Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menganalisa sejauh mana novel ini merefleksikan aberrasi (2) menunjukkan kontribusi elemen fiksi (karakter dan seting) dalam mengungkap aberasi dalam novel ini. Data penelitian ini adalah teks tertulis yang dikutip dari novel dan yang konteks yang terjadi pada novel ini. Kutipan teks tersebut kemudian diinterpretasi dan dianalisa berdasarkan teori simulacra yang dikemukakan oleh Jean Baudrilard, teori Self Deception oleh Brian McLaughlin dan representasi oleh Ladesma. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa tindakan dari jurnalis dan masyarakat telah menyimpang dari kebenaran yang semata-mata hanya untuk mendapatkan keuntungan secara materi.   Kata kunci: aberration, truth, code ethic, journalism

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah membandingkan pelanggaranmaksim-maksim prinsip kerja sama dalam dua jenis genre filmyaitu film aksi “Charlie’s Angels” dan film bergenre drama “ThePacifer”. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mendiskripsikan maksimapa saja yang dilanggar dalam dua film tersebut. Sumber datadikumpulkan dari skrip kedua film dan fokus analisis pelanggaranmaksim ditujukan pada karakter utama film tersebut. Dari hasilanalisa, karakter-karakter utama dari dua film tersebut melanggarseluruh maksim, yaitu maksim kuantitas (quantity), kualitas(quality), hubungan (relevansi) dan maksim tindakan (manner).Pada film aksi “Charlie’s Angels”, terjadi 53 macam pelanggaranmaksim yang terjadi pada tiga karakter utama. Maksim yang palingbanyak dilanggar adalah maksim kualitas, dengan persentase35.85% , diikuti pelanggaran maksim kuantitas 18.87%. setelah itu,pelanggaran maksim relevansi dan tindakan sebanyak 22.64%.Sedangkan pada film drama “The Pacifier”, terjadi 48 pelanggaranmaksim. Maksim yang paling banyak dilanggar adalah maksimkuantitas, sebanyak 37.5%. Pelanggaran maksim relevansisebanyak 25 %. Pelanggaran maksim kualitas dan maksim tindakanmemiliki persentase yang sama, yaitu 18,75%.Kata Kunci: cooperative principle, maxim violation, action movie,drama movie

Abstract

Makalah ini bertujuan untuk (1) Mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe pertanyaan, (2) Pola-pola pertanyaan yang digunakan oleh guru-guru Tiji Homeschooling terhadap siswa penyandang Asperger. Kemudian, (3) juga mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis tanggapan dari siswa penyandang Asperger terhadap pertanyaan-pertanyaan dari guru-guru tersebut. Makalah ini mengambil 5 kali rekaman dialog antara anak penyandang Asperger dengan guru-guru ketika proses belajar mengajar sebagai data, yaitu ujaran- ujaran yang termasuk ke dalam rogative. Dari hasil penelitian, terlihat adanya 430 pertanyaan dimana jenis direct rogative dengan jumlah 373 (86,7%) yang paling banyak digunakan dan jenis indirect rogative tidak langsung 57 (13,3%). dari pengelompokkan jenis pertanyaan, ditemukan sebanyak 372 (86,5%) information-seeking question, 47 (10,9%) information-checking question, dan 11 (2,6%) clarification question, guru banyak menggunakan information-seeking question. Kemudian, juga ditemukan jenis-jenis tanggapan sebanyak 112 tanggapan yaitu absurd response (AR) 18 tanggapan, odd response (OR) 62 tanggapan, more relevant but not very polite (RnP) 6 tanggapan, dan marginal response (MR) 26 tanggapan dimana odd response paling banyak muncul sebagai tanggapan terhadap pertanyaan guru-guru. Data ini menyimpulkan bahwa jenis tanggapan odd response prioritas muncul dalam tanggapan-tanggapan oleh siswa, yang berumur enam tahun, dengan gangguan Asperger tersebut yang menunjuukkan mengalami masalah dalam memahami pertanyaan-pertanyaan (language comprehension disorder) dari guru-guru Tiji Homeschooling.

Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini membahas presuposisi (praanggapan) dalam film “HarryPotter and the Deathly Hallows part 2”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untukmengungkap jenis dan makna presupposisi dalam ujaran oleh penutur (HarryPotter) dalam film tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori yang diajukan olehYule (1996) mengenai tipe pra anggapan dan Searle dalam Levinson (1983)mengenai fungsi bahasa untuk menganalisa data. Data diambil dari ujaran HarryPotter. Data dikumpulkan secara deskriptif dengan memperhatikan kontekssehingga makna presuposisi pragmatik dapat diungkap.Dari 54 data, penulis menemukan 5 tipe pra-anggapan yang dikemukakanoleh Yule, yaitu pra-anggapan eksistential 18 ujaran (existential presupposition),faktif 21 ujaran (factive presupposition), struktural 10 ujaran (structuralpresupposition), leksikal 4 ujaran (lexical presupposition) dan konterfaktual 1ujaran(counterfactual presupposition). Tipe pra-anggapan yang dominandigunakan adalah pra-anggapan faktif (factive presupposition). Penulis jugamenemukan 4 fungsi bahasa yang disampaikan oleh Searle, yaitu fungsirepresentatif 32 ujaran (representative function), direktif 11 ujaran (directivefunction), kommisif 8 ujaran (commisive function) dan ekpresif 3 ujaran(expressive function).Kata kunci: Presupposition. Abstract

