Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of multicultural education based on local values in the multiethnic community of Kayu Aro. Kayu Aro is home to various ethnic groups, including Kerinci, Javanese, Minangkabau, and Batak, who have long coexisted in shared social, cultural, and economic spaces. Although this diversity has given rise to harmonious social practices such as interethnic cooperation, tolerance toward cultural traditions, and the use of Javanese as a lingua franca, these values have not yet been systematically integrated into the formal educational process. As a result, lessons on diversity in schools often remain abstract and detached from the students’ lived experiences. This research adopts a mixed methods approach, with concurrent triangulation design. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and field observations, while quantitative data were obtained through student surveys measuring their understanding of multicultural values. The findings show that local values possess strong potential to serve as a foundation for multicultural education, particularly in fostering students’ awareness of the importance of coexistence in a plural society. However, the absence of structured efforts to incorporate these local narratives into school curricula and teaching strategies remains a significant barrier. This study recommends the integration of local values into school practices as a contextualized and culturally responsive approach to multicultural education one that is equitable, experience-based, and rooted in the social realities of students. Keywords: Multicultural Education, Local Values, Multiethnic Society, Contextual Learning

Abstract

Indonesia, as a multicultural country with a wide diversity of cultures, religions, and ethnicities, emphasizes the importance of promoting inclusivity and preserving local identity through education. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of multicultural themes and representations of West Javanese cultural contexts in 1,000 books donated by the National Library to 10,000 community reading parks in 2024. This study is a qualitative descriptive study using the content analysis method. The population in this study was books obtained from Librarians at the National Library, while the sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, which came from 1000 books with a multicultural context and representation of the West Java cultural context. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques were carried out using content analysis. The results showed that 35.19% of the books evaluated discussed multicultural themes. This theme was more common at the intermediate and advanced reader levels (B3 and C) than at the beginner level (A). Books specifically themed around West Java only represented 4.81% of the collection, highlighting the limitations of local cultural narratives. This study concludes that there is great potential to strengthen regional identity, foster pride in cultural heritage, and provide insight into traditional values through the provision of books on cultural heritage.

Abstract

The conflict that occurred in Cirebon Regency is an example of the division between ethnic groups that have been taking place in Indonesia for more than a decade. The emotional toll of living in a conflict-ridden environment has led elementary school children to imitate conflict behavior in their school settings and in dealing with peers. To prevent the internalization and reproduction of conflict behavior, the role of educators is crucial thus the need for effective conflict resolution models- one of which is through the development of a critical reasoning-based conflict resolution learning model. This article aims to examine two main questions: (1) What educational theories underlie the development of a critical reasoning-based model? and (2) What is the preliminary design of a conflict resolution model in elementary school learning? This research adopts the Sukmadinata development model which simplifies the stages of Borg & Gall's educational R&D approach. The findings of this study reveal that: (1) three main educational theories form the foundation for developing conflict resolution models in Civics education—namely humanistic theory, progressivism, and reconstructionism; and (2) the initial design of the conflict resolution model encompasses five key elements: instructional syntax, social system, classroom management, support systems, and both instructional and nurturant effects. The contribution of this study lies in providing a theoretically grounded and practically applicable model of conflict resolution learning for elementary schools, which is oriented toward the cultivation of critical reasoning. This model not only serves as a pedagogical tool for teachers in areas vulnerable to social conflict, but also enriches Civics learning by integrating peace education and democratic values from an early age.
