Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the SCROL (Survey, Connect, Read, Outline, Look Back) strategy on the reading comprehension achievement of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjung Batu, Ogan Ilir, Indonesia. Many junior high school EFL students in Indonesian contexts continue to struggle with identifying main ideas, interpreting supporting details, and engaging independently with written texts challenges inadequately addressed by the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach currently mandated under the Merdeka curriculum. This study aimed to determine whether SCROL instruction significantly improved students' reading comprehension and whether a significant between-group difference existed compared to conventional instruction. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed with 60 seventh-grade students (experimental: n=30; control: n=30). Data were collected through validated and reliable multiple-choice reading comprehension pre-tests and post-tests. Paired samples t-tests confirmed significant within-group improvement in the experimental group (t = −28.016, p = 0.000), and independent samples t-tests confirmed a significant between-group difference in post-test scores (t = 11.600, p = 0.000). These findings demonstrate that the SCROL strategy is an effective, structured instructional approach for junior high school EFL learners. English teachers are encouraged to integrate SCROL explicitly into reading instruction, particularly in contexts where students lack strategic comprehension frameworks.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intensity of TikTok application use and analyze its influence on the morals of ninth-grade students toward teachers at SMPN 1 Talang Kelapa. The background of this research stems from the increasing use of TikTok among teenagers, which has the potential to affect behavior and moral values in interactions with teachers. The study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational method. The sample consists of 60 students selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed using Pearson correlation and simple linear regression with the help of SPSS version 26. The results show that the intensity of TikTok use is categorized as high (mean = 78.45), while students’ morals toward teachers are categorized as fairly good (mean = 68.12). The correlation test resulted in r = -0.612 (p = 0.000), indicating a significant negative relationship between the two variables. The regression results show R² = 0.375, meaning that TikTok usage influences 37.5% of students’ morals. Thus, the higher the intensity of TikTok use, the lower the students’ morals toward teachers. Cooperation among teachers, parents, and the school is needed in character development and digital literacy so that social media can be used positively.

Abstract

Writing remains one of the most challenging skills for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, particularly in organizing ideas coherently and expressing them clearly. In Indonesian senior high schools, students often struggle with paragraph development due to limited strategic guidance and reliance on standard teaching techniques. To address this issue, this study investigated the effectiveness of the PLEASE (Pick–List–Evaluate–Activate–Supply–End) Strategy in improving the writing achievement of eleventh-grade students of MAN 2 Palembang. A quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach was applied, involving two groups: one experimental group receiving PLEASE strategy instruction and one control group with teacher’s strategy. The writing test was administered before and after the treatment and evaluated through descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including independent and paired-sample t-tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group and a notable difference between the experimental and control groups. These findings indicate that the structured and metacognitive nature of the PLEASE strategy effectively enhances students’ ability to plan, organize, compose, and refine paragraphs. Future research may explore its application across different writing genres or integrate it with digital media to optimize writing instruction in diverse EFL contexts.

Abstract

Reading strategies are widely used to assist students in enhancing their reading comprehension. Additionally, reading interest is a critical factor in motivating students to use reading strategies effectively. However, many students still struggle to apply reading strategies, and research analyzing the impact of reading interest on the implementation of POSSE strategies is lacking. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the utilization of POSSE strategies to improve students’ reading comprehension, the impact of their reading interest levels on the reading comprehension scores, and the impact of students’ reading interest levels on the implementation of POSSE strategies to enhance reading comprehension. This quantitative experimental method employed a factorial design. The population consisted of eighth-grade students at SMPN 02 Belitang Mulya, and samples were selected using purposive sampling. Data were obtained from a reading comprehension test and a reading interest questionnaire, both tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The findings reveal that: (1) the POSSE strategy significantly improved students’ reading comprehension; (2) students with high reading interest outperformed those with low interest; and (3) there was a significant difference between teaching strategy and reading interest. The findings showed that effective reading instruction involves integrating the POSSE strategy and cultivating reading interest, alongside differentiated support tailored to students' motivational levels, to enhance comprehension outcomes.
