the theory by Molina & Albir (2000) to analyze translation techniques of swear words. The researcher found all types of swear words such as expletive swearing, abusive swearing, humorous swearing and auxiliary swearing, the most type that found is expletive swea. Then the researcher also found nine types of translation techniques of swear words such as adaptation, compensation, amplification, established equivalent, literal translation, linguisric amplification, linguistic compression, transposition and modulation, the most techniqu that found is established equivalent.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to find the process type found in the short story titled The Last Leaf by O. Henry. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive, while the data were taken from the short story. In Systematic Functional Linguistics, it is the approach used to analyze the text and context. Where SFL itself is the study of function language divided the function into three are Textual Function, Interpersonal Function, and Ideational Function. Ideational Function is express the idea and experience, that experience is language illustrated how people is view of the world as consisting of “ going-on or what happen” (verb) included things (as noun) and attributive (as adjective) and other such as place, manner and time (as adverb) or we call as transitivity aspect. The result of study, the dominant process used in the source text and target text that are 120 process for Material Process, 35 process for Mental process, 49 process for Relational process for source text, and 111 process for Material Process, 44 process for Mental process, 30 process for Relational process in target text. Therefore, Material, Mental, Relational is the dominant used type process in the some text especially in narrative text, as (Gerot and Wignell 1995) said some typical Processes are found in the text type such as Mental, Material and Relational Processes.

Abstract

Universitas dapat mengevaluasi apakah laboratorium bahasa digunakan secara optimal oleh dosen dan mahasiswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan pemanfaatan laboratorium bahasa sebagai fasilitas pembelajaran bahasa di Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. Penelitian deskriptif ini dilaksanakan dari bulan Maret sampai Juni dua ribu dua puluh empat dengan menggunakan lembar observasi dan wawancara kepada pihak yang terkait di laboratorium bahasa Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. Data yang terkumpul dianalasis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan trianggulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fasilitas yang ada di laboratorium bahasa Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai sudah tersedia perangkat keras dan lunak yang lengkap. Yang terdiri dari empat puluh komputer mahasiswa dan satu komputer dosen. Selain itu dilengkapi dengan headphone, microphone, TV LED. Beberapa perangkat lunak terdiri dari aplikasi pembelajaran TOEFL dan CAT yang dilengkapi dengan akses internet yang kuat. Laboratorium bahasa ini dimanfaatkan untuk proses pembelajaran bahasa. Selain itu juga digunakan dalam penyelenggaraan webinar dan perlu ditingkatkan. Pemanfaatan laboratorium bahasa sangat bermanfaat bagi civitas akademika. Secara keseluruhan, laboratorium bahasa di Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai telah berfungsi dengan baik dan memberikan kontribusi positif bagi pembelajaran bahasa di lingkungan universitas.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the translation techniques of anger-expressive utterances found in the Novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, translated into Indonesia. The purpose of the research was to study anger expressions and classify the translation techniques of anger used by the translator in The Hate U Give Novel and its translation. The data were gathered from reading the novel. There are 182 utterances that fall into the category of "expressions of anger" found in the novel.  From the result of data analysis, there were eleven types of translation techniques used by the translator in translated anger utterances found in the Novel, there were borrowing with 9 data, compensation with 9 data, transposition with 8 data, modulation with 12 data, amplification with 21 data, adaptation with 39 data, established equivalent with 61 data, generalization with 1 data, reduction with 11 data, variation with 2 data, and one technique that not include in Molina and Albir theory’s called neutralization with 9 data. Establish Equivalent was the most dominant translation technique.

Abstract

The language laboratory plays a pivotal role in enhancing English language proficiency at Pesantren Musthofawiyah Purba Baru. Through a mixed-methods research approach, including quantitative analysis and qualitative insights, this study investigates the utilization patterns, effectiveness, challenges, and recommendations associated with the language laboratory. Findings reveal significant improvements in vocabulary acquisition, grammatical accuracy, oral fluency, and listening comprehension. Student testimonials highlight increased confidence and proficiency, while teacher perspectives emphasize innovative pedagogical strategies and technological resources. Challenges include resource constraints, curriculum integration, and cultural factors. Recommendations focus on infrastructure investment, curriculum alignment, and teacher training. Overall, language laboratories are instrumental in fostering linguistic empowerment and academic excellence, contributing to global citizenship and educational innovation.

Abstract

Most previous researchers found out that students have difficulties in transalting some expressions from a source language to a target language. This research has a purpose to reveal correlation between the students’ habit in watching English movies and their ability in translating English idiom expressions. The population and sample of this research was the third year who are taking translation subject in their fifth semester of academic year 2021 in English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and translation test. The result of this research showed that the r-calculated (0.549) > r-table (0.333). The hypothesis was accepted by the calculation of t-test which is t-calculated (3.773) > t-table (1.692) with df = n-2 (33) in the level of significance 0.05. The research hypothesis stated that there is a significant correlation between students’ watching habits and their ability in translating English idioms was accepted.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the types of errors made by the English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating tourism brochure from Bahasa Indonesia into English. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the translation of tourism brochures of the  entitled “Lembah Harau, Indahnya Minangkabau” and “Destinasi Wisata Alam yang Masih Alami di Sumatera Barat” done by English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who have taken Indonesia English Translation Subject. The data were collected using a test and were analyzed using the error analysis. The results of the study indicate that there are four types of errors  which  error  of devition of  meaning  is  the most error frequently   committed   by   the   students   in   their translation   with   the   frequency   of   180 times   (63,15%). Omission of meaning (26.66%) is the second, while the error of addition and the error of invention  of  meaning  are  the  least  error  found  in  the students’ translation.

Abstract

Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, blended learning techniques have become very important in the learning process. Therefore, this research aims to find out students' learning strategies, teachers' and students' use of learning media, and whether students' learning strategies align with teachers' and students' choices of learning media for speaking skills in blended learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a qualitative research study conducted through questionnaires and interviews. The researcher employed a purposive sampling technique to select 26 students from class XI Natural Science, class XI Social Science, and 3 English teachers from a public school in Jambi Province. The findings reveal that, firstly, students in XI Natural Science and XI Social Science predominantly used metacognitive strategies. However, the lowest strategy employed by XI Natural Science students was the cognitive strategy, while for XI Social Science students, it was the social strategy. Secondly, the most frequently used learning media by the teachers was E-book. Thirdly, this research demonstrates that the learning strategies employed by students are consistent with the learning media chosen by both teachers and students. Furthermore, the implications of this study are that teachers can gain insights on how to teach students to enhance their speaking abilities, and English teachers can benefit from adapting the learning media to the preferences of their students.
