Abstract

The interest in reading among elementary school students remains poor, especially in understanding narrative story texts. Therefore, interesting and contextual learning media is important to improve students' reading skills. This study aims to test the efficacy of the use of digital comics based on local culture on the story reading skills of 5th-grade elementary school students. The study applied an experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group model. The study subjects involved 68 students in 5th grade who were segmented into two groups: an experimental group using digital comic media based on local culture, and a control group using conventional textbooks. The instrument included a story reading skill test. Data were analysed using a t-test. The results showed that the t-count value of 6.970 was higher than the t-table of 2.035, indicating a significant discrepancy between the experimental and control groups. Students using digital comics indicated higher improvement in reading skills and responded positively to the content, display, and cultural content in the media. This study concludes that digital comics using local culture are effectively used in learning to read stories in elementary schools. The implication of this research is the need for teachers to develop and utilise local culture-based media as an innovative alternative in Indonesian language learning. In addition to improving reading skills, this media also strengthens cultural identity and student involvement in the learning process.

Abstract

Conflicts that occur in the school environment are not necessarily an indication of the death of an organization. In fact, conflict can be a catalyst for improvement if principals and school communities collaborate to find solutions. In overcoming conflicts, school principals must have the competencies needed for a leader as specified in the Regulation of the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2007. This research aims to identify the core competencies that school principals must have in order to effectively manage and resolve conflicts in schools. This research is a descriptive research of literature. The four general stages in literature research are (1) collecting notes that are in accordance with the topic, (2) integrating relevant theories as a process of integrating concepts found in the literature being studied, (3) analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each source used, and (4) conducting an analysis and analysis of the scientific arguments from the results. The study reveals that several key elements contribute to the principal's ability to handle conflict effectively, including: (1) strong communication skills that include interpersonal, group, and organizational communication; (2) managerial ability in determining the priority of steps and processes; and (3) democratic leadership.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to analyze the relationship between reading literacy and numeracy on elementary school students' ability to solve word problems.Methodology – This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and data analysis techniques in the form of multiple linear regression. The research population consists of elementary school students, with a sample of 102 students randomly selected from several classes. The research instruments include three types of tests: reading literacy, numeracy, and word problem-solving. The normality test is conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to ensure normal data distribution, followed by the Pearson correlation test to determine the strength of the relationship between variables, and the regression analysis to determine the simultaneous correlation of the two independent variables with the dependent variable.Findings – The research results show a significant relationship between reading literacy and the ability to solve word problems (r = 0.896) and between numeracy and the ability to solve word problems (r = 0.902). Regression analysis shows that both independent variables explain 87.4% of the variation in students' ability to solve word problems. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening reading and numeracy literacy in an integrated manner in contextual mathematics learning. This indicates that students' success in solving word problems relies not only on arithmetic skills but also on their understanding of the content of the reading.Contribution – This study recommends developing an integrated learning model combining language literacy and numeracy aspects to comprehensively enhance students' problem-solving skills at the elementary school level. This research contributes to developing integrated learning strategies that incorporate reading literacy and numeracy skills to improve students' problem-solving competencies in elementary schools.
