Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the number of compaction impacts on the void characteristics of Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixtures with cement as an additive filler. The research employed an experimental approach, testing mixtures with two filler types: stone dust alone and a combination of stone dust with 1% cement. Compaction levels varied at 2×65, 2×75, and 2×85 blows, and Marshall tests were conducted to evaluate stability, flow, Voids in Mix (VIM), Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA), and Voids Filled with Bitumen (VFB). Results demonstrated that increasing compaction effort and adding 1% cement reduced VIM and VMA while enhancing stability and VFB. The lowest VIM (2.53%) and highest stability (1078.45 kg) were achieved with 6.5% asphalt, 1% cement, and 2×85 blows, indicating improved mixture density and load resistance. The findings align with Bina Marga 2018 specifications, highlighting the benefits of cement as a filler and optimal compaction for AC-WC performance.

Abstract

There are various reasons and considerations underlying travellers in choosing a mode of transportation. The diversity of transportation mode is an essential factor for transportation business actors in competing to provide a choice of transportation modes that are very popular or no longer in demand for use by travellers traveling from one city to another. Currently, the most frequently used mode of transportation on the Pontianak - Ketapang city route or vice versa is airplane transportation or travel, and this is because both modes of vehicle arrive in the city of Ketapang without transiting in other towns or regions. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the choice of transportation mode and obtain the probability of airplane and travel passengers. This research is conducted with a stated preference method by distributing questionnaires to people traveling from the Pontianak - Ketapang city route using airplanes and travel modes. For the survey, data is collected using a questionnaire distributed to 420 respondents through Google form using four attributes, namely cost, time, headway, and service. Based on the analysis results for calculating transportation mode choice with the stated preference method, a utility model is obtained as follows: U(PT-TR) = 0.291 + -2.883E-6.∆x1 + -0.226.∆x2 + 0.218.∆x3 + 0.023.∆x4 with an airplane probability of 55.92%, while   the travel probability is 44.08%. The most sensitive attribute affecting the choice of transportation mode is the time attribute. It is because changes in travel time will result in a relatively greater probability of mode choice when compared to changes in cost, headway, and service attributes.

Abstract

Styrofoam, a polystyrene-based plastic widely used in packaging, poses serious environmental challenges due to its non-biodegradable nature. Its use as an additive in asphalt mixtures provides dual benefits: reducing plastic waste and improving pavement performance. This study evaluates the effects of styrofoam addition and variations in compaction temperature on the Marshall characteristics of Asphalt Concrete"“Binder Course (AC"“BC). The research included testing the physical properties of aggregates and asphalt, determining the optimum asphalt content (OAC) using the Barchart method in accordance with Bina Marga Specifications 2018, Revision II, and preparing mixtures with styrofoam contents of 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%. Samples were compacted at 110 °C, 125 °C, and 140 °C, then tested using the Marshall method to analyze stability, flow, and void-related parameters. Results showed an OAC of 5,6%. Higher styrofoam content and compaction temperature generally improved mixture stability. The highest stability value, 1.152,2 kg, was achieved at a 9% styrofoam content and a compaction temperature of 140 °C. These findings indicate that styrofoam enhances structural strength by filling voids without significantly reducing flexibility. Therefore, styrofoam has strong potential as an eco-friendly additive to improve asphalt performance while helping reduce plastic waste.
