Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in the character formation and academic achievement of high school students. In the context of an increasingly complex and plural world, religious education serves not only as a means to introduce certain religious teachings, but also as a tool to shape the character of students through important moral values such as discipline, tolerance, and responsibility. This study aims to review the influence of religious education on the character development and academic achievement of high school students, focusing on various models and approaches that can improve both. The method used is a systematic literature review (SLR), referring to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, to analyze various relevant empirical studies from various scientific sources. The results of the study show that religious education that integrates the values of moderation and multiculturalism has a positive impact on the formation of students' character, as well as improving their academic achievement. The use of digital technology, such as Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR), has also been proven to enrich religious learning experiences, increase emotional engagement, and deepen students' understanding of religious teachings. However, there are challenges in optimizing the involvement of parents and communities in a more holistic religious education process. Therefore, further research is needed to develop a more effective religious education model in supporting the development of students' character and academic achievement. This research emphasizes the importance of integration between religious education, moral values, and technology to create a better learning environment and support students' academic success.

Abstract

This study examines how Qur’anic moral values are integrated into a school-based character development program through the Bina Pribadi Islami (BPI) framework at SMPIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta, an Islamic integrated school in Indonesia. The study addresses the gap between normative formulations of moral education and their practical implementation in school settings. A qualitative case study design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The primary informants consisted of a BPI mentor and an Islamic Education teacher, while additional data were obtained from observations of student activities and institutional documents to support triangulation. The analysis focused on selected Qur’anic teachings, particularly those reflected in Surah Al-Kautsar and Surah Al-Ma’un, as a basis for understanding the integration of moral values. The findings indicate that the integration of moral values is carried out through interconnected practices, including structured habituation, mentoring-based interaction, and the operationalization of values in both worship and social activities. These practices are supported by institutional mechanisms such as the 10 muwashofat framework, continuous monitoring through mutaba’ah amal yaumiyah, and the involvement of teachers across subject areas. The integration process reflects a systematic sequence of value identification, behavioral translation, habituation, evaluation, and follow-up guidance, allowing Qur’anic values to be embedded in students’ daily experiences. The findings indicate that the BPI program represents a structured and contextually grounded approach to integrating Qur’anic moral values within school-based character education, in which religious values are translated into sustained practices supported by institutional systems and daily interaction.

Abstract

This study examines the dimension of socio-political criticism in Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka with a focus on the value of justice as the central theme. The Tafsir of Al-Azhar is not only a monumental work in the Islamic scientific treasures in the archipelago, but also a reflection of the thinking of a scholar who is responsive to the socio-political dynamics of his time. Hamka, as a mufasir as well as a social activist, integrates the textual understanding of the Qur'an with the historical context and empirical reality of society, resulting in contextual and applicative interpretations. This study uses a qualitative method with a hermeneutical-critical approach to analyze how Hamka constructs the concept of socio-political justice through his interpretation of the verses of the Qur'an. The findings of the study show that Hamka's socio-political criticism in Tafsir Al-Azhar includes three main dimensions: first, criticism of the arbitrariness of rulers and abuse of power; second, advocacy for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized groups; and third, emphasis on the principles of deliberation and political participation as a mechanism for the realization of justice. Hamka emphasized that justice is a fundamental value in Islam that must be implemented concretely in the political system and social structure. The concept of justice in Tafsir Al-Azhar is not limited to the individual-spiritual dimension, but extends to the collective-structural level that includes economic distribution, legal equality, and political participation. This research makes a theoretical contribution to the study of Indonesian contextual interpretation and a practical contribution to the development of Islamic political ethics based on the Qur'an.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the study of the Ta’limul Muta’allim book in shaping the morals of students at MAN 1 Surakarta. Islamic education does not only focus on the mastery of knowledge but also emphasizes the development of character and moral values among students. The book Ta’limul Muta’allim, written by Imam Az-Zarnuji, is one of the classical Islamic texts widely studied in pesantren as a guide to the ethics of seeking knowledge. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive analytical approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving dormitory leaders, teachers of the Ta’limul Muta’allim book, supervisors, and students living in the dormitory of MAN 1 Surakarta. The results of the study show that the study of the Ta’limul Muta’allim book plays a strategic role in shaping students’ moral character by instilling ethical values in the pursuit of knowledge, such as sincere intention, humility (tawadhu’), moral caution (wira’i), and respect for teachers, knowledge, and fellow students. The learning process is implemented through the bandungan method, which allows students to understand the classical text while internalizing the moral values contained in it. The implementation of these values is strengthened through teachers’ exemplary behavior, daily habituation in dormitory life, and a behavioral evaluation system for students. Although several challenges exist, such as limited Arabic language comprehension among new students and the psychological dynamics of adolescence, the study of the Ta’limul Muta’allim book is generally considered effective in supporting the moral development of students in a pesantren-based madrasah environment.