Translation and foreign language mostly influence the use of local language di Indonesia. However, in the translation text entitled "Asal-Usul Elite Minangkabau Modern: Respons terhadap Kolonial Belanda Abad XIX/XX," there is an attempt to maintain a local language, Minangkabau. The original text was written in English by E. Grave an American researcher. This paper aims to identify translation techniques as the form of language maintenance and its impact on the readability of the translation text. The findings show that adaptation, established equivalence, particularization, explicitation, and addition techniques are used in maintaining Minangkabaunese. The assessment of the translation indicates that these techniques did not decrease the level of readability. The readability level is at an easy level with a score of 3.53. This finding implies that language maintenance does not reduce the readability of translation and it is a positive effort that translators can make.

Abstract

Some researchers reported that the EFL learners’ ability in understanding and using tense, aspects, and voice of English at the English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang was not academically satisfied yet. Most EFL learners of English Education department were not in “expected” ability in understanding and using appropriate grammatical constructions both in writing and speaking. This condition may give negative ef-fects to the success of EFL learning in Indonesia. It seems that learners’ and teachers’ grammatical con-sciousness on EFL should be academically and practically raised in such a way that they may have basic and better competency standards. One of stylistic clause constructions in English which is called medio-passive has not yet a well-known construction for many teachers and learners of English in Indonesia. This paper briefly discusses how authentic materials may psychologically and academically raise the grammatical con-sciousness on the medio-passive constructions as part competency standards in EFL. Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the learner's profile of SMA Negeri 7 Padang in studying English. It is aimed at: (1) identifying learning style of the students, and (2) identifying their preference related to their learning style. The research result of the study shows that most of the students were authority-oriented learners. In this case they depend on the English teachers. Furthermore, it was found that most of the students like the teachers to use Indonesian rather than English in the classroom including in giving explanation of difficult words. Then, they like the teacher to give correction. Finally, they like studying in group, and they have high internal motivation.Key words: learning style, students, motivation

Abstract

Listening is one of the skills that should be mastered by any language learners. It usually defines as the ability to identify and understand what others are saying or talking about. However, it is not an easy task. It requires understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning. Therefore, in teaching listening, teachers need to pay attention on how to help the learner to master this skill. In fact, the way of teaching listening seems to be boring and stressful. The students just sit and listen to the text and fill the blanks or listen to the question. It is merely like a test. This paper aims at sharing the way of teaching listening by using group work or collaborative activities. Listening activities should be challenging and interactive. It must be taught integrated. These activities are aimed at encouraging and facilitating students to take advantage of collaborative activity in order to practice listening skills and communicate and negotiate with others.

Abstract

Machine translation has become the trending topic in translation studies. The ease and practicality offered by machine translation make it become the prominent choice in translating source texts. Nowadays, machine translation has also spread its influences in English education. It is utilized as a tool to teach foreign language to language learners, especially in translation course. Google Translate which has shown the best accuracy among any other machine translations is proved to be the most used MT. However, the quality of its output is not guaranteed thoroughly since translation errors occasionally appear in Google translation. Apart from a numerous lexical resources, the understanding of both source and target language is significantly needed to produce a good translation. This paper presents the results of a research study focusing on the types of Google translation errors found in the English translation of Indonesian folklores. The analysis of Google translation errors not merely shows what types of errors produced by Google Translate but also illustrates the implications of these errors to the message delivered in the translation, which can be used as didactic media to increase the critical thinking of language learners related to language use. The study found that there are 4 types of errors in the English translation of Indonesian folklores produced by Google Translate such as ‘incorrect words’, ‘missing words’, ‘word order’, and ‘unknown words’ errors. These results are hoped to sharpen up linguistic awareness of language learners, particularly related to the choice of words and the grammatical structure. Key words: Machine Translation, Translation Errors, Google Translate, Folklore

Abstract

This article presents the importance theory of translation in translation training to build translation competence in revitalizing the teaching of translation. Firstly, the translation competence is defined. Then, six sub-competences of translation competence are described and materials given in the translation subject to build students’ competence are presented. This competence builds students’ awareness in detecting translation problem and finding the strategy to solve it. Some strategy applied by the translator in his translation (translation technique) are presented. These techniques are implemented to solve untranslatability. By introducing these techniques, the students improve their translation competence, especially in translating untranslatable words or expression. Students’ responses on the materials related the translation theory are also presented. This will be useful input for future improvement for the translation subject.Key words: translation theory, translation competence, problem-based solving
